i finally got a winXP CD and found the time to install it in vmware.
unfortunately, vmware provides its "guest" OSs with a virtual video card
rather than direct access to the real/physical video card. when i tried to
install the ATI Catalyst software, it was unable to find an appropriate
video card, and exited. so underclocking our X1600s in winX-in-vmware isn't
an option.

Yea, we should have known that... VM's ALWAYS report your hardware as
something else. That's how they work. Emulate as a generic device, load a
generic driver.
