I got the opportunity to drive the new 330i for a bit... I wanted to love the
car, but it left me lacking in several important areas...

The steering.
What happened to the great BMW steering? (Electronic assist, unfortunately)...
Several times I found myself wondering if I got into an airport rental...
The car had a more than willing motor that still makes great noises (even with
the stock muffler), and even strapped with the autobox, the (with manumatic
shifting, why did they make you pull back to up-shift? I screwed that up so
often, I just left it in sport!) the engine was willing, and sounded great, but
the car just felt dead compared to the E46 325!

The ignition...
Push here to start.
Whatever. Its cute and gimmicky, and your finger is there to insert the fob...
just like the key, it won't let you grind the starter accidentally... is this
'racey' touch to make up for the steering?

The window switches…
BMW was always diff. by having all the window switches grouped around the
shifter on every 3 series I've ever been in. It was almost a trademark Saabs'
floor mounted ignition, or 911's with the key on the left... Until now. Why
did they have to mount them SOOO far forward? I actually have to lean forward
to group for them.

Turn signals.
I never thought about turn signals, but these felt "electronic" vs the
electro-mechanical units I’ve used in every other car... they were harder
initially to modulate, but like in windows, the newness goes away after a bit...

The Xeon Headlights were great, I liked the design "eye" light-pipe, and the
auto-leveling was fun to watch every time we started it up at night... and they
really light up the road at night. My next car will def. have these!

All in all, nothing, except the steering, was really a deal-killer...
I seriously hope that the Sport oriented packages kill the electronic steering
assist, or they find out a way to get the 'feel' back... of course going on a
diet and losing a few hundred/thousand pounds wouldn't hurt (along with a
manual :)

Do you mean road feel or steering weight? The
last E92 I drove had mediocre feel but more
weight than any E46, and was heavier than even my
E24M6. Or maybe this one had Active Steering,
which I've only experienced in an early E60. The
pull-back-to-shift was implemented in MY02 to
match SMG (which in turn matches race cars with sequentials).

Stupid and gimmicky. Too many steps just to start/stop the damn thing.

The 3er is the last to go to door-mounted
switches. 5/7s switched a decade ago.

I like the flick-to-flash-3-times (which you can
add in older models) but undoing a mistake is a pain.

I'm guessing your E46 doesn't have xenons. Angel
Eyes are still gimmicky but they're now the DRLs
so they actually have a function. I do like how
they fade in when unlocking the car.

I mean Road Feel... its weighted fine, but a rental Mitsu. Galant has the same
amount of road feel... I own a BMW not b/c its a got a roundel, but b/c its the
best sports sedan on the road.

I know, it matches the rest of the world, but it was still nice to be
different... besides, my biggest gripe is that they are SO far forward on the
armrest that they do not fall to hand readily, but you have to hunt for them...
and take your eyes off the road :(

yup, our E34 has the std. halogens... the 'angel eyes' are neat DLRs besides an
interesting design... I also like the super-bright white LEDs under the door
handles that fade on and off at night... no more hunting for the handles...

Hi All-
It's been awhile since I posted; I've decided to sell
my M3/4 and thought some on the list might be
interested. Details are here:

The car is in the Chicago area. Thanks for the BW, --SC

The Dension IceLink. It connects directly to the CD
changer harness, and allows the iPOD to be controlled
by the BMW CD43 head unit. The CD button on the CD43
toggles between the in-dash CD and the iPOD, which
shows up like a CD changer. I've been really happy
with it - highly recommended. --SC

I'm currently running Akebono Euro pads on the front of my E30 (no rear
application when I bought the fronts). They're quiet, nearly dustless and
have good stopping grip for a street pad. A brake pad hat trick? I have
no idea if there is an E60 application or not.

Subject: Which car?
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I sent this last Friday, but for some reason I am having trouble getting
through to the list...

Seems to be a rather slow day on the list, so this question ought to
perk things up:

I'm looking for a new(er) car... Easy enough. The trouble is in not
knowing exactly what I want! I sold my Porsche 951 and the 318is E36.
I loved both of those cars dearly, but it was time to move on to
something different. The door is pretty much wide open on this one, but
these are the candidates that I have been focusing on. So who's been
down this road before that has some experience with:

E36 M3 vs say an E46 328 or 330? Go with newer or HP?
E46 323? Lots of them out there at reasonable prices...
E46 vs E39?
Z3 or other 3 series convertible vs Porsche Boxster?

So convertible? 3 series? 5 series? M3? I don't know if I would
necessarily even rule out a 7 series. The car would be used mostly for
commuting and some distance trips, but I doubt I would ever use it for
DE or autocrossing. I would prefer a stick, but that's not even a
"must". Any input or advice to help me narrow down my choices is
appreciated!
