Yes, these rules were developed in a culture where women were chattel, property, so 
to even acknowledge that they could have a spiritual life and become enlightened was 
revolutionary.

I've spoken with fully ordained nuns who say the monks that really get a rush from 
being at the head of the line never last, they return or break their vows in a few 
years. 
Wrong motivation I guess.

Oh, by the way, there is one place where seniority doesn't hold... the bathroom line. 
There is a special exception in the Vinaya, because juniors kept getting bumped to 
the back of the line and "falling over stiff from holding it in." So at the bathroom, 
it's 
first come, first served. 

And that is where this started, isn't it? =)
