Autistic Boy, Family Heartbroken Over Missing Pet
Family Searches For Lost Iguana

POSTED: 5:48 pm PDT May 4, 2005

SAN DIEGO -- The family of a 12-year-old autistic boy is hoping for the safe
return of their family pet, 10News reported. Pamela Stutzka told 10News that
her son Steven is heartbroken over his missing best friend, a 3-foot long
iguana named Fred Green. "It's just broken our family. He's a member of our
family," Stutzka said.

Fred Green hasn't been seen since Saturday, when he was laying in the back
yard. His family believes he was either stolen or decided to go exploring on
his own. Until then, he acted more like a cuddler than a crawler. "He crawls
in bed with Steven every night and he'll literally lay on his pillow next to
Steven. I put (a) heating pad on the pillow, too," Stutzka told 10News.

Steven, who is autistic, has started to regress since the iguana's
disappearance. "Ever since Fred was gone, Steven's been in the back yard for
hours and not communicating. Monday morning he couldn't get on the bus -- he
just broke down. It's like seeing little switches turn off," Stutzka said.

Last year, Steven matched the highest scores in the state for reading and
math for 12 year olds. Recently, he has won several gold medals at the
Special Olympics. Now, when he tries to speak, the words just won't come
out.

Fred Green can be anywhere and the family is hoping he is found or returned
soon. "Just bring him home or call us. We have fliers out all over the
neighborhood," Stutzka said. If you have any information about the missing
iguana, call (619) 429-7319.>>

In Zen terms, did the Zen Master (Iguana) feel he had taught the boy all
that the boy could learn? Did the Iguana feel that the boy had become too
dependant? Was he trying to shock the boy to a greater self-realization?
Clearly, the Iguana was an incarnation of some past Zen Master, or perhaps a
previous Dalai Lama? The child had made excellent progress. Did the Iguana
just transform itself back into its true form and then leave? Do you think
that the transforming connection between the child and the Iguana was pure
luck? Do you think that the particular Iguana in this story was nothing more
than just a random reptile?
