I think it was both Huang Po and the fellow who chased the Sixth Patriarch in 
search of the Dharma (not the robe).  They both speak of tasting water and 
knowing for oneself whether it is warm or cold, as a metaphor for sensing 
themselves their awakening to their true nature.

So, see the PLATFORM SUTRA OF HUI-NENG; and, the Record of Huang-Po.  I'd like 
to know from you what you say the Chinese says.  Thanks.
