Unless the UI is so completely locked up that the old three finger salute doesn't get recognized. I'm assuming he's already tried that. When the latest HD failure in my desktop happened the system would lock up trying to load software from almost failed sectors on the failing drive. Sometimes the GUI would lock and only a hard reboot would get it going again.
