Perhaps you are familiar with vipassana or mindfulness meditation? The idea is 
to "consciously watch/observe"--to disengage "me" from "that". The observed can 
be thoughts, feelings, sensory experiences, breathing, etc. Sometimes "that" is 
a painful sensation--a physical pain, or a negative emotion. The consciousness 
of "that is mine"--identification--leads to suffering. It is an optional choice 
of ownership! The more we can disengage, the more we can see our true nature, 
our original face, void of all modifications...
