Yes, your MSConfig is probably clogged up. And, have you thought about
adding more memory to your system? I might have spaced out when you
sent that email, and I am not sure if that has been suggested.

There are about 10-15 programs etc loading at startup. You're sure all I

will they stay there to recheck if I need them?

Have you tried using a registry cleaner? I have a laptop that from time to
time takes forever to boot and running a registry cleaner makes a
difference. If you haven't defragged your hard drive lately, you might
 give
 that a try too.

 Take care,

I've noticed over the last week or so the time my Acer XP Pro system is
taking to boot up and get JAWS going has increased tremendously. I tried
 it
with JAWS 8 as I heard 9 lags a bit but this made no difference. Only
other thing I did lately was install AVG antispyware and IE 7. I've
uninstalled the antispywareand again no difference. I don't want to
uninstall IE 7 as eventually this will be the version everyone will be
using. Has anyone else notice a decrease in boot up after installing AVG
antispyware and/or IE 7? I've defragged my hard drive and run reg scrub
neither of which made an appreciable difference. Anything else I can try
 or
 possible uncheck in MSCONFIG?

 thanks

Rick,

There are about 10-15 programs etc loading at startup. You're sure all I
need are the Grissoft (virus spyware) things? If I uncheck things there
will they stay there to recheck if I need them?

Hi Al,
Try opening the Windows Task Manager, and going to the processes tab, and
see how many processes are running.
It sounds like a resource issue, and there may be too many processes
running.
Also, you should check the System Configuration Utility,
(msconfig), and see how many programs are loading at startup.
Ideally, you should only need your security software loading at startup,
because allowing programs to load when they are not needed only uses
resources unnecessarily.
Additionally, there may be services loading at startup that are not needed.

2007-11-25 Thread Rick
Hi Al,
If you aren't sure about something in the startup group, then leave it be.
If you look at the path given, and find that the item in question resides in
the program files folder, then uncheck it.
If you find anything relating to windows audio, leave it checked as this
could affect the audio for the system.
If you wish, we can take this off-list, and maybe we can hookup by phone,
and I'll walk thru it with you.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Boot up speed

2007-11-24 Thread Jacob Kruger
The only thing I can sort of suggest is to check the Event log (if you're
running WinXP).

Start menu, Programs, Administrative tools, Event Viewer.

Then in the treeview on the left, you can check out either the Application
events, or the System events, and you could even try clearing their history
first, then reboot the machine, and see if there are many error/warning
events in there.

To clear them, just cursor down to the one you want to check out, use the
right-click/application menu key to bring up the context menu, and arrow
down to the clear option.

Then reboot the machine, open the event viewer again, arrow down to the one
you want to check out, tab over to the actual list, move up and down and you
should hear basic info for each item like the date/time, type etc., and if
you want more info, hit enter on it, and a dialogue will pop up where you
can tab around to get more detailed information.

This may not give you any useful information, but I reckon it's worth a try.

Stay well
