Hi As was stated below, you can control whether JAWS starts automatically with the JAWS Startup wizard or in the JAWS basic settings. Control+alt+j is probably the most used hotkey for starting JAWS. But a hot key is always assigned to a version of JAWS while it is installed. So assuming you're going to install JAWS 18 now, next fall will bring JAWS 19. So to again use control+alt+J with JAWS19 to start JAWS, you have to manually change the hot key or delete the hotkey or uninstall JAWS 18.
Rather than assigning hot keys to start JAWS, I prefer using the run dialog to start JAWS manually. In this dialog, tab to the Launch JAWS at Startup button and press SPACEBAR to open a second dialog box in which you can configure automatic starting up on both stages as you wish. Note that setting up launching on the Logon screen or for all users require administrative privileges; therefore, if your user account is a standard one, you'll only see the combo box to specify if JAWS will start automatically on that account. If you have Windows Vista or newer, you can also control these settings through the Windows Ease of Access Center that brings up by pressing WINDOWS+U, specifically through the Use the Computer without a Display WINDOWS+link for the current user, and the one that says Change Administrative Settings for setting up the behavior in the Logon screen. Unlike other screen readers, although JAWS automatically adds a Desktop shortcut, that shortcut does not include a keyboard shortcut by default. To add it one, find the shortcut in your Desktop, press ALT+ENTER to open the shortcut's properties dialog, tab to the Shortcut Key hot key edit, press the hotkey you want, tab to the OK button and activate it with SPACEBAR.
