No strong opinion. The current way did strike me as less than intuitive,
but my GUI intuition isn't always great.

Driving multiple synths that need different things.
It might make sense to default to one mode for all MIDI instruments but
let it be overridden per instrument if needed. More complex, though. No
opinion whether it's worth it.
