Thanks, that worked! In this case there were 376556 lines of output from fink and the message above was at 376393. So there were 163 wrapping lines of text away from the end of the display. With wraps that's over 300 lines. Of course I'm not going to look at 376556 lines of output to figure out what's wrong and I'm not likely to see it if it's more than 80 lines from the end. SO It would be useful for fink to collect such messages and repeat a summary at the end. Tom Thomas D. I just installed the latest xfig (3.2.6-2) using fink. It works, but I can't type into text boxes. I think I saw something about this somewhere, perhaps on fink but I can't get to the archive to check. The previous xfig 3.2.5c worked. Possibly relevant: I recently switched to Xquartz. I've gotten it to work two ways: 1) delete everything X and start over with Apple's X11. This includes everything that has dependencies on X. It's a long slog by hand and it'll be easier to delete everything and start over. 2) delete everything X and start over with xfree86 or xorg with NO BINDIST. This means COMPILE EVERYTHING YOURSELF. The bindist was made with Apple's X11 and will not (for me anyway) work with xfree86 or xorg. Obviously, both kind of suck. And for option 2, I'm not sure if it runs or not since I just finished compiling remotely and I have to go home to see if X actually runs. Brian: It looks in the application defaults file Fig, in the /etc/X11/app-defaults or /usr/etc/X11/app-defaults directory (you will have to find that directory and file) and it compares the Fig.version in that file: Fig.version:3.2.5c with the version compiled into the program. So if the executable says it is 3.2.5b-3 (title bar) then change that string in the Fig file to 3.2.5b-3. Ok, thanks for explaining. Neither /etc/X11 nor /usr/etc exist on my Mac OS X 10.7.5. xfig is installed in /sw/bin. Ah. /sw/etc/app-defaults/Fig is the file. It contains: Fig.version:3.2.5b That matches the title bar. Alexander: This is supposed to happen automatically after the app-defaults package is installed, though one either needs to start a new terminal or to source /sw/bin/init.(c)sh again. If you didn't start a new terminal or if you aren't using source /sw/bin/init.csh in your .cshrc (or whatever) to load all of Fink's environment hooks, then that would account for the variable not having been set for you. If you want to shut those errors up you can do a couple of things: 1) Use fink configure and turn off Use binary packages when available 2) Edit a few of the files from fink to point thee binary distribution in the right direction. I don't have access to 10.4 so I can't actually test what needs to be done, but try adding the following lines to your /sw/etc/apt/sources.list (don't replace the current ones yet): deb http://bindist.finkmirrors.net/10.4 stable main crypto deb http://bindist.finkmirrors.net/10.4 release main crypto If those do indeed work then I think I know what the edits within the fink code should be to fix this up right. Not sure how old the fink itself is ... If it needs an upgrade what do I do to keep the stuff I've already installed? Re: [Fink-beginners] 404 Not found!
Alexander: It's worse than I thought. You're on a completely unsupported configuration. Apparently the installer for 10.4/i386 works on 10.9, which is very surprising. There's no update path whatsoever, since we don't support i386 on 10.9, or indeed updates from any earlier distribution to 10.9. http://www.finkproject.org/download/10.9-upgrade.php?phpLang=en has suggestions about how to capture your list of installed packages. The current fink release for 10.9, which is fink-0.36.4.1, supports the current 10.9 binary distribution. https://raw.githubusercontent.com/fink/scripts/master/srcinstaller/Install%20Fink.tool is a script that will help automate the install process (it only works on 10.9) by automatically downloading that version of fink. I followed the directions (which is tricky since they keep on branching) and was then able to install xfig and it runs beautifully. That was going from a 2006 version to 2013. By the way, in your instructions you give a command that wipes out the /sw directory. Instead of doing that, I moved it to /tmp (using sudo). That way I could go back to the old version since it did have a running version of xfig. The version in /tmp didn't interfere and next time I reboot the files will go away. I recommend changing your instructions to mv instead of rm. In general I don't delete files, I just throw them in /tmp for safety. THANKS VERY MUCH FOR YOUR RAPID RESPONSE!!! Regards, Tom Thomas D.
