re: farting dogs
i have a few remedies that may help to cut down on this problem. 1. diet. there are some things that any individual dog may have an issue with as has been discussed on the list before. you may want to keep a diary of what your dog is eating when you have the problem. had to pretty much stop on the broccoli with one of the dogs, since it got way too thick in here after! 2. there is a beano for dogs. i think it is called 'curtail'. i haven't used it, but have talked to some people who have thought that it worked well with their dogs. 3. enzymes. some dogs just seem to need a little digestive enzyme additive. there are a lot of different ones out there. i have used one of these products for my girl with the sensitive stomach it has helped with both ends. 4. fennel. fennel tea can help with excess gas. you can usually buy fennel seed in the bulk herb section of the store. crush the seeds steep for 10-15 minutes. works for people too. lisa baldwin (dickens, bark zel) seattle, wa [EMAIL PROTECTED]

a friend of mine always bought old balls at the thrift stores for her briards. they seemed to prefer deflated soccer balls. we have a jolly ball one of those small soccer balls with attached rope toys. the jolly ball is preferred the rottweiler does not carry it by the handle, but always by the ball. lisa baldwin (dickens, bark zel) seattle, wa [EMAIL PROTECTED]

if anyone is interested, i got 17 answers to my little survey. thanks to all who responded. people came from all over the united states, plus one in england a few in canada. just over half had owned a purebred dog of another breed before. the time it took to get a puppy ranged from 1 day to 2 years. the average was just over 6 months. thanks again to everyone who helped to make my information for people looking for berners more accurate. lisa baldwin (dickens, bark zel) seattle, wa [EMAIL PROTECTED]
re: OFA Xrays - benefit to PO?
based on your ofa results, you may decide that you do or don't want to do certain activities with your dog. for example, i show my dogs in obedience do draft work with them. i won't jump a dog with elbow dysplasia ( i will limit, as much as i can, the dog's chances to decide to jump something) i would probably not think about training for an open draft title, due to the greater weight that the dog has to pull. i might also start some supplementation (probably glucosamine or something similar) in an effort to head off future problems. lisa baldwin (dickens, bark zel) seattle, wa [EMAIL PROTECTED]
re: alternative to neuter
this has been in the works for a long time. i remember first hearing about it around 10 years ago. at that time, they weren't talking about needing any sedation, just the injections it was done. the people involved were mostly thinking about a quick, low-cost method of neutering that would appeal to shelters. even now, not all shelters neuter outgoing animals. lisa baldwin (dickens, bark zel) seattle, wa [EMAIL PROTECTED]
need help on a question
this is a little questionnaire for anyone who bought their first bernese puppy in the last 3 years. i'm just trying to get a better answer for folks i talk to on the phone about wait time. 1) what region of the country are you from? 2) have you ever purchased a purebred dog of another breed from a breeder before the berner? 3) approximately how long did you wait between getting on a breeder's waiting list getting a puppy? thanks in advance for all of your help. lisa baldwin (dickens, bark zel) seattle, wa [EMAIL PROTECTED]

re: cracked nose
cracking noses can be a sign of autoimmune disease. my bernese has had a cracked nose it was diagnosed as lupus. cracking is different than discolouration. although discolouration can also be a symptom of autoimmune disease, it can also be caused by diet, light exposure, genetics. lisa baldwin (dickens, bark zel) seattle, wa [EMAIL PROTECTED]

american airlines breed profiling.
