How did you start monitoring? I just press the red round record-button
in Audacity. It looks like this:

Does Audacity always crash when recording something?

I use always Audacity to record the vocals. Rosegarden plays the song's
part in an endless loop and Audacity records and records from the
microphone (via JACK).
After recording I choose the best take, cut it out and import it into
Rosegarden.
