Dear Vivek, I agree with the Indian metrics in English poetry experiment. Try everything from Maatrik to Varnim with all the laghu and guru permutations. Mix them up with stress patterns and see what new poetry comes up. Only, are 'beats' and 'stress' the same thing? Everyone, including Indians, has a right to write in English (or French or Russian as it pleases one).No disp[ute is admissible there. But Indian languages have so many different sound-patterns that English stress may be dificult to achieve by Indians writing in English. For instance different is disyllabic in English but trisyllabic for most Indian speakers. What scansion would be suitable in innumerable cases such as this? I was simply saying that while we may play around with the various aspects of poetical language, and do it with unstinting attention, we may do well not to stray into stress-patterns/metrics when we read/write poetry in Indian Englishes. When we read English and American poetry, we shall pay due attention to metrics , if we have learnt some of those skills. Best. Subbarayudu ------------------------ Yahoo!
