I'm dealing with the idea in an abstract way of there's something in
this segment I want to pick out in order to alter it, and I want to be
able to describe as much as possible.

Being able to describe duration precisely is a key part of this, and
that's an incredibly complex subject when you start thinking about it.
What if I want to pick out all the double dotted 16th notes inside 22:2
tuplets that have flat symbols?

I'd like to have the ability to select for things in an extremely
precise and detailed way, but I think I will be crippled into inaction
if I try to implement every possibility I can think of.

My head hurts. I need to go have another think.

Indeed.
