Let me throw in an actual experience, which I am able to repeat when I want to. I don't understand exactly how the experience fits in, however.
When I have watched flags moving in the wind, that is actually watching an image inside my head of flags moving in the wind. But in addition, I have had an experience of something close to the inner eye, but visually invisible, flapping along with the image of the flapping. In context, I often see the images inside my head, if I'm not too attached to thinking the image is outside my head. Then, more towards the back of my head, there is a single point from which I feel like I am watching the image, an inner eye, or inner self. An illusory self I would guess. Between this point and the image, there is a certain amount of space inside my head. It is almost at the illusory point self that the invisible flapping is occurring.
