Well asked!

I think it is "sharing".  Of impressions, recollections, appreciations, and 
aspirations.  It's zen, of course, but there's no good definition of that.  On 
the other hand, it's more like "a finger pointing".  Well, the BEST of it is.  

;-)

And pointing is all we can do, if we engage in expression.  A painting is 
pointing.  So is dharma-combat, or a Koan.  So is a Haiku.  

And now, all seriousness aside... ,

My favorite non-Haiku is:

"A horse walks into a bar.  Bartender says, "Why the long FACE?"
