Making us all lepers to some extent in this society where we are made numb to violence in all it's forms.  Please pardon me, list, for spelling out what Jody said far more eloquently.

Dear Jody and all Sangha,

I learned a lesson about pain from lepers.  I found
out the reason they have such deformities and damage
to limbs is because of the numbness that is a symptom
of the disease.  As a result of lack of feeling, they
do things that harm themselves and persist in the
harmful behavior.  They don't take steps to heal
properly.  They become less able to take care of
themselves and others.
