Well, duh! I can't think of any interesting jobs that don't interact with the environment one way or another. If you write applications using a database you'll do much better if you know something about those too. If you write applications using a web server, it's best if you know that too. If you need to process files in SomeFormat, it's best if you know something about that. If you write applications that uses the Foo protocol, you'll be better off if you have some experience with that already. And so on and so on.
