Chris,
I have most often sat all my sits at home since about 1972 (and, since 1979,
under Ch'an tutelage) just by the seat of my pants.
When I feel the body has had enough, I'll come out of meditation slowly by
beginning the procedure Sheng Yen taught us: by moving the mind first, then the
body in ever widening circles (cones...), with the apex at the waist, first in
one direction, then the other, alternately. Then, unfurl the legs, and carry
out the self-massage Sheng Yen taught on each leg (and as I teach now to
meditators in all traditions), leaving the feet alone, then the waist, chest,
back, arms, neck, face. Then stand. Then maybe do some odd-number of
prostrations very slowly, or else do some walking. Then maybe sit again. The
second long sit is usually deeper than the first.
I seldom time my sits, now.
But I like converting these commercial kitchen timers from beeping to flashing.
The latest brand (tiny one!) is the "Polder" timer. Keeping up my soldering
skills at least, since I don't work on telescope instrumentation anymore
(lately), nor spacecraft ground-test equipment. ;-)
