Bolivian president addresses nation, blames unrest on drug runners

By PETER McFARREN

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) -- Bolivia's president blamed a rash of violent
protests on cocaine traffickers, saying Thursday that they're trying to
destabilize Bolivia in order to protect their drug crops.

President Hugo Banzer said in an address Thursday evening that the
government will stand firm in its effort to eliminate cocaine trafficking in
the country. But violent protests of the government effort has left 10
people dead and more than 100 injured in the last week.

"For us to stop the eradication of coca leaves is to turn over the nation to
cocaine traffickers," Banzer said. "We will not surrender in our fight
against cocaine trafficking, and those who believe we will are wrong. We
will not tolerate any more violence and disorder."

His remarks were the first since coca leaf growers and farmers began setting
up roadblocks throughout the country to protest the eradication effort. On a
separate front, public school teachers went on a general strike this week to
protest government layoffs.

"We are facing acts of sedition that are being led by sectors backed by
cocaine traffickers," the president said.

A clash with soldiers Thursday killed two farmers and a school teacher in
the Lake Titicaca border town of Huarina. Two coca farmers were killed
Wednesday in the Chapare region. Confrontations between soldiers trying to
lift roadblocks and protesting coca producers, farmers and teachers left
five others dead this week.

About 5,000 acres of coca leaf remain in the Chapare, a lush tropical region
380 miles east of La Paz. It's about 5 percent of what existed four years
ago. Farmers are feeling the loss their main cash crop -- the base
ingredient used to make cocaine.

Banzer has said Bolivia will no longer be producing cocaine by the end of
the year.

The roadblocks went up two weeks ago in the Chapare, after coca farmers
demanded the government stop its eradication of coca plants and abandon
plans to build three military barracks in the region.

The roadblocks spread to the Bolivian Andean highlands, where farmers
demanded revision of land reform legislation and an end to coca leaf
eradication efforts.

They have interrupted traffic to Argentina, Chile, Peru and across the
country, and left hundreds of trucks and buses stranded. Thousands of tons
of food have been dumped and left rotting because of the roadblocks.

Vegetables and fruit have nearly disappeared from city markets. Meat, dairy
and other food products have been flown in from producing areas.

Government estimates of losses due to protests have surpassed $100 million.

The government mobilized thousands of soldiers and police to end the
blockades, but new roadblocks go up as soon as old ones are cleared.

The politically incorrect professor

Is political correctness a "hate crime"? The federal government defines
hate crimes as "crimes that manifest evidence of prejudice based on race,
religion, sexual orientation or ethnicity, including where appropriate the
crimes of murder, non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, aggravated
assault, simple assault, intimidation, arson, and destruction, damage or
vandalism of property." Consider the case of Dr. Richard Zeller, formerly a
professor of sociology at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green,
Ohio. After 25 years of teaching at the school, Dr. Zeller retired in
protest. Why? He wanted to teach a course on political correctness. From
talking to students, Zeller learned that many felt pressured to adopt
politically correct views in order to get a passing grade. One student told
Zeller that, in order to get a good grade, a professor virtually forced the
student to agree that all whites are racist. Another student said that he
felt pressured to adopt a "pro-choice" position on abortion, even though he
considered himself staunchly pro-life.

Professor Zeller got an idea. What about a course on political correctness,
on the tyranny within academia that forces students to conform to a
prescribed set of views?

Zeller put together a proposed course curriculum. He included books like
"Illiberal Education" by Dinesh D'Souza; "The Bell Curve" by R. Herrnstein
and C. Murray; "Two Steps Ahead of the Thought Police" by J. Leo; "Inside
American Education" by Thomas Sowell; "A Nation of Victims" by C. Sykes; and
"Civil Wrongs: What Went Wrong With Affirmative Action" by S. Yates.

But Zeller's sociology colleagues said "no" to the course. Zeller protested,
and ultimately the sociology department voted on whether or not he could
teach the course. Zeller lost 9-5.

Zeller then attempted to teach the course in other departments, but no other
department granted approval for the course. So much for academic freedom,
for diversity of thought. Not only that, Zeller found friends few and far
between.

For example, one newspaper quoted BGSU's Dr. Kathleen Dixon, the Director of
Women's Studies, who said of Zeller's attempted course, "We forbid any
course that says we restrict free speech!" We forbid any course that says we
restrict free speech?!

A BGSU ethnic studies professor said that Zeller's attitude would help
students " ... feel good about the ruling paradigm, which since the
inception of the United States, has said that genocide is good, racism is
better, and exploitation of the women and poor is the best way to go." Gee,
poor Zeller thought he was simply teaching a course on political
correctness.

How about professor Gary Lee, the BGSU Sociology Department Chairman, who
said, "Unfortunately, tenure protects the incompetent and malicious; Rich
has tenure, so he cannot be fired without cause." Fired? For wanting to
teach a course in political correctness? For good measure, Zeller also
received death threats, and someone wrote "Zeller you die" on sanitary
napkins left on the professor's front porch at home.

Weary of the battle, Dr. Zeller offered his resignation. In a letter to the
school, Zeller expressed his frustration and anger. He directs his concern,
said the professor, not at himself, but at the students deprived of an
education that challenges assumptions and questions the status quo.

Zeller said, "But don't cry for me. I'm doing just fine, thank you. Cry out,
instead, for the students who regularly get intellectually mugged on the
BGSU campus"; "the traditionalist who believes that marriage is between a
man and a woman, but can't say so for fear of failing"; "the conservative
who believes in minimizing government interference in our lives and says so
in a sociology class"; "the woman who believes that abortion is murder, but
must write a pro-choice essay to pass English 111"; and "all of those who
have 'adjusted' and 'self-censored' their ideas so that they can pass their
classes."

Zeller also said, "BGSU has sold its soul to the thought police of political
correctness. There was a time that ... honorable people could disagree
honorably; now, any challenge to the campus sacred cows (feminism,
affirmative action, and multiculturalism) is denounced as evil."

About Zeller's travails, the Christian Science Monitor's Sanford Pinsker
said, "Amid all the self-congratulatory talk about diversity one hears on
American campuses, it is not at all clear that intellectual diversity is
alive and well. If the result

