AH!!!

setenv XAPPLRESDIR /sw/etc/app-defaults/

Having that in my environment does the trick!

Solved!  It would help to have fink tell the user, at the end of the
install, that the above is needed in their environment!

It's not clear though why the installed fink didn't default to that.
