Dear friends,
The Shurangama sutra is like an encyclopedia. It will also be the first
sutra to dissapear in this world in the dharma ending age because what
it speaks of is too "true".
Based on the commentaries of Master Yuan Yin of China(around 50 years
of effort on it), its gist are roughly as below:
1)Theory(the hardest part to digest, yet very logical)
2)Practice
3)Results(Different practices compared and best practices for saha
human realm discussed(24th-recitation of buddha name,
25th boddhisatva-going back to original nature step by step using the
nature of hearing(not sure if I translated it correctly) )
4)Precautions(50 Demonic states).
In my opinion, this sutra is not easy to digest, and may relate it to
modern physics, psychology, biology, philosophy, mathematics as one
read through but the most important part is that it reveals the true
nature, indirectly(the Buddha is a good teacher whereby he usually
points to the moon, but will not get the moon for u).
I believe that especially zen practitioners should be aware of the last
section of the sutra, 50 Skandha Demonic states in the stages of
practice advancement. And I also hope that no one else here in this
forum got crazy or end up in the highest formless realm. There are a
lot of chinese versions for this sutra on the net but so far I only
find 2 english versions of this sutra on the internet by Master Hsuan
Hua of the City of Thousand Buddhas, Talmage, and Upasaka Charles Luk
if not mistaken from Hong Kong.
