I just would like to thank you guys for helping me to get started. I can now use Jack to record in Audacity, and I have installed TimeMachine as well. Also, I found patchage, which gives a graphical representation of jack's connections, and allows you to make and break connections with the mouse. I'm sure you all know about it. If not, be aware that flowcanvas (one of its dependencies) needs a patch from freeBSD to compile with recent versions of graphviz. That patch does not actually patch the troublesome file, but it creates another patch that will do so. Holler back to me if you want my build scripts.