well, it looks like all of the letters of protest worked for once. lisa baldwin (dickens, bark zel) seattle, wa [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: American Airlines reverses breed profiling TO: All interested persons FROM:Jeffrey P. Helsdon, Legislative Director March 14, 2003 American Airlines is about to announce that, effective immediately, it is reversing its seven month old policy of profiling certain breeds of dogs from being carried as cargo on American Airlines carriers. The DPCA is the first dog organization, or any other organization, to break this news, which comes from the highest sources within American Airlines. The breed-profiling policy was adopted last August, after an AA flight to New York during which a dog escaped from the cargo hold and chewed through the cargo hold wall. The change in AA policy comes after an initial storm of protest from the pure-bred dog fancy in general, organized in large part through the leadership of the DPCA. Over the past six months, members of the DPCA Legislative Committee have conducted confidential, high level negotiations directly with AA officers charged with the responsibility for implementing the breed profiling policy. At one point, a DPCA Legislative Committee member held discussions with an AA officer in the first class section of an AA 747 traveling across the Pacific to China. As a result of the DPCA's intensive, high level negotiations, AA has crafted, and is about to implement, a crate securing procedure that will be used on all dog crates flying on AA flights irrespective of breed of dog being shipped, to ensure the safety of passengers and crew flying on AA. Releasable cable ties will be used on all crates flown in cargo. The reversal of the breed profiling ban is effective immediately. Between May and September, the crate securing procedure will be perfected on dogs flown in crates as cargo only. Dogs flown as additional baggage will be subject to the new crate securing procedure beginning in September, giving the procedure an opportunity to be perfected during the summer months. The DPCA is indebted to the efforts of numerous Doberman fanciers throughout the world who called, wrote, and e-mailed AA, which was flooded with mail in opposition to their breed profiling policy. A special thanks, which is well deserved, goes to Ms. Judy Smith, whose singular efforts on behalf of the DPCA to address this wrong are in large measure responsible for the success that we now enjoy. Please disseminate to all lists. Jeffrey P. Helsdon
FW: This is scary - News from AKC
i thought that this would interest the list lisa baldwin (dickens, bark zel) seattle, wa [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- From: Patsy Shuler [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 13 Mar 2003 17:04:47 -0800 To: unlisted-recipients:; (no To-header on input) Subject: This is scary - News from AKC From http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=1712 RI Bill Further Reduces Rights of Owners [Thursday, March 13, 2003] Rhode Island would take a giant step towards animal rights and away from the basic rights of animal owners if legislation introduced in February is allowed to pass. Help from Rhode Island clubs and individuals is needed to defeat this very real threat to responsible dog ownership. In 2001, Rhode Island became the first and only state to approve the guardian concept, an animal rights initiative that denigrates owners and equates owned animals with slaves. Animal rights activists were able to convince Rhode Island legislators that animals are not our property and we are not their owners. Rather than owners, activists campaigned, individuals who keep animals should be referred to as guardians. The AKC and other opponents argued that this was just the first step in a mission to end all animal ownership. HB5817 brings these concerns to reality, creating several new categories of animal neglect and abuse that will be enforced not just by police and special humane agents, but also must be reported by a whole series of professionals ranging from school employees to photographers to the media. If any of these experts suspect a guardian is not providing adequate care, the animal can be confiscated and guardianship terminated. In addition, HB5817 prohibits bodily alterations, a broad category which includes ear cropping, tail docking, dewclaw removal, and debarking. No one cares more about the welfare of animals than the purebred dog fancy and many dog fanciers may agree with some of the basic principles of HB5817. Unfortunately, HB5817 goes too far and threatens the rights of responsible dog owners. Animal care and control decisions cannot be blindly handed over to humane agencies. Owners, breeders, and veterinarians should retain some control and responsibility for making decisions about the care of pets. What the Bill Does: * Creates various degrees of animal abuse and neglect and makes aggravated abuse and neglect felonies. * Compels 21 categories of professionals to report suspected abuse and neglect (doctors, nurses, school employees, members of the clergy, attorneys, marriage and family therapists, photographers, employees of news media, firefighters, and more). * Allows animal care agencies to petition for termination of guardianship. * If a guardian is deemed unfit, he cannot possess any animal for at least 3 years and must repay costs associated with the care of the animal. * Creates animal abuser registry and requires notification of neighbors. * Bans procedures that disable or