Solved.
My external CustomerCompany database didn't provide a
CustomerCompanyValid column, so I commented it out in the column mapping.
This was not a problem retrieving the customer company list in Customers
section but was a problem populating the CustomerID when add or modify a
customer in the Customer User section.

This is CustomerCompanySupport and is a parameter in CustomerUser,
which is likely customized for you in Config.pm.

And yes, it is possible to put CustomerCompany on a (single)
different DB backend.
Copy the relevant section from Defaults.pm to Config.pm and
modify appropriately.
