I think the implication in your last statement is wrong here:  "...animal 
versus human".

Humans are animals.  So IMO the pertinent questions are:

- Are humans qualitatively different than animals?  (Do humans have a 
completely unique quality that sets them apart from other animals?)
- If so, does this quality improve the lives of humans, or detract from them?
