Watching a movie. You and an enlightened master sitting next to you are in the movie theater, the lights go down, all the previews are over, you've finished your popcorn and are ready to watch the movie. It's an epic adventure--romantic love, wars and conflict, children being born and maybe some bathroom comedy thrown in to break the intensity. It turns out the movie is pretty damned good and you really get engrossed with the movie and start to identify with the main character. Right in the middle of the movie, the master next to you taps you on the shoulder. It brings you out of your identification with the movie and you look at the master and he looks at you. Then he points up to the movie projector, traces the beam down to the screen with his finger and points at the screen with all the actors and action taking place. You see it for what it is. A movie. But then you start watching and nearly get engrossed again. The master taps you again. Again you step out of the movie. This back- and-forth process goes on for some time until finally you just can't get engrossed in the movie anymore. You have reached a point where you are permanently aware you are watching a movie. The movie is still going on, but you are no longer engrossed. You are just present and watching. Eventually, the master taps you on the shoulder one more time and you understand. At that point, you leave the movie theather never to return. > > David (who is going to go watch Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy today :-)
I love your analogy, great way to show that you must be aware at all times, that is Zen. Mack > -- > _______________________________________________ > NEW! Lycos Dating Search.
