I think that the stick is said to have been a bamboo, fashioned so that it 
could be used in wiping while in the toilet at the Ch'an monasteries of the 
time, anciently, in China.

The stick -- in some translations of the story, and in other important Ch'an 
story references-- is given as, "shit-wiping stick".

Important in Zen history!  And obviously now.
