Apologies for the storm of E-Mail:s. Just to clarify; the error here
was:

   ERROR:  invalid input syntax for type bytea

Thus, BYTEA specific. I realize the handling of backslashes was
probably tested and never broken for VARCHAR:s. The intent with my
patch was to make it work with both.
