If Michael ever really quits this project, I vote for git or Mercurial. I don't know Mercurial, so I don't really have a preference between it and git. I do know git a little and I find it easier than svn to use. I don't think the burden of svn (versus some other system) is greater than the contributions of Michael (deliveries, fixes, testing, translations, vetting developers, insightful discussions...).
