It seemed like it made a minor difference but not as much of a difference as new MAFS makes. MAFS on E39 M5s seem to be consumable items... I did have a hard time finding it, none of my local Auto parts stores even knew what I was talking about. I ended up getting it from: http://www.midwayautosupply.com/detailedproductdescription.asp?19596, received it in a couple of days, no issues. I am not sure if it works any better than regular old Electrical Contact Cleaner though. -- Jamie Howton 2006 M Roadster 2000 M5 1995 M3 Hampshire, IL ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jun 2006 13:20:13 -0500 From: "Bill Proud" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Uucdigest" <bmwuucdigest@uucdigest.com> Subject: FW: FW: Sudden idle and surge/miss issue P1140 DTC Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I wrote a note to my full-time emissions and tune-up mechanic son re this topic . Here's his answer. Could be significant relative to Bosch ??.... Big Bad Bill the BMW Boy Bill Proud. we do it every day. Lint from air filters combines with breather oil fumes and coats the wires/resistors with a black hairy coating(so much for the burnoff self cleaning cycle). we clean with brake cleaner (leaves no oily residue) usually helps a lot and can watch fuel trims adjust accordingly . but we also see a lot of failures on them too especially bosch units . VW had so much trouble in fact the price was reduced from $400 to $40-80 ..... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jun 2006 23:08:01 -0700 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "[uucdigest]" <bmwuucdigest@uucdigest.com>, bmw digest <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Needed urgent: E36 //M3 MAF sensor Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Yelp! The subject says it all: Needed urgent: E36 //M3 MAF sensor. SFBay area. Going on the MAF sensor cleaning thread and that 'Jack lost 5mpg recently, I picked up a can of the CRC spray and went to clean the two sensor elements, er, there's supposed to be two, right? One seems to have gone poof like light bulb elements poof out, not there, just two tabs where the element used to be suspended from. Anyone got one within as short as possible a driving distance from the intersection of 101 & 85? will drive to pick up, seems the whole holiday weekend trip depends on getting this fixed, else its driving with the missing sensor 900 miles and 5 missing miles per gallon less than before. Can trade some parts I have around if you need/ want stock E36 M3 takeoff stuff, or a 2002tii fuel pump, else a good low cash price please. tia, Barry ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jun 2006 07:20:13 -0400 (GMT-04:00) From: Maverick <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: bmwuucdigest@uucdigest.com Subject: Re: Needed urgent: E36 //M3 MAF sensor Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sorry to hear of your plight and I wish I could help more, but I do have some advice. Spark plugs come out looking the same as previous sets too. Just that the cruising economy has been down. The only fault that is recorded is a MAF fault. I had been ignoring that as normal for the larger air tube and 24# injectors, but now that really is the problem. Did find that my air duct from the foglight hole lowers intake air temperature about 5 degrees at 80mph, and the round rubber 4" to 6" thick walled rubber plumbing coupler attached to the front of the Viper airbox is an effective heatshield lowering intake air temps at least 10 degrees. Can these elements melt? I do see heat sinking on teh inside sensor surface. Is there a temperature limit? Anyone got a takeoff from a euro MAF conversion, or is there a Siemens MAF from another model like a 328 or 323 that the sensor can be used from? tia, Barry Jason Kay wrote: >And besides stuffing the cat, running that rich could also be washing down the >cyl. walls and cause scoring... >-Jason >'86 951 "Sparky"'70 240Z "Dusty"'97 Contour "Bambi"'03 325xi "Daisy" > > >>Sorry to hear of your plight and I wish I could help more, but I do have some >>advice. >>I would not drive very far if she is going 5 less mpg. Rich means no oxygen in the feedgas. No oxygen, no fire. However during transitions to lean, the influx of oxygen can cause severe overheating and failure. Reminds me of the time a friend's Volvo had foam problems of the exact same nature. Only this car had a turbo and a longer, floppier intake hose. Upon sufficient throttle application, the hose would collapse from the vacuum and bam, instant power loss. Then you could let off the gas pedal and it would reset. Re-accelerate - gently, gently, up to maybe 1/2 throttle and bam, it would happen again. Very amusing. (and being a Volvo, one needs at least 1/2 throttle to do such mundane things as top 45mph) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jun 2006 10:59:34 -0400 From: "Steve & Barb Conner" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <bmwuucdigest@uucdigest.com> Subject: 99 540iA Service Engine Soon Light Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For over a year I have been trying to figure out how to troubleshoot a Service Engine Soon light that keeps coming and going. The car has 90k miles and I have recently changed all four O2 sensors. The intake manifold gaskets have also recently been changed to fix some leaking. I thought changing the O2 sensors would knock this out, but I still get two codes when reading codes with an Actron OBDII reader. The codes are P0171 - System Too Lean (Bank 1) and P0174 - System Too Lean (Bank 2). Any ideas?
