What is the solution?  Even after the fact, you still do not know why the employee acted the way he did.  I don't think that the solution is in a reaction that is based on what you think the reason for the employee's behavior was, whether you thought he was deaf or you thought he was an asshole.

Aristotle said that virtues lie in the middle of two extremes.  (I'm counting that as my citation, by the way :))  On one extreme in this case is extreme attachment to manners and the needs of the employee.  You as the customer have your own needs, it would not be your place to continue standing by the employee and ask over and over again for help.  On the other extreme, complete ignorance for the humanity of the employee is equally detrimental to your cause, because you need to cooperate with him (or another employee) to complete the shopping.  Why would you slow yourself down by assaulting him?  Even if he was just an asshole, you can only slow yourself down more by being an asshole back.

So if the solution lies in the middle of being attached to your needs and being attached to the employee's needs, and both solutions are based on you think the reason probably is for the employee's behavior, then I think the solution is independent of the reason why the employee acted the way he did, but is also accountable for the actions themselves for what they are.

Honestly, I think that chanting and singing Kumbaya would really have worked if you had the time.  I probably would have done something similar to that.  In fact, for that reason I would not have been so as pissed off on the ride home as I would have been grateful for the opportunity to do that in the middle of a pet store to an un-audience of one!  ...and then I would turn around because in the excitement I would have forgotten what I went to the pet store to get in the first place.  Mindfulness is never a bad thing... I plan on trying it one of these days.

Just trying to throw some kindling on,

Panda
