Edgar,
Laughter is good.
When we practice in big communities, timing becomes important; synchronization
may be by mechanical, electrical, or other means. It's all to keep the
Community on the TEACHER'S schedule (and the Kitchen's, etc.)
I've been designing and building really accurate sundials, BTW, which correct
for a site's displacement w.r.t. a local whole-hour meridian, and which correct
for the Equation of Time on each date. It is my modification of a "Polar
Dial", and uses my proprietary, calculated and machined, moving parts. The
limiting factor in the accuracy of my dial is the user's ability to see -- and
"say" -- where the shadow is upon the dial. Shadows are funny... . I've made
it easy, but it still depends on the operator.
The key point about timing in Zen practice is that it is for Training, and for
the smooth continuance of monastics practicing together after awakening. But
new postulants are continuously incorporated into the community, so timing
keeps THEM in line in all ways, too. And, as you know, sometimes a
practice-place is opened up for tourists to practice, also, and then timing and
schedule-keeping becomes even MORE important.. as you ALSO know!
Having a good laugh here, too! TNX.
;-)
