Re: SE/30s won't fully boot
From: Daan Goedkoop Well, I got one of 'em working last night; managed to boot it off install floppies. It ended up dropping it from System 7.5 down to 7.0, but it boots now. This is what happened when I installed a Lapis ProColor card in my SE/30. I couldn't boot with 7.5.5 with the card installed unless I turned off extensions by holding the shift key during boot. If you're booting up to the welcome screen, it could be some incompatibility if you have extra hardware installed. tt -- Compact Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/. Re: Mac Plus Repair - analog and logic board
The flaky joints you particularly need to check are the ones associated with the 4-pin connector that goes between the analog board and the yoke around the crt's neck. I think I finally found the culprit to the flaky video. I checked the joints on J4 and two appeared to be suspect, so I re-soldered all the pins with fresh solder. The problem still occurred until I started pushing on the wires near the connector and saw it would make the screen come in and out, so I swapped the wire harness for the J4 connector and now I cannot make the video go out. The problem could have been a combination of flaky joints and pins on the wire harness. As to the no bong problem, double-check the speaker, the capacitor in series with it (you'll have to do a little tracing), and the connections associated with them. I sort of checked along this path but didn't see anything significant. I'll have to check this out more thoroughly. And as to your other question about the micro screen logic board, doublecheck your ram. Make sure that the ram is good, installed properly, and that the ram size resistor is configured correctly for whatever ram capacity you've got. This is absolutely correct. The spare board I got came configured for more than 1MB of RAM, but I been using 256KB SIMMs. After putting in 4MB, the board operates normally, though I noticed the time for the floppy icon to appear takes a bit longer...is this normal? Mac Plus Repair - analog and logic board
I have a Mac Plus that I bought new that I am trying to get operational again. When it finally became unusable, the screen would go to a thin vertical line and sometimes it would work again if I tapped the case. This issue would happen right away upon turning the Plus on. I resoldered some of the joints (L2, C1, J1) on the analog board and it seems to be better, but there is no start-up bong when I turn on the machine. The screen appears normal with the flashing floppy icon. I haven't been able to do enough testing yet to see if the resoldering has fixed the issue after it has been warmed up for a while. What is the cause of no start-up bong? I also have a spare logic board that operates weird. At start-up, the screen is the size of a postage stamp, tightly surrounding a frozen floppy icon. The rest of the screen is dark. I haven't checked to see if it can boot, but I figure this is a significant failure. I have tested this logic board with a known good analog board and the board that I described above. Can this logic board be repaired? Thanks, tt -- Compact Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/. Re: Boot Partition Selection
For the older operating systems (pre 7.6?) one needed a utility usually included with the disk formatting software, in order to set which partition to boot from. I'm playing around with a couple different OS's: 7.0.1, 8.1, and A/UX. I can use the startup disk control panel to switch between two different physical drives with no problem, but I cannot isolate one bootable partition within a physical drive. Each partition only has one system folder present that is blessed. System Picker doesn't show any selectable system folders in the pull-down menu even though all the system folders are in the root of their respective partitions. I have seen System Picker work under emulation on my PC. A workaround I've been using is to put a folder within the system folder to hide the finder in for all the partitions except the one that I want to boot. I was hoping that there is a more elegant solution to picking a boot partition. Could the problem be caused by how the drive is formatted or the disk driver? -- Compact Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/. Boot Partition Selection
I installed a larger hard drive in my SE/30 and made a few partitions to be able to boot different OS versions, but I'm having difficulting specifying which volume to boot from. I used the startup disk control panel to select the partition I wanted to boot, and then when I open the control panel again to confirm it made the selection, it shows all the partitions as being selected. When I reboot, the first partition always boots no matter which partition I choose. The system folders in the other partitions are blessed. I used HD SC Setup 7.3.5 to format and partition the drives. I also tried System Picker, but it doesn't show any selectable drives...I'm guessing this utility is to pick through mutiple systems on one partition, not among different partitions. What is the proper procedure for selecting a partition to boot from? Thanks, tt -- Compact Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/. Re: System 6, Compact Macs on LEM today
Is it true that the Turbo 040 can run in an SE/30 without the adapter if you move the floppy? I thought I read somewhere that if you attempt to just plug it in directly without the adapter, it could damage the motherboard. Re: One injured Classic (and a bunch of minor repairs)
Dry alcohol (isopropyl is good, ethyl is too but you'll need a license for that in the US of A) will hasten drying but it's not required. Be sure the board is fully dry though before applying power. I just recently washed a mobo with rubbing alcohol (91% isopropyl) and used a toothbrush to scrub in between the capacitors and where I noticed corrosion. It did the job nicely, though, I rinsed with the alcohol only once, but after it dried, there was a dusty residue left behind. Next time I will rinse it better. The SE/30 now boots consistently compared to before, hopefully it will last. -tt -- Compact Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/. Re: SE/30 Woes!
