We use Splunk and Zenoss here but for two entirely different purposes. We use Splunk as a log repository and to build searches to help us understand performance, security issues, gather business intelligence, et cetera. Zenoss is used to monitor the health and availability of our operating systems, applications and other devices.
Splunk ain't cheap but it's a great tool for the purposes it is meant to serve. Zenoss Core is free which is priced just right.