remove any part or organ, making commonly accepted elective procedures such as ear cropping, tail docking, dewclaw removal, and debarking illegal. Violators will be subject to fines and jail time. * Allows any guardian of an animal subjected to a violation to bring a civil lawsuit for actual and punitive damages of not less than $1000 per violation. * Requires motorists to immediately stop and render aid to any animal injured by the motorist, including all wild animals such as deer, opossums, raccoons, squirrels, and birds. * Makes individuals who cause the death of a person¹s pet or companion animal intentionally or negligently liable for up to $10,000 in noneconomic damages if the death occurred on the owner or caretaker¹s property or while under the control of the owner or caretaker. Noneconomic damages shall include compensation for the loss of companionship, love, and affection of the pet. re: blood donors
all of my dogs have been blood donors, including the 45# mixed breed. the small brown dog only gave 1/2 - 2/3 units, but apparently he had 'lucky' blood has saved a lot of dogs over the years. all three of the berners donated. dickens, at one time, was donating about every 3-4 weeks. we usually had the heaviest demand in spring fall. the rottie hasn't been called on yet. but, since i don't work at the clinic anymore, they keep forgetting that she's grown up now. lisa baldwin (dickens, bark zel) seattle, wa [EMAIL PROTECTED]
names
ty - i wanted to name my first berner after the emperor tiberius. he came from an h litter, so we used hircus for his h name - latin for goat. was entirely appropriate, since he ate anything was particularly fond of flowers. alpenrose hircus ti caesar. dickens - a christmas puppy born on 19 december. he came to me with the name dickens we registered him as alpenrose charles dickens. bark - we did figure that the little brown dog needed a long name too. so, based on his nickname that one of our friends gave him, he is formally shire bark-a-lounger. muffin - she came to us with the name raspberry i really did intend to call her razzy (honest suzanne!). she was registered as alpenrose farms raspberry. she was from an r litter. zel - we had a theme of guys babes with this litter since the sire was renegade the dam, babe. since i got the only girl, i think we did get cut a little slack. she is neu-rodes wild thing lives up to it every day. lisa baldwin (dickens, bark zel) seattle, wa [EMAIL PROTECTED]
assorted retrieving tricks
a simple retrieve can be renamed - retrieve stuffed sheep or cow - this is 'herding'. a friend of mine's sheltie would retrieve 2 stuffed sheep deposit them in a basket - 'the barn'. retrieve hidden toy - stuffed rat - this is the popular terrier game of 'hunt the rat'. teach the names of more than one toy teach to retrieve one particular one. retrieve wad of paper to trash can - pick up the garbage or do the recycle. we used to have a toy pedal operated garbage can a brussels griffon would retrieve a wad of paper open the can drop it in. retrieve a wallet that you drop as you walk the dog down the room - find the wallet (yep, you knew that old utility seek back would come in handy) and for the more laid back - how about go to sleep? dog does down stay on side, doesn't get up until you tell him it's morning. especially cute with a pillow blanket. lisa baldwin (dickens, bark zel) seattle, wa [EMAIL PROTECTED]
re: eating poop
one of the breed columns in this month's gazette is about a poop-eating dog. one thing that has worked for us to keep the dogs out of the kitty roca is to feed the cats forbid. this is a powder you can order or get from your vet to make the feces taste bad. it's supposed to work if your dog eats dog poo, but only if all of the poo he is exposed to tastes of forbid. ...and of course for every nasty tasting item, there is some dog who regards it as a gourmet treat. lisa baldwin (dickens, bark zel) seattle, wa [EMAIL PROTECTED]
re: allergies bmd
i would recommend that you find a veterinary dermatologist make an appointment. if your dog does have a food allergy, changing food around several times can make it more difficult to diagnose more expensive to control. your dog may also have something other than an allergy causing all of that itching. a veterinary dermatologist is experienced with all kinds of skin conditions can often do a good preliminary diagnosis from the history of the problem the physical exam, thus cutting down the amount of testing to determine the source of the problem. your regular veterinarian should be able to refer you or you can locate a dermatologist through your state veterinary medical association. lisa baldwin (dickens, bark zel) seattle, wa [EMAIL PROTECTED]
re: socialization
socialization needs to be continued for the first full year in my opinion. there is a second fear imprint period that occurs for most dogs somewhere in the 6 mos to 1yr area. this is a time to return almost to puppy style socialization especially for any individual dog who has had difficulties with earlier socialization for any breed of dog that tends to require more socialization - which would include bernese. with some breeds there does seem to be a genetic problem that doesn't pop up until the second fear imprint period. with dogs from these lines (we have particularly noticed it in shelties gsds) they hit that second fear imprint period like a wall recover slowly, if at all. just the experience of myself several of my friends who are trainers. lisa baldwin (dickens, bark zel) seattle, wa [EMAIL PROTECTED]
