As I understand it, the last version of 5.x was able to read the file format
of 6.x.

And it's a perrennial problem. I stuck to version 4.0 for a long time because
my hardware could not cope with the extra memory requirements of 5.0. I saved
up and bought a new computer that could cope with the extra memory
requirements of 5.0 and then 6.0 comes out, and I can't afford to buy yet
another new computer.

I do wish they would split off the bells and whistles like "Research
Assistants" into a separate program, and concentrate on making improvements
to the "core business" of Legacy.
