Let us know how much you end up spending on that used head. I haven't been
able to find one for less than $1000.00

I think you can get a valve job done on the existing head for less that
that...

Gruppe

I have a friend that has let the timing belt on his nice E30 325ic break.
Luckily it was at low rpm and all he did was bend some valves. I think it
will be the least expensive to replace the head with a used one. I am going
to help wrench on it as I have taken apart a couple of M50s but no M20s.
What else should he be looking at replacing while we are in there? I know
the water pump is right there, but is there anything else that stands out?
Car has 180k on it. Thanks.

What?

I would sell my entire M20 out of the parts car for less than that,
wait maybe I shouldn't. ;-) Actually depends on what future plans
are for that motor but Jack Money is parting out my old 325is and it
had a not too old redone head in it (3 years ago). Perhaps when we
take the engine out it could be parted out and the head sold
separately.

I haven't done a head refresh but my parts list would be something
like:

Head gasket kit
Timing belt kit
water pump
all accessory belts
all new coolant hoses
thermostat
maybe some new fuel hoses if they're all original

and just because I don't trust old sensors:
new coolant temp sensors, both the DME and the gauge one

I don't know what else but there's always something else while you're
in there.

What? I priced the rebuild of my head (broken rocker arm at close to 200K
miles), and it was more than $1K. I found an entire wrecked CAR with 54K for
$750. Keep looking. Rebuilt heads are available all day on ebay for $3-400.

Right you are!

Here's one for $300 on ebay...no refunds tho...

A fair machine shop should hit you about $3-400 excluding R&R from the car
of course

If BMW says it takes 14 hours then it will take me about 20 :)

I'm not in a hurry, just wanted to gather info. Front seal might be needed
also..

Is there special tools if I need to do that?

Thank you,
Ivan

You don't want to remove the lower cover.
BMW says that job takes 14 hours, so someone who's never done it before
is likely to take 30 hours.
It is extremely rare for the lower cover to leak.
If you remove the oil pan, you will need to replace both gaskets.

You will need the special tool to hold the crank still while you break
the hub nut loose. And you'll need a very large breaker bar to loosen
it, and to tighten it.

And a giant torque wrench, no? The S50 torque spec was 300lbs/ft. Luckily
a friend had a 5' long 1" drive that worked. I had to have someone sit in
the car with their foot on the brake while I torqued it down. What's the
M62 torques spec?

That's when I found out my clutch was slipping..... Couldn't get past
250lb/ft

Marco

I think I recall that there are issue(s) to be addressed as it relates
to the BMW Diversity Antenna (and if you don't address it, you'll have
worse that stock Radio Reception)?

Also, anybody have make/model recommendations that might provide an
AUX input (for an external media device, not necessarily an iPOD, via
it's headphone output) while attempting to maintain a look that isn't
"Lights of Vegas" cheesy (maybe even has a color that roughly matches
the BMW Red/Orange)?

Thx!,
Dave