EDITORIAL
The Politics of Memory
Debate about the legitimacy of recovered memories related to childhood
sexual abuse is intense and often angry. Some assert that such traumatic
experiences can be repressed for long periods and later recovered, either
spontaneously or via therapy. Others say the recovered memories are largely
fictitious, the product of therapeutic suggestion and the reinforcement of
popular culture. It¹s also a political struggle, pitting those who believe
that the abuse is widespread against equally adamant critics who claim that
therapists and authors exploit the issue by encouraging what they call false
memories.
In May, TF explored one aspect of this dispute in an article focusing on the
False Memory Syndrome Foundation (FMSF), which provides support to people
accused of abuse and calls attention to unethical therapy. The article
looked at the past participation of certain FMSF advisors in questionable
"mind control" projects. It also suggested that some foundation activities,
along with frequent lawsuits, have a chilling effect on the willingness of
therapists to treat real victims.
Upset by this viewpoint, Foundation Founder-Director Pamela Freyd charged
that the article was an inaccurate, McCarthy-like attack that seriously
misrepresented her organization¹s purpose. The letter of another critic,
Mark Pendergrast, who wrote a book supporting the FMSF position, was printed
in June. In this issue, we present his view more fully, in hopes of
encouraging discussion about the issues. But the criticism of our coverage
deserves further comment, as does the thrust of Pendergrast¹s article.
Among Pamela Freyd¹s concerns was our charge that former "intelligence
complex" operatives serve on the foundation¹s advisory board. We had
"grossly misrepresented the life-time work of these researchers," she wrote.
So, let¹s consider one of them - Louis Joylon West, an expert on hypnosis
and brainwashing who has excellent credentials.
The evidence is solid that West conducted research under contract with the
CIA, including LSD experiments and work on "the psychology of dissociated
states." He later attempted, unsuccessfully, to create a research center for
experiments with "psycho-technology," proposing to use youngsters from Black
and Chicano areas as primary subjects. More recently, he conducted an
experiment in which patients were taken off medication - without clear
permission - and allowed to relapse. One committed suicide; another tried to
kill his parents. Let¹s just say he¹s not the best person to cry foul about
therapeutic abuse.
While some therapists certainly make misleading suggestions to patients,
it¹s a big leap to the conclusion that most recovered memories are false. In
fact, research indicates that it¹s quite difficult to implant a memory if
nothing happened. Plus, most adults don¹t rediscover such traumas while in
therapy. Take Frank Fitzpatrick, who repressed his abuse by Father James
Porter, but later remembered without therapy or hypnosis. Porter ultimately
confessed to molesting over 50 youngsters. Clearly, many people do
experience selective amnesia - sometimes for long periods - after traumatic
experiences.
In his article, Pendergrast makes a number of assertions. No convincing
cases of massive repression have surfaced, he claims, and virtually no one
displays multiple personalities without coaching. The battle over both
"appears to be over," he concludes. Yet, several clinical surveys suggest
that some abuse victims do experience either full or partial amnesia about
abuse, and dissociative identity disorder (DID) - the current label for what
used to be called multiple personality disorder (MPD) - remains an accepted
diagnosis, backed by research and clinical experience.
Another argument made by Pendergrast and some who feel wrongly accused of
abuse is that popular culture and books such as The Courage to Heal helped
manufacture an epidemic of false memories. On the other hand, they believe
that books like The Myth of Repressed Memory simply assist people in finding
the truth. But reality may be more complex. A person who supposedly recovers
a memory of abuse, then later retracts it, must be highly suggestible, one
way or the other. But that doesn¹t mean a therapist created the memory, or
that the abuse was complete fantasy. A retraction also can be influenced by
suggestion.
Memory is obviously subjective and fallible, and some clients are wrongfully
manipulated. In such cases,

u I take back my following statement from yesterday (below). Just a
cursory look-see over the links to this Peter Kropotkin showed me
immediately he was no true academician, leastways in the sense in which I
"see" true academicians to be. I posted a bit too hasily on this...the
mention of his being a biologist threw me into a certain mind-set regarding
"true academicians".

I am basically an anarchist at heart myself, but not your GODLESS

which, again from the cursory glance at the Kropotkin links, gave me enough

However, to be fair, later on today I will read some of what is on those

Here is what I posted yesterday, which I now take back as said in haste:

Feds Sue Harvard Over Russia Plan

  By Martin Finucane
  Associated Press Writer
  Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000; 5:46 p.m. EDT

BOSTON –– The federal government sued Harvard University
and four
associates for $120 million on Tuesday, claiming that
Harvard staffers
benefited personally from a U.S.-backed program to help
post-Cold War
Russia make the transition to capitalism.

Harvard economics professor Andrei Shleifer and former
Harvard legal
expert Jonathan Hay "abused their positions as high-level
and trusted
advisers to and on behalf of the United States in Russia,"
according to the
  suit.

The government said the two men played major roles in the
Harvard
Institute for International Development in Russia, which
received $40
million in federal funds to advise Russia on
privatization, capital markets
and legal reform after the fall of the Soviet Union in
1991.

Harvard closed the institute in January.

The Justice Department said Hay and Shleifer, along with
Shleifer's wife
and a woman now married to Hay, made investments and
business deals
in Russia that were in conflict with their duties.

Among other things, the lawsuit charges that Shleifer and
his wife invested
$200,000 in Russian companies and $60,000 in Russian
government
  bonds.

"What the United States of America was bargaining was
transparency, a
  conflict-free, bias-free set of advisers," U.S. Attorney
Donald K. Stern
said. "That's what the bargain was and they failed to
produce it."

The suit seeks $120 million in damages under the False
Claims Act, which
allows plaintiffs to seek triple damages.

Through their lawyers, the four defendants denied any
improprieties.

"We are confident that, as the civil case unfolds, the
court will confirm that
the Harvard program significantly fostered Russian reform
and that the
government received its money's worth," said David Zornow,
Hay's
  lawyer.

Anne Taylor, Harvard vice president and general counsel,
said the
university upheld its end of the deal.

On July 13, 2000 the Senate passed a measure in the FY 2001 Defense
Authorization Act that if approved by the full Congress would severely
undercut the public's ability to obtain critical human rights information
gathered by U.S. defense attachés (DATT) and other U.S. military
representatives abroad.  The provision would exempt from release under the
Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) the "operational files" of the Defense
Intelligence Agency (DIA).  This would include most of the documents
produced by the Defense HUMINT Service files that have been declassified
routinely in the past and which in many cases contain crucial information
about human rights violations committed by foreign military and intelligence
units and other important information about political and military
developments around the world.
The DIA and the military services maintain a large number of military
attachés and a much smaller network of clandestine case officers to satisfy
foreign intelligence requirements.  The Defense HUMINT Service became
operational October 1, 1995, to consolidate the human intelligence (HUMINT)
capabilities of the DIA, Army, Navy, and Air Force.
The proposed section extends to the DIA the language of the CIA
Information Act of 1984, which exempted certain files in the CIA's
directorate of operations from the Freedom of Information Act on the basis
of an extensive public record, multiple hearings, and specificity as to
exactly which files would be covered.  Unlike the CIA Act, however, there
were no public hearings on the proposed DIA exemption, no debate, no
testimony, and no public record other than a misleading five-paragraph
"background paper" from the DIA.  And while the CIA had argued in 1984 that
the operational exemption would actually produce a net increase in released
material, it is clear that the application of such an exemption to the DIA
would drastically reduce the number of documents currently being released.

Congress the legislation would effectively shield the activities of foreign
death squads, torturers and kidnappers from public scrutiny and would
greatly undermine the efforts of official truth commissions many of which
have been aided by the declassification of such records to clarify
responsibility for human rights violations.  Below are examples of the kinds
of military HUMINT reports that would be exempt from release if the Senate
language is included in the final bill.  The first eleven documents
released through FOIA and special declassification projects contain
important information on human rights abuses committed by Chilean and
Guatemalan security forces.  The next set of documents cover a range of
political and military matters and are included to illustrate the broad
range of topics covered by defense intelligence operational reports.  These
records are just a small sample of the hundreds of DIA HUMINT reports that
the Archive has obtained.  There are also many more of these kinds of DIA
documents available at the State Department's Electronic Reading Room,
including dozens of additional reports about human rights violations in
Chile and Guatemala.

