The source filesystem needs to be read-only. It works at the VFS layer so it doesn't copy snapshots or clones over. Once mounted it appears like all the original data is instantly there.

There is an (optional) shadowd that pushes the migration along, but it will complete on its own anyway.

shadowstat(1M) gives information on the status of the migrations.
