Bill!,

There's the Buddhist theme of "conditioned-arising".

Hetu-pratyaya.

I believe that's our same "cause-and-effect". A little the same.

This is a theme that helps in the (intellectual or logical) understanding of
selflessness. Because things always consist of material, or energy, that came
together to form or cause them, they are not themselves, but consist instead of
these other disparate things, ...which themselves are not themselves, but are
made and caused by yet other things previously, an so on down to the last
Turtle. ;-)

As, a flower is made of non-FLOWER elements (water, Calcium, Phosphorus,
polysaccharides, etc., just guessing).

So, that's conditioned-arising, hetu-pratyaya. Maybe exactly our
cause-and-effect?

I see a relation to the "Karma", you mention, or its so-called Law. But karma
is often taken to apply to the actions of Beings, whereas hetu-pratyaya seems
more general, and applies to *ALL CHANGE* anywhere.

An appreciation of hetu-pratyaya can gives, too, a fuller appreciation (again,
intellectually or logically) of Impermanence: Since things are not really
"themselves", then what is it that is impermanent?

But this Impermanence is so closely bound with Selflessness that it's hard to
get my wrecking-bar in there (and all this thinking gives me a little twinge of
discomfort behind my sinuses).

Ha-choo! I must be allergic to thinking. ;-)