These explanations are great to the understanding of what issue being treated by washing these boards. I would be somewhat concerned that exposing the board to water may drive contaminants further into crevices, but doesn't seem to be a huge issue from first-hand successful accounts. Perhaps it would be good to use compressed air to blow off loose contaminants before dishwashing. Promoting oxidation may be another issue if there is exposed metal that is not properly tinned or coated. For those that don't have a dishwasher, could another solution be to soak the board in some isopropyl alcohol in a small tub? Or submerge the board in a warm bath of soap followed with rinsing? Someone also mentioned that drying in a dishwasher is ok since the parts were originally reflowed during assembly. However, reflow is done in a controlled environment with the temp. of the parts being ramped up and down at certain rates to avoid thermally shocking the components and joints...the air is also drier. With older boards the risk of damage could be higher from solder aging, etc. tt On 10/25/05, Liam Proven [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On 25/10/05, Doug McNutt [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: That's a bit of oversimplification in a helpful description aimed at less than engineering folks. I've been on these lists for a few months now and am wondering if anyone was ever in my old position as a school computer admin from back in the day. I got my job in September 1992 and retired in August 2005 so I could do more freelance consulting and repair. Back when I started we had a ton of Classics, Pluses, SEs, and LCs. In my last few years we got new personel in our IT department (and Windows computers) and I wound up being the only one who knew how to operate on the older machines. My last job as an IT guy at my school was to donate 100+ older Macs from Classics to 5200s to a charity. I left with the Macs, in other words (but that wasn't a factor in my decision). Being in a school position I not only had the hardware and software experience in mass quantities (especially in the high school where the machines got abused), but I also got to try out a ton of academic software. This is what I am curious to...there don't seem to be any webpages dedicated to the history of Macintosh educational software and I am wondering what other people's opinions on the greatest software products for 68000-68030 Macs are. I like Super Solvers products (OutNumbered for math, Midnight Rescue for reading) the best for elementary kids. If anyone else has some experiences to share about these programs (or if you were a student in the late 80s-early 90s and you used these programs) let me know...one of my projects is to put together that missing webpage about Mac Education. IIfx vs. IIsi ROMs for SE/30
If one has the choice, which ROM (IIfx or IIsi) is more suitable for the transplant (from actual experience)? Re: SE/30 Upgrades
Hi All, Thanks for your replies. My motivation for the first post was that I am considering installing System 8.1 on the system, but the system is noticably slower with 7.5.5 on it. I'm not looking for the unit to be super fast, but at least similar to the speed of having System 6 on the SE/30. I will need to boost the RAM since 8 megs is definately not enough, I was thinking adding 4 x 16 megs on one bank for the possibility of adding more later if I happen to see some that is inexpensive. Where are good places to look for this hardware online/offline? I live in the San Jose Bay Area, are there any good places to check out besides Weirdstuff? If you have any other upgrade options you think are cool, let me know. Does anyone have an accelerator card they would like to give a good home? Re: Free SE/30, Classic Classic II's
I picked up a Classic today from the place, which is pretty much down the street from me. The guy said that they have Mac Classics left, so if you order one, that's what you'll be getting. Based on the $37.08 that I saw when I got most of the way through the on-line order process on the site, you're paying for more than just shipping. It would seem that they are running their shipping department as a profit center. Willi -- Compact Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/. SE/30 Upgrades
Hi All, I just recently revived my SE/30 by replacing it's analog board and was wondering what would be some of the best ways I could upgrade the unit. The system is mostly stock with the exception of a newer HD and an Asante ethernet card. Re: 400/800k disks
I think you can use any contemporary 3.25 inch floppy (like 2HD) for an older system. I have heard that if you format it in 400k or 800k and then try to use it as a 1.4MB, the newer drive may have a hard time wiping off the older file system.