KARENNA GORE WEDS ANDREW SCHIFF

---

Vice President Al Gore's Jr.'s daughter Karenna Gore, was recently married
to Andrew Schiff. Andrew Schiff is a descendant of JACOB SCHIFF. Jacob
Schiff was the Jewish New York City banker and traitor to America who
financed the communist revolution in Russia in 1917.

Jacob Schiff gave $20 Million Dollars in Gold (worth Five Hundred Million,
$500,000,000.00, in 1999 dollars) to LEVI BRAUNSTEIN, also known as Trotsky,
and Vladimir Ilich Blanc Ulanyoff, also known as Lenin.

They used this money to turn Russia into a terrifying satanic anti-Christian
communist slave state. The communist revolution resulted in a bloody
holocaust of over 100 MILLION DEAD CHRISTIANS which no one seems to want to
remember or talk about.

Hollywood has never made one movie about this Christian Holocaust. Why? If
you want to know more about the history of the communist take over or
Russian and the millions who were slaughtered, I urge you to purchase
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's book THE GULAG ARCHIPELAGO.

Vice President Al Gore Jr. is the son of former United States Senator Al
Gore Sr, whose major benefactor was Armand Heimer [aka Hammer], who in turn
was the son of Dr. Julius Heimer [aka Hammer], founder of the American
Communist Party. See article below for more information on the Red Communist
sympathizer Armand Hammer.

To this day Al Gore Jr. presents the "prestigious" HAMMER award for
Government Efficiency.

See http://TeamInfinity.com/~ralph/gore for details on Gore's strong
Communist background and relationships with Chernomyrdin and Gore's family's
ties with Hammer and Lenin, and even Stalin.

AL GORE THEME: "IF I HAD A HAMMER"
--
F.R. Duplantier - Excerpted from http://teaminfinity.com/~ralph/gore/

If Al Gore Jr. ever runs for President, he'll have to answer some
embarrassing questions about the source of his family's wealth.
"One of the minor mysteries of American politics has been the
source of wealth for the family of Vice President Albert Gore Jr.,"
observes Joseph Goulden of Accuracy in Media. "When Gore's father
was first elected to the House of Representatives in the late
1930s," Goulden continues, "he was an impecunious Tennessee school
teacher who eked out extra dollars by playing fiddle at church
weddings. But later, as a United States Senator, he lived in the
plush Fairfax Hotel on Embassy Row in Washington, and sent his son,
Al Jr., to the pricey St. Albans School, the haunt of kids from
Social Register families."

In a recent issue of the Washington Inquirer, Goulden summarizes
the contents of a new book called Dossier, written by investigative
reporter Edward Jay Epstein, which "shows that the senior Gore had
a silent partner who for several decades insured that his pockets
remained comfortably filled. He was Armand Hammer, the multi-
millionaire businessman and oil promoter who apparently collected
art and politicians with equal zeal." Goulden notes that Al Gore
Sr. was "Hammer's designated door-opener in official Washington."
The handsome compensation that Gore Sr. received for his services
culminated in a half-a-million-dollars-a-year position with Armand
Hammer's oil company, Occidental Petroleum. Al Gore Jr. picked up
where his father left off and "put the family's Senate seat at
Hammer's service."

Goulden describes Armand Hammer as "one of the odder, more odious
characters of American business and politics, 'famous' chiefly
because he was rich enough to promote his mammoth ego." He notes
that Hammer's carefully and expensively crafted public persona was
"that of a renegade oilman who made billions from Libyan oil,
chummed around with politicians up to White House level, and
adorned acres of galleries with paintings, some priceless, some
fakes. Hammer's lawyers bedeviled honest journalists who tried to
write otherwise."

Hammer's powerful influence on Al Gore Sr. and Jr. would have been
bad enough had he been nothing more than an unscrupulous
businessman. Like his father Julius, however, he was a lifelong
Communist and a friend of the Soviet Union. "Some scattered hints
that Hammer's ties with the USSR went beyond business friendship

Ex-Peruvian Spy Chief Arranges Photo

"Okay all you Panamanian babes, this is me."

PANAMA CITY, Panama (AP) -- Panamanians caught their first glimpse of
ex-Peruvian spy chief Vladimiro Montesinos on Thursday -- in a posed
photograph giving no hint of where he is hiding while awaiting a decision on
his political asylum request.

Foreign Minister Jose Miguel Aleman, told reporters Thursday that Panama's
decision on Montesinos will be made only in the interest of ''contributing to
a peaceful end to the Peruvian crisis.''

Montesinos, who fled Peru after a videotape showed him allegedly bribing a
Peruvian lawmaker, arrived in Panama on Sunday. The scandal over the video
prompted Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori to call early elections in which
he will not be a candidate.

The photograph, published on the front page of the daily newspaper El Panama
America, showed Montesinos seated and appearing to read a book. Beside him is
a small white table holding a glass of water and a vase of tropical flowers.

''It's not spontaneous; he posed,'' said the newspaper's news editor, Octavio
Amat. He said Montesinos agreed to one photograph on condition that he
choreograph the shot and that the newspaper promise not to tell where it was
taken.

''They allowed us to send one of our people, but only under strict
security,'' Amat said.

Seven people who accompanied Montesinos to Panama, including a Peruvian
general, were kicked out of the country on Tuesday after government officials
said they had illegally entered on tourist visas.

Montesinos' asking for political asylum provoked a furor in Panama, which has
a history of providing refuge to deposed Latin American strongmen.

Panamanians who want to clean up the country's reputation oppose granting
Motesinos asylum, as do opposition Peruvian lawmakers who want to see him
prosecuted in Peru.

President Mireya Moscoso has come under strong pressure from the Organization
of American States and regional heads of state to accept Montesinos,
especially after reports that his supporters in Peru might stage a coup if he
were rejected.

Moscoso has said that while she considers the asylum request, Montesinos
could stay in Panama under a visa granted by a previous Panamanian president.

''It is a very hard decision to make,'' Aleman, the foreign minister, said
before leaving for a summit of Central American leaders in Guatemala. ''It
will be a hemispheric gesture that attempts to contribute to a peaceful end
to the Peruvian crisis.''

Conservative Group Lobbies for U.S. Mail Snooping
posted by cicero on Thursday September 28, @12:43AM
from the guess-we-know-what-their-priorities-are dept.

The conservative group Americans for Tax Reform is lobbying to
expand federal snooping of the U.S. mail. ATR Vice President Michael
Kamburowski this week dashed off a letter to Capitol Hill complaining
that the "U.S. Customs Service has been prevented from inspecting all
outbound mail sent through the U.S. Postal Service," and urging that
legislators support a new bill that would expand government
surveillance of letters and packages. The justification: Shipments of
illegal drugs. Kamburowski even quoted from a popular marijuana seed
web site, which advises customers to avoid "UPS, Federal Express, or
any other overnight express service" and use the post office instead.
The bill was introduced this week by Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-AL). It's
an odd stance for ATR, a group headed by Republican Party icon Grover
Norquist, to take -- they've been staunch advocates of
privacy-protecting encryption products in the past and ostensibly
oppose intrusive government. Guess fighting that ol'War on Drugs is
just more important. (See below for ATR's email messages.)

