Edgar, I've watched them; the ones I watch(ed) bring dead members of their tribe back down into the ant-hill.
I can't vouch for whether these Workers eat the reclaimed dead ants themselves, or else present them to the Queen to eat. I don't think they bring them back into the colony just for "burial". But that they do bring them into the anthill is indeed my observation, and not to do with knowledge. At the moment I forget who is the great ant-behaviorist. But here's a book by Deborah Gordon on ant interaction networks and colony behavior. http://www.amazon.com/Ant-Encounters-Interaction-Networks-Behavior/dp/0691138796 The cover illustration may give Merle an idea for another great drawing. Merle's "Fungi" drawing is pretty amazing. Ah, yes, memory returns: E. O. Wilson, the evolutionary biologist. He was just on Ira Flatow's NPR "Science Friday" radio show this past Friday, discussing his new book, LETTERS TO A YOUNG SCIENTIST, http://www.amazon.com/Letters-Young-Scientist-Edward-Wilson/dp/0871403773/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1372023816&sr=1-2&keywords=e.+o.+wilson ...which sounds great, and like a distillation of observations of Science talent, and on Science-teaching, during his many years teaching at Harvard. He is age 83, now. The "Science Friday" segment with Prof. Wilson is below: http://www.sciencefriday.com/playlist/#play/segment/9146 and the general intro-page is here: http://www.sciencefriday.com/segment/06/21/2013/e-o-wilson-s-advice-for-future-scientists.html So, do ants eat their dead? I won't say! However, I wanted to give you chocolate-covered ants on your birthday, but they wouldn't stop eating the chocolate. BTW, if zen has an "antithesis", that zen is not Zen. --Joe > Edgar Owen <edgarowen@...> wrote: > > More ignorance of reality which is the antithesis of Zen. > > Ants don't eat their dead, they carry them away from the nest. ------------------------------------ Current Book Discussion: any Zen book that you recently have read or are reading!
