Merle,
Ha; you ought to talk. Country founded from a population of penal outcasts...
.
It's instead the threat and fear of becoming a social outcast, and even of
being deprived of freedom under the Law.
Bad behavior obviously yet appeals to certain sociopaths, but their nervous
system is not normal.
I think it's risk of becoming a social outcast that keeps most people acting
civilly. But some others are actually guided by true empathy, and even true
compassion. Maybe many.
In those awakened to Zen-Mind (No-Mind), there's the recognition of everyone
and everything being fingers of One Hand. And one will not cut off one's nose
to spite one's face. This is the truest basis for "morality", because it is
No-Morality, born of No-Mind.
It is the *ONLY* goal of Zen practice through the millenia.
And so, I mention it here. In our Zen Forum.
