Morning Bill,
As you know, I did not read zen literature and not familiar with zen
terms. I had only one teacher who happens to be the patriarch of Chan.
He taught me the following:
1. when we sit on the cushion, try to practice "just this" ala Bill!
2. when we focus hard and long we will experience metta ala Mike.
3. When we get up from cushion, we maintain no mind ala KG.
4. when we live as a person, we learn to accept reality ala Edgar.
5. when we enjoy life, we gain wisdom ala Merle.
Forget about Jhana. It is just a state of being. Forget about Buddha
Nature. It is just a set of characteristics.
When you become nobody like me, then you might be able to appreciate the
wisdom of everyone. I have come to witness that everyone collectively
is Buddha. The universe is Buddha. All is Buddha is Chan.
When we realize that we really know little, have nothing of value, no
different from waves in the ocean, then we could just BE -- ala Edgar.
Nobody...

JMJM,
How do you think what you call the state of 'Janan' compares with what
zen literature calls 'Buddha Nature' (or Original Face, etc..)?
