Deeply pleasurable and painful experiences lead to one-pointed concentration. 
At least that's been my experience. ;-) The key is intensity. Unfortunately, 
these peak experiences never last. Peak experiences are just that--they rise, 
peak, and fade away. Such experiences can not quench desire or attachment.