[CTRL] NASA possibly broke using money from Military now. RUMOR ONLY

2000-09-29 Thread Amelia

This is an unsubstantiated rumor only. I will
ask around the Huntsville AL area and see if there have been lay-offs from work,
people with NASA moving away, etc. This is where the Space Camp, Museum
and propulsion laboratory, etc. for NASA are located.

Subject: NASA possibly broke using money from Military now. FACT
SHEET!

all I have on this is that Russia is using NASA for
its goals to put the new space station up there making NASA broke in the
meantime.

not I'm told that NASA is getting emergency money
from the Pentagon in order to survive.that is all I know for
now.

the arrangement with NASA and Russia will possibly
end leaving NASA without a Federal Reserve Note.

one more item, NASA, like the military is
cannibalizing parts on the shuttle fleet so bad that it critical to come up with
a tracking plan to see where those parts on the shuttle are going. this
new tracking program will allow NASA to monitor people as well..monitor
people in NASA's program, contractors and "ALL!"

All of us in the U.S. and globally?

the second tier structure has been the importing of
Europeans from the European Space Agency into Clear Lake City a suburb of
Houston where most of the people of NASA work and live. these second tier
employees are in the position to take over and run NASA if the Americans in the
top tier jobs were to suddenly disappear?

another complaint is that too many Russians are
working and living and running shuttle operations (this from several NASA
employees I have talked to).

Bolivia's Banzer Convenes Military to Stop Protests

All Eyes Are On Perú but It's Bolivia that Is On the Verge

Peasant Protesters Vow to Meet Repression "Bullet for Bullet"

The Drug War Wrecks Democracy Again

 A Narco News Global Alert

For the first time in 18 years, Bolivian President Hugo Banzer has convened
his high military council to plot the repression of a wave of citizen protest
that engulfs that South American country.

Bolivia's "democracy," always as fragile and in quotations as that of Perú,
is on the verge of regressing back to the bad old days of military rule and
repression.

As a Narco News advisor pointed out to us: "Why am I suddenly reading the
name of Perú spy chief Montesinos everywhere when during all the press
coverage of the Spring elections he was barely mentioned?" Good question.
Narco News offers the following answer: Washington is stage-managing a huge
media circus around Montesinos and his jet-hopping from Peru to Panamá to
distract from behind-the-scenes maneuvers throughout América.

The total failure in the first weeks of the $1.3 billion dollar "Plan
Colombia" military intervention is one of the stories that Washington wants
to supress. As Congressional Democrats who were key in constructing the plan
send messages that they might back away from it after the November elections,
the US Ambassador to Colombia yesterday signed contracts with that government
that commits the US funding into next year, stripping the next Congress from
any power to stop the dollar hemorrhage. Not a mention of this in the
English-language press; everyone is chasing Montesinos and Fujimori, who is
flying to Washington, DC for instructions as we write.

The Perú-Panamá-Montesinos circus has pushed more than the fracasing Plan
Colombia off the media docket. It has eclipsed the coming crisis in Bolivia,
where the US has staked its South American gamble with a $4.5 billion dollar
"Plan Bolivia" in exchange for Banzer's military cooperation with Plan
Colombia and the fracasing war on drugs.

The Pentagon needs Bolivia to escalate the Colombian war. Specifically, it
needs airfields. $4.5 billion dollars worth of airfields!

The US airbases in Manta, Ecuador, and San Salvador, El Salvador, are under
increasing scrutiny and regulation by the congresses and opposition parties
of those countries. Previous plans to use airfields in Chile to launch
Colombia-bound warplanes went up in smoke with the election of former Allende
minister Ricardo Lagos as President early this year. Madeleine Albright's
recent negotiation with Argentina to use airfields there (under the euphemism
of "logisticial support" for Plan Colombia) fell apart after one week:
Brazil, Chile (and Europe?) made certain of that. From Venezuela the gallop
of Bolívar's horse grows louder; a horsepower fueled by oil and the
resurrection of OPEC and Venezuelan democracy together.

The US military in South America increasingly resembles a homeless juvenile
delinquent in the streets, armed with knives but not common sense, that
belongs in reform school before he kills again. Not the Pentagon's School of
the Americas (where Montesinos and at least one of the generals accompanying
him to Panamá learned their terrorist skills), but, rather, the school of
democracy, sovereignty and human rights in which the US State Department, the
CIA, the DEA, and other agencies have failed every course.

Just as Washington made its move on Banzer's Bolivia, the Bolivian people
have risen up. A majority of the states in that nation are paralyzed from
peasant blockades. What provoked them: The War on Drugs. The teachers of the
nation are on strike: the students are busy anyway, fighting for their
country and against their government. The Bolivian State has thrown the
leader of the Teachers Union in jail, but the strike marches on. Washington
has underestimated the rising conscience of Bolívar's América. Did they
expect the Bolivian people to go along quietly with the New Colonial Plan?

These times call for better analysis by authentic journalists and Civil
Society. Don't be distracted by the hype. Washington is managing both
Fujimori and his "opposition" in Perú, and still is losing its grip. That's
because the events in Perú are shaped

[CTRL] more slaves in the world today than at any time in history

2000-09-29 Thread J Taylor

 THE GUARDIAN
 Children in chains
There are more slaves in the world today than at any time in history. And
tonight, a shocking new documentary reveals the sheer scale of the
horror.
Mark
Morris talked to the film-makers about their fight to reveal the truth

 Mark Morris
 Guardian

 Thursday September 28, 2000

Brian Woods has a single statistic to explain why people should watch
Slavery
(tonight, Channel 4). "I don't think that anyone who is told that there
is
more
slavery on earth today than there has been in human history can fail to
be
astonished and appalled by the fact." Sure, there is a flip response
available
to the terminally cynical: since there are many more people alive now
than
there have been, there are more people than ever in most categories. But
that
kind of answer crumbles when you see the film.

[CTRL] Soros demands more help for the beleaguered euro

2000-09-29 Thread J Taylor

-Caveat Lector-

- he almost single handedly caused the eruption of the South east asian
regional countries.
No wonder he wants to see the euro propped up as he can then speculate
against it and make zillions more.

Sunday Telegraph
ISSUE 1948 Sunday 24 September 2000

Soros demands more help for the beleaguered euro
By Richard Fletcher

GEORGE SOROS, the international financier who forced Britain out of
the exchange rate mechanism in 1992, yesterday called for further
financial intervention from the world's leading central banks to protect
the sinking euro.
Soros was speaking on the fringes of the International Monetary Fund and
World Bank meetings in Prague where finance ministers and central
bankers are meeting this weekend to discuss worries over world oil
prices and assess the climate in currency markets.

