One of the things that often gets missed by new users is needing an
understanding of what they mean by monitoring. What exactly do you want
to know about your VMWare systems? Zenoss has zenpacks for free that do
some VMWare monitoring as shown in the full list here:
http://www.zenoss.com/community/projects/zenpacks/
But they don't monitor ESXi, only full ESX. I'm actually not sure what
tools are available that aren't from VMWare to monitor ESXi.

Paglo isn't really analogous to Zenoss or Splunk as it's not something
you're running on your own server, it's a SaaS offering, with all that
implies. I expect that would be easiest to get going if just that you
aren't installing a server and doing configuration to monitor what you want.

For the vast majority of users, as soon as they get started with Zenoss,
they realize they want to customize or extend it beyond the initial
default setup. So I would expect some time spent configuring it and
getting it working for your environment. If you pay for Zenoss
Enterprise, Zenoss Inc also offers set up services and training, so if
you have the money, it's probably going to be easier if you have them do
the hard work.

I don't know your budget, your Linux knowledge or your desire to spend
time doing configuration to potentially save money. I also don't know
what your scale actually is or how much time you have to get this going,
or what sorts of devices beyond VMWare you want to monitor. I also don't
know if you need to keep your monitoring in house for security or
privacy. So it's hard for me to make a pitch for Zenoss Core. I would
expect that the least work would be Paglo, but it's also going to be the
lease customizable, extendable and certainly will cost the subscription fee.

If you do have the budget for Zenoss Enterprise, I'd also contact Zenoss
Inc directly for quotes, evaluations and their pitch.
