One trap is to identify with emotions and get all caught up in their arising and ceasing. It is another potential trap to imagine that "I" am some untouchable, undefinable "observer" which merely watches everything. This is also grasping at self. Nevertheless we can talk about "observing the emotions" as a means of expression, which should not be taken up to mean that there is an observer separate from the emotions.