The meeting follows last Friday's massive moves by the US Federal
Reserve and other central banks to defend the euro. Soros said more
action is needed to have any lasting effect. Soros said: "This
intervention by itself is not enough to turn the market."

The central banks of Canada, Britain, France, Italy, Japan and the US
spent between $5bn and $8bn propping up the battered euro on Friday. The
intervention came just one week before a referendum in Denmark on
whether the country should join European Monetary Union.

[Ed: Why aren't we told exact figures? - nor who actually finances this -
the banks or the tax-payers].

Soros, renowned for his speculation in the currency markets during the
1990's praised the intervention. He said: "It was a much needed move and
it was very well done because it caught the market by surprise. I think
it will be successful. All the preconditions for success are there."

[Ed: Success for who?]

Soros argued that the official aim should be to get the euro up to $0.90
which he said "was a sound and defensible level". The single European
currency briefly rose above $0.90 on Friday after the intervention took
the market by surprise but it had retreated to $0.877 by the time the US
markets closed.

Meanwhile a spokeswoman for the German finance ministry claimed that the
seven finance ministers had reached an interim deal on how to react to
the recent sharp rise in crude oil prices. She said: "It was agreed that
tax cuts are not the right way to react to oil prices, rather that on
the one hand oil producing states must be urged to increase productive
capacity and on the other hand to arrive at a more efficient use of
energy."

Yesterday Gerhard Schröder, the German chancellor, announced a boost in
tax deductions for commuters hit by the higher cost of petrol and
compensation payments for the less well-off, to help with the rise in
heating oil prices.

[CTRL] [20] Treason's Peace

2000-09-29 Thread Kris Millegan

-Caveat Lector-

an excerpt from:
Treason's Peace
Howard Watson Armbruster©1947
A Crossroads Press Book
Beechurst Press
New York
438 pps. -- First/Only Edition -- Out-of Print
-
--On July 5, 1945, under instructions contained in J. C. S. 1067, the U.S.
Military Government in Germany (O.M.G.U.S.) promulgated General Order No. 2,
which directed seizure of Farben for the purpose of making its plants
available for reparations, and for destruction of all Farben arms or
munitions of war or of any ingredients for same, which are not generally used
in industries permitted in Germany.

Special Order No. 1, of the same date, appointed a control office for Farben
to prevent the production by and rehabilitation of these plants except as
might be specifically determined in accordance with objectives of United
States.

However, within a few weeks of the promulgation of this order Brigadier
General William H. Draper, formerly of the New York banking house of Dillon,
Read Co. (which floated the thirty million dollar bond issue of Vereinigte
Stahlwerke, Fritz Thyssen's Steel Trust, in the United States) was reported
in a published dispatch from Berlin to have declared that a considerable
portion of Germany"s pre-war industry must remain if Germany was to survive.
General Draper was chief adviser to General Eisenhower on German industry.

This apparent defiance of official military orders appeared strange, but no
more so than the address delivered by the Honorable John J. McCloy before the
Academy of Political Science in New York City on November 8th. Mr. McCloy,
who bad just resigned as Assistant Secretary of War, argued that Germany
could never be made into an exclusively agricultural or pastoral society. He
belittled the capacity of the enemy's remaining industrial plants and
indicated that their plants should be put to work as soon as possible to pay
for food that was to be imported. Concluded Mr. McCloy, "For a long time to
come there is no justifiable fear that Germany's war potential is being
rebuilt."

The Assistant Secretary of War, until 1940, was a member of the law firm of
Cravath, de Gersdorff, Swaine Wood, which firm as mentioned in earlier
Chapters had been representing I.G. Farben or its affiliates in the United
States. It may appear to be a coincidence that Mr. McCloy should have turned
up in the War Department in 1941, in a position in which he could speak with
authority on such matters as handling the destruction of that mainstay of
Germany's war potential—I.G. Farben. The coincidence may also be recorded
here that other members of the Cravath law firm also held responsible places
in the War Department, including Alfred McCormack, and Howard C. Peterson, as
assistants to the Secretary. Another former member of this firm, Col. Richard
A. Wilmer, was commissioned after the war began and had to do with such
problems.---

CHAPTER XX

Plans for Peace-In Time of War

I. G. FARBEN, unlike the governments and the armies of Germany, never
surrenders and never dies. Win, lose, or draw, the pattern of Farben goes on.
When the first World War ended, Farben turned abruptly from the production of
munitions no longer needed by a defeated army to rebuilding its international
framework in preparation for the next attempt at world conquest. Again, this
tenacity of purpose and flexibility of pattern are clearly discernible in the
events which developed so speedily in those hectic weeks following the
surrender of Germany on May 6, 1945.

An important phase of this pattern of eternal life and perpetual war is found
in numerous carry-over agreements or understandings already referred to
between Farben and certain of its affiliates in the United States, all of
which provided for, or promised, resumption of pre-war arrangements when the
war should end.

Aside from written agreements are the verbal understandings such as that
described in Chapter II in the 1914 letter from the German Hoechst to Herman
Metz:

Our entire relationship is really a confidential relationship and it will be
and must, without agreements, so continue in the future as in the past.

A similar relationship may be observed in a report of the duPont Foreign
Relations Department, dated February 9, 1940, in which reference was made to
various current agreements with Farben relating to nylon and plastics, and to
an arrangement made to return to Farben certain funds advanced to purchase
shares in Duperial, the duPont-I. C. I. dye subsidiary in South America. The
British I. C. I. had objected to Farben's purchase of the shares, so duPont
was arranging to repay the money. The report went on to say:

The duPont Company Wormed I.G.. that they intended to use their good offices
after the war to have the I.G. participation (in Duperial) restored.

Senator Bone was indignant at this and other evidence of an intended
resumption of "business as usual" with Farben after the war. Said the Senator:

Everything that has been revealed so faron the

IMF Meeting Closes Early

By HANS GREIMEL, The Associated Press

PRAGUE, Czech Republic (Sept 27) - The weary captains of global capitalism
said Wednesday they were finishing the annual summit of the IMF and World
Bank one day early, but insisted their business was done and they had not
been derailed by violent street protests.

Bank officials were reading final statements early Wednesday evening, saying
their only business Thursday, the original closing day, would be to hold a
news conference.

''They moved more quickly than anticipated - they finished ahead of time,''
said David Hawley, a spokesman for the International Monetary Fund. ''It has
nothing to do with the protests.''

The mood Wednesday morning had been decidedly glum, but Hawley said the
finance officials had not canceled any speeches or meetings before they got
to the close.

Delegates had filed past metal barriers and thousands of police, with some
worried for their safety in the wake of raging street riots the day before
that trashed the city center.

Martin G. Dlamini, central bank governor from Swaziland, said he had canceled
a business meeting outside the massive convention center because he was told
by authorities it was not safe.

''Whether these protesters will attack us - they may,'' Dlamini said. ''We
from less developed countries understand some of the issues being raised. But
this does not give us strength.''

Still, like many of the 14,000 other delegates at the joint annual meeting of
the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, Dlamini hoped to use day two
for tackling issues of debt relief and the war on poverty.

