Shikan-taza is only a part of a practice. Doing shikan-taza without a sangha and a teacher is like having sex without a partner. It might be somewhat satisfying in a self-indulgent way, but it is not really having sex. If you have a teacher..then ask them your question...if you have a sangha...ask one of the more experienced members you trust your question. If you have neither a sangha or a teacher.....then find one before you practice shikan-taza.....or wonder forever if you are masturbating to much or too little.
