I in turn am buying her an E28 //M535i with a dog-leg box :-) Now I've looked at many options for the upgrade over the years. But short of spending big $ on Wilwood calipers I see a cheaper option. I'm looking at VW Corrado G60 280mm discs and calipers, I know the discs fit. Trouble is the mounting bracket to attach them to an E30 strut. I've been half planning to get a strut from a dead E30 and use it to develop the right bracket, but never had time. Does anyone know of a good solution? I could maybe use E28 front calipers as these take 280x25mm discs. Does anyone know if the bracket fitment is the same (granted it's a very long shot!). The E34 uses 302x22 discs, they fit under 15" alloys and stop wonderfully. But I don't know where to get a four bolt disc that size. And I'd likely need a larger diameter 635CSi(?) master cylinder I think? I really don't have the time or energy to convert to five bolt hubs sadly. One last question. If I just put in a larger master cylinder with the current setup will I see any advantage other than a firmer pedal? This is for B road use, not track. -- www.unixnerd.demon.co.uk/bmw.html - The Ultimate BMW Website :-) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Nov 2006 17:49:15 -0800 From: Bob Sutterfield <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <bmwuucdigest@uucdigest.com> Subject: Re: E30 brake upgrade Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> What brake problem are you addressing? When I tracked my E30 325iS I used stock-size Balo rotors and Performance Friction 90 pads with the stock calipers. On the road I used fairly aggressive lower-temp pads, Porterfield R4-S. I made sure I had fresh Ate fluid and I installed stainless-braided brake lines. I never had a problem with a soft pedal, fade, or any other symptom of overheating. I had enough brake authority to invoke the ABS at any speed up to ~110mph even with semi-race tires (Michelin Pilot Sport Cup). I'm trying to imagine how a naturally aspirated 318iS could use more brakes than that... Because unless you are racing or wanting to fill in the hole behind 17" wheels by the time you piece something together you would A) be done installing a specific kit months ago B) end up spending close to what you would have for the kit for something custom. The 25mm MC is a great upgrade if you go with larger brakes or really like a stiff pedal. I liked the 25mm MC with the Ireland kit I had on the racecar. Design will fit under 15" wheels with a rotor size of 11.75". ... and looking for sponsored-price "test pilots" also. ;-) - Rob ----- Original Message ----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: bmwuucdigest@uucdigest.com Subject: [UUC] E30 brake upgrade Date: Fri, 01 Dec 2006 00:47:01 +0000 > My fiance is going to give me the money to upgrade the > brakes on my E30 318iS for Christmas. When cold the gap is closed. Once the system warms up the gap widens and the signal is cut off. You can probably solve this yourself with a little solder reflow, but you'd have to get into the guts of the radio/amp. -Kevin ---------------------------------------------------------------- This e-mail communication is confidential and is intended only for the individual(s) or entity named above and others who have been specifically authorized to receive it. When cold the solder joint opens (the metal pulls apart, become intermittent) and once warmed closes up. That's surprising, and I'd love to feel the difference. My 325iS's stock brakes with race pads were exceedingly capable. > However, for the average driver, bigger brakes are just bling as you say. The car in motion is suprisingly graceful. LOVE the anti-tank round.