Trouble in the streets broke out again early Wednesday when dozens of people
scuffled with police outside a hotel where IMF and World Bank delegates were
staying. Authorities quickly pushed the angry crowd away from the building,
and police spokesman Jiri Suttner said about 100 activists were detained -
raising the overall number of detentions to more than 500.

Later, about 300 or 400 protesters began marching from a town square toward
the police station, but were stopped by anti-riot police. The activists
retreated to a town square, where they began cheering when they heard the
meetings were closing early.

Protest leaders said they were caught off guard by the end of the meeting,
but were quick to try to claim credit.

''If that is true I am really excited about it - that would be a real
success,'' said Cyanne Loyle with the Initiative Against Economic
Globalization, which had organized the mass demonstrations Tuesday intended
to echo those at financial meetings in Seattle and Washington.

Street protests raged a day earlier, with activists throwing Molotov
cocktails and rocks at riot police, who responded with tear gas and water
cannons. The fighting left more than 70 people injured, including 55 police
officers.

Police said Wednesday they believed 12,000 protesters had been on hand, far
more than the estimate of 5,000 they used Tuesday.

Top IMF and World Bank officials insisted the demonstrators had it all wrong
- that the agencies are not the enemies of the world's 2.8 billion poor but
the biggest lenders to poor countries needing cash infusions.

Representatives from the 182 assembled nations tried to give their own spin
on the protests, saying images of hooded anarchists hurling rocks at
black-clad riot police did not taint the image of the Washington-based
lending groups.

That's despite the fact that turmoil trails their meetings, with
anti-globalization activists wreaking

released from jail:

· Women have been strip searched by male officers and have been forced to
perform physical exercises for their enjoyment

· Many individuals are being denied water, food, and sleep; some are able to
get food only if they pay guards, women and fascists are more likely to get
water

· Many people released have reported that before reaching police stations,
officers took individuals to isolated areas and beat them severely.

· Two Norwegians that went to a police station on Prisparni Street near
Vlatavska to report a stolen mobile phone witnessed behind briefly opened
doors that a number of people were handcuffed to the wall and being beaten
severely. This has also been confirmed by many reports from released persons
that in the processing rooms groups of 40 to 60 people were asked to spread
eagle while they were beaten, heads were knocked back, legs were kicked in,
and
numbers of men had their groins twisted or punched. Additionally people
handcuffed were tossed down stairs.

· There is one report that 22 people were crammed into a 4 square meter
cell.

· 30 People were detained at the Olsanska jail in an outdoor courtyard
overnight with no blankets or food. They were later moved to Balkova near
Pilsen.

· Two Germans that were detained in Lupacova, Praha 3 on Wednesday for
approximately eight hours were held with an Israeli, an American, a German,
and an Italian. The Israeli had been beaten severely, had difficulty
walking, a black eye, and likely had a broken rib. He has been denied
medical attention

· People with diabetes were not fed, people that needed medication were not
given it, the British Embassy had to intervene to get medication into the
jail.

· A Norwegian woman held in jail with 30 other women witnessed a German
woman with a badly injured leg where medics were denied.

· Right to legal representation and advice, right to interpreters, right to
food and water, right to basic medical attention, and the right to a phone
call have all been ignored on a widespread
scale.

· Czechs and Israelis are being beaten more drastically and are being
detained longer

· Many internationals are being moved from local stations to Balkova near
Pilsen which has one of the worst

-Caveat Lector-

Twas a night in late August, and all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The front door was locked, and the deadbolt was thrown,
All was safe and secure, in our castle of stone.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Pokemon, danced in their heads.
And mom in her t-shirt, and me in my flannel,
Were watching intently, Discovery channel.

When out on the lawn, there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window, I flew like a flash,
I fumbled as always, the vinyl-clad sash.

The moonlight was faint on my manicured lawn,
As I peered through the gloom, and I stifled a yawn.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a vanload of men in full military gear.

The young ninja-clad driver was lively, and quick.
He stepped out on the curb, with his door-bashing stick.
With the speed of a cobra, his agents, they came,
As he whistled and shouted, and called them by name.

Now Chalmers and Davidson, you take the back,
And when I give the signal, commence the attack.
To the top of the porch men, stay close to the wall,
Now BASH away! BASH away! BASH away all!

And then they gained entry, a matter of course.
The doorframe was splintered and shattered by force.
Then up to the housetop, his agents they flew,
In the steady advance, of a well-practiced crew.

And soon I heard men at the top of the stair,
That's when my thoughts turned to the kids sleeping there.
So I turned and jumped over my bed in a bound,
As the door was crashed in, I heard "down on the ground".

He was dressed all in black from his head to his toe.
And he wore a broad mask, so his face didn't show.
Then he lined up the sights of the gun he possessed,
Which was clearly a chore in that black armored vest.

His eyes-how they twinkled, that's all I could tell,
Of the person who faced me and issued a yell.
"To the ground" he repeated, with hasty precision,
And the bead he had drawn, didn't leave for decision.

So silently raging, to carpet I fell,
From my wife there was issued a terrified yell.
While they tore up my bedroom, and left it a wreck,
And I scarcely could breathe for the boot on my neck.

From afar in the house I could hear their ransacking,
And as meek as a church mouse a "Daddy, what's happening".
And with that still small voice, and his cry of alarm,
I resolved a great price, should they bring him to harm.

It was then that they read from the warrant they held,
And I struggled to listen, I broke free and yelled.
You idiot bastards, the problem is plain,
This is Worthington Terrace, not Worthington Lane.

Well he spoke not a word, but reviewed paperwork.
Then he looked at his underling, called him a jerk.
And then quick as he came, his accomplices rose,
"My mistake", were his words "didn't mean to impose".

Then he sprang to his van, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew, like the down from a thistle.
And I heard him exclaim as the drove out of sight,
"Good thing no one was hurt, and to all a good night".

Nine Days to Lieberman's Kol Nidrei Rite on Yom Kippur Eve

Coeur d'Alene, Idaho (Sept. 29, hoffman-info.com.news.html). The clock is
ticking on the countdown to the Kol Nidrei rite, which Joe Lieberman, the
Democrat candidate for the Vice Presidency of the US, will perform in just a
few days.

Yesterday we mailed a press release to major and minor media all over the
US, from the NY Times and CBS News to talk radio hosts and local newspapers.
The press release is packaged inside an envelope with a photo of Lieberman
in his kippah ("yarmulke") and the banner headline, "Lieberman's Strange
Gods" (those of you living in the US who have purchased anything from us or
made a donation, will also receive this mailing).

Inevitably the media describe Yom Kippur in hues of deepest piety and kid
gloves' reverence, as a "penitential rite" during which saintly Jews
approach their Maker and beg his forgiveness for wrongs committed in the
past.

Rubbish! Judaism is a crime syndicate disguised as a religion. The gangsters
must protect themselves from the bad seed they will sow in the coming year.
To do so they cut a lawyer's deal with their god (in actuality, the rabbis
and the Talmud), that allows them to believe they can lie with impunity and
not reap what they sow.

The fact that Lieberman will engage in this rite on the evening of Oct. 8 is
frankly outrageous. He and his handlers can only get away with this if Kol
Nidrei is falsified, usually by the media's claim that the absolution being
sought is for promises broken in the past.

