Mike, Iain,

I remind you all, also, that it's not just "the shadows" that make the moon
appear to go through changes. It's our point of view.

Viewed from the Sun, there ARE no shadows, period (unless there's something
brighter). Just think about that. The Sun never sees a shadow.

Viewed from Earth, of course there are shadows to see from here.

The shadow of the Earth -- otherwise known as "Night" -- is what lets
Astronomers do their work.

The variety we have... share... partake in, from Earth, is better, I think,
than the monotony of the scene as seen from the Sun. The Sun has a life so
much like ours before the Absolute became the 10000 Things. Pretty boring,
with nothing going on.

Tibetans make a bigger point of Sun and Moon than we do in the Zen sect, and
who can blame them. But an appreciation of Sun and Moon, and of the Sky of
Samadhi and the Moonlight of Wisdom, which jointly form the temple of our
practice, is not lost on Zennists.

Images or metaphors may be limited in what they show or describe, but don't be
surprised by how very far they actually go when one finds one can take them
literally. The moonlight I speak of is right at the heart of things.