To counter this disinformation I refer you to documentary evidence --
Babylonian Talmud Tractate Nedarim 23a and 23b: "And he who desires that
none of his vows made during the year shall be valid, let him stand at the
beginning of the year and declare, 'Every vow which I make in the future
shall be null." (Quoted in "Judaism's Strange Gods" by Michael A. Hoffman
II, p. 61).

I am continually researching this subject and I now have two folders thick
with additional revelations not in my book's first edition. Much of this
later data appear in the two speeches I gave at the America's Promise
Ministries Conference Sept. 16 and Sept. 17 (see the end of this message).

Since I wrote the book, I wanted to overcome the objection that while the
Talmud may decree the nullification of all oaths, how can it be proved that
this is exactly what transpires in the Orthodox Jewish synagogue ritual
itself? (I qualify this with the word Orthodox because the Reform synagogue
does use the Talmudic Kol Nidrei rite, but then of course Sen. Lieberman
attends an Orthodox synagogue which does use it, as all Orthodox synagogues
do).

I have had a number of secondary sources in my files attesting to the
existence of Kol Nidrei in the Yom Kippur liturgy, but I did not have
primary documentation, until now. I have since unearthed the actual
liturgical rite itself from the synagogue "prayer book," and posted it in
the original Hebrew at http://www.hoffman-info.com/news.html

So, we have the decree from the Talmud in Nedarim 23 and now we have the
actual text from the synagogue rite which Joe Lieberman will mumble along
with his fellow racketeers on Sunday evening, Oct. 8:

Translation of the actual synagogue text:

"All vows, prohibitions, oaths, consecrations or equivalent terms that we
may vow, swear, consecrate, or prohibit upon ourselves from this Yom Kippur
until the next Yom Kippur, may it come upon us for good - regarding them
all, we repudiate them henceforth. They all will be abandoned, cancelled,
null and void; they will be without power and without standing. Our vows
shall not be valid vows; our prohibitions shall not be valid prohibitions;
and our oaths shall not be valid oaths."

Now here's the clincher: we have from today until Oct. 8 to take this
information and hector the media, the clergy, the professors and the
Democrats (and even revisionist publications and allies who thus far have
been silent).

Keep the message pithy and brutally direct. Ask a simple question which only
Michael A. Hoffman II has thus far dared to ask, and the media --including
the kosher-conservative media -- refuse to ask:

How can a man who performs the Kol Nidrei rite and recites the words of the
preceding text - invalidating all the oaths he will make in the coming year
-- be trusted to uphold the oath he will make to the Constitution should he
be elected Vice-President of the US?

Death toll rises to five, 30 injured
as roadblocks and violent protests continue

By PETER McFARREN
Associated Press Writer

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) _ Violent protests by coca-leaf farmers
demanding an end to an anti-drug campaign raged throughout Bolivia,
leaving five people dead. Roadblocks set up by the farmers have
paralyzed commerce and cost the economy 50 million dollars, the
government said.

The rising tide of protest has highlighted an array of demands,
including calls for the resignation of President Hugo Banzer, land
reforms, and compensation for coca-leaf farmers or investment in
new agricultural crops.

Evo Morales, the head of the coca-leaf farmers organization in
the Chapare region in Bolivia's tropical heartland, said
negotiations with the government broke down Monday night, and
declared, ``Banzer would do us a great favor by resigning.''

``Coca is a question of life or death,'' Morales said. Coca leaf
is the farmers' key cash crop, and is the base ingredient to make
cocaine.

Only 2,000 hectares (4,940 acres) of coca leaf remain in the
Chapare, 5 percent of what existed four years ago. Banzer says
Bolivia will no longer be producing cocaine by the end of the year.

Protest leaders in Cochabamba, Bolivia's third largest city,
demanded Banzer's resignation Monday as at least 15,000 protesters
rallied in the main square. The demonstration was broken up by
soldiers and police using tear gas.

The minister of the Presidency, Walter Guiteras, rejected the
resignation demands and said, ``If Banzer leaves, so does democracy
-- those are the rules of the game.''

As anger spread, the umbrella group of community organizations
called the La Paz Civic Committee announced the capital would be
hit by a general strike on Wednesday. Their central issue was a
demand that foreign investors be barred from buying into the
national telephone system.

Two deaths and 30 injuries among protesters occurred Sunday on
the road between La Paz and Cochabamba and a third death in Guaqui,
a town on the border with Peru, on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

An agronomist was killed Monday by a rock thrown by farmers on
the road linking La Paz with the Yungas and Beni tropical regions
of the country, and a coca farmer in Yungas was killed.

The road blocks are already resulting in food shortages in most
major cities and will become acute by the weekend.

On another front, government said that three-fourths of the
public school teachers, who are on a general strike and failed to
show up for work Monday, will be fired.

The government says it will suspend classes for the year if the
strike does not end by Wednesday.

Losses related to the roadblocks are estimated at dlrs 50
million, the government says, aggravating an economic recession.

Farmers on the Bolivian highlands continued blocking access
roads to La Paz, Chile and Peru. Soldiers were only able to
temporarily lift roadblocks.

Farmers on the highlands are demanding that the government
reconsider a new water law that congress was debating, changes in
agrarian reform laws and an end to coca leaf eradication. They do
not grow coca, but most of them chew the leaves as a stimulant.

DOING HARM: RESEARCH ON THE MENTALLY ILL
Testing takes human toll
By Robert Whitaker, Globe Correspondent and Dolores Kong, Globe Staff,
11/15/98

PORTRAIT ARTIST SHALMAH PRINCE painted "Second Coming" - meant to depict
hope in the midst of chaos - after her harrowing experience in a research
experiment.
First of four parts
The light flickered on for Shalmah Prince one day in 1994.
Sitting in a doctor's office, she spotted an article in U.S. News World
Report on human radiation experiments conducted in the 1950s. Her mind, she
said, raced back to a wrenching experience from her past.
She had been in an experiment of some type. Had she too been used?
Prince, a portrait artist who suffers from manic depression, also known as
bipolar disorder, dug into her medical history and documented a chilling
story.
In 1983, she had been in an experiment in which investigators withdrew her
medication, did nothing to intervene as she became increasingly manic, and
then injected her with apomorphine, a chemical that other researchers had
tested to see if it could provoke psychosis.
Prince became so delusional that she had to be placed in leather restraints,
a descent into madness that didn't fully subside for 10 days.
''I was never the same person again,'' Prince said. ''My perception of
myself and who I was completely changed. I had a sense of shame and
embarrassment. Who would have ever thought that doctors would create
psychosis like that?''
Prince's story provides a window into a troubling corner of psychiatric
research that continues to this day. She is one of more than 2,000 mentally
ill patients who over the past 25 years have been ushered into a disturbing
series of experiments by psychiatric researchers exploring the biology of
psychosis.
In their published accounts, doctors have told of injecting mentally ill
patients with drugs designed to exacerbate their delusions and
hallucinations. In prestigious journals, they have described studies in
which they withheld effective antipsychotic medication from desperate
patients who stumbled into hospital emergency rooms. In precise, clinical
terms, they have reported how they deliberately stopped giving medication to
stabilized schizophrenic patients to see how quickly they became sick again.
These studies were designed to gain knowledge that might lead to improved
treatments for schizophrenia and related illnesses. But the experiments
offered no possibility of therapeutic benefit to the subjects and exposed
them to some measure of psychic pain and risk of long-term harm.
Moreover, this controversial line of experimentation has been marked by
repeated instances in which researchers failed to fully disclose the risks
to the mentally ill patients and obscured their true purposes.
Those are the very themes of the story Shalmah Prince pieced together:
On Jan. 14, 1983, fearing the onset of a manic episode despite the lithium
she had been taking for two years, Prince went to University Hospital in
Cincinnati seeking help. Her medical records show that she arrived
well-groomed, in control of her emotions, and thinking fairly clearly.
Standard procedure would have been to test the lithium level in her blood
and adjust the dosage, but that's not what happened.
Prince signed a consent form that said she was agreeing to take part in a
study designed to ''clearly diagnose her illness.'' In their research
protocol, however, the psychiatrists said the purpose of the study was to
explore ''schizophrenia subtypes,'' based on the patients' response to
apomorphine. The consent form didn't mention any risks associated with
stopping the medication, even though Dr. David Garver, who ran the study,
later acknowledged in a sworn deposition that without medication, the
research subjects might ''have a delusion that they were capable of flying,
leap out a window, [and] injure themselves.''
''They assured me they were there to treat me,'' Prince recalled. ''And I
just wanted to be kept safe. I knew that I didn't have insurance and that I
was extremely vulnerable. I needed help and a regular doctor was $150. So I
was really stuck.''
Without her lithium, Prince quickly deteriorated. By the fourth day she was
wildly manic, yelling and threatening suicide. She also ''got in the face''
of another patient, she

THE DEATH IN ARIZONA OF THE KEMPER MARLEY MACHINE

by Brian Downing Quig
MONETARY AND ECONOMIC REVIEW

source: http://www.dcia.com/

Kemper Marley was Arizona's first and only billionaire
at the time of the Bolles murder.

I expected the sky to fall after my July article linking the activities of
Charles Keating and General Singlaub. Nothing happened. The reaction to my
September article exposing Terry Burke, former top DEA in Arizona as a
possible key element in the illegal narcotics network in Arizona, however,
was immediate and unmistakable. Within days of my FAXing this story I was
served with a court summons, a nasty death threat was left on my answering
machine and my offices were entered, my files, book cases and furniture
dumped and overturned.

The last few days there has been a 6 foot 6 inch Latino following myself and
an associate. He makes the top hit man for the Medellin cartel look like a
sissy. Since Terry Burke, the former CIA station chief in Laos who
administered the Phoenix Assassination Program has been closely associated
with Theodore Shackley since 1962, this revelation coming in the wake of the
unsolved Buddhist murders must have sent shock waves far and wide. Ted
Shackley was George Bush's number 2 man at CIA when Bush was CIA Director.
Among those in the know, Ted Shackley and an operative named Richard Armitage
are the weakest points in the armor of George Bush and the New World Order.

More significantly, I am tempted to speculate that this revelation, coupled
with my suggestion of a probable heroin connection to the military style
execution of the 9 Buddhist monks, lead to the panic arrest of five innocent
Tucson kids for the murder of the monks. Supposedly, on the basis of a tip
received Sept. 3 from a patient in a mental hospital, the deputies of
Maricopa County Sheriff, Tom Agnos, arrested and charged four hispanic and
one black youth, all selected from the poorest neighborhoods of Tucson. It
was apparent from the start that this action was bogus.

First, law enforcement alleged that these youths stole a late model Bronco
and a Blazer that were seen at the Temple the day of the crime. These
vehicles were never reported stolen! Where are these vehicles today? If these
kids were in fact criminal elements, wouldn't they have driven these four
wheeled all terrain vehicles across the border to Mexico where they would
have been worth more than in the U.S.? They could have made a quick $15,000
doing this. I visited the Temple. It is more than obvious that there was
nothing of value there.

Rapidly the case against the kids began disintegrating. One suspect was
working at a dog track during the murders and was video taped performing his
duties. He had to be released. It soon became clear that there was no
physical evidence linking the youths to the crime --- only their confessions
confessions that the Dean of the Law School at ASU says can not be used
in court because they were so obviously coerced. It turns out that the
deputies worked on the youths for 12 hours in separate rooms with no windows
--- no food or water --- in the midst of serious threats.

One youth was told that he would be "found in a lake with an anchor wrapped
around his neck if he did not cooperate". This precess took place not at
police headquarters but in separate rooms of a hotel. The attorney for Dante
Parker, said to be the ringleader, has submitted a list of 25 witnesses that
say the suspect never left Tucson the night in question.

The Thai ambassador "just happened to be in Phoenix" for the arrests. During
one short sound byte he repeated three times that his being in Phoenix was
just coincidence. His praise for Arizona law enforcement sounded a bit too
lavish for the circumstances. All readers can be assured that the smiling
Thai ambassador is no stranger to the politics of heroin in Southeast Asia.
Equally as disingenuous was the statement of the Sheriff that there was no
racism involved in the crime (but only in the selection process of the
scapegoats.)

When Lt. Col. James Bo Gritz returned to the Golden Triangle of Burma in 1987
to video tape the drug overlord, General Khun Sa, naming the names of the
U.S. officials who were the general's largest customers for heroin, he was
startled to find that a two lane highway had been constructed in the 5 months
since he was last there. This highway, which went right to the general's
front door, was built by the Thai government using Rome plows left over from
the Vietnam war. Coming out, as the Colonel went in, were 10 ton trucks,
covered and loaded, with the Thai Army insignia on the side. There is only
one product that comes out of the Golden Triangle heroin! It is a
certainty that the smiling Thai ambassador has an accounting of every truck.

The importance of the discovery of this heroin highway lies in the fact that

Lewinsky Was One of 'Hundreds' Inside the White House: Morris

Monica Lewinsky was just one of "hundreds" of women Bill Clinton
cheated with during the his years as the nation's chief
executive, according to a longtime Clinton insider who estimated
the size of the presidential harem during a speech on Wednesday.

Commenting on Clinton's peccadilloes to a Miami University
audience, one-time presidential political guru Dick Morris
contended:

"He's had hundreds of women since he's been in the White House."

Referring to Clinton cabinet members who blindly accepted his
denials of an affair with Lewinsky, Morris said, "You had to be a
moron to believe this guy after his past record."

Morris' comments first appeared in a Thursday night report by
Cox News Service.

The former Clinton confidante declined to elaborate. But in
taped conversations with Linda Tripp, the White House intern
revealed the president had once told her he'd slept with more
than a hundred women during his Arkansas days.

In 1994, Arkansas state trooper L.D. Brown told the American
Spectator that he had procured "at least a hundred" women for
Clinton from 1982 till he left the governor's security detail in
1985.

But unlike Morris, neither Brown's account nor Lewinsky's had
anything to do with Clinton's White House philandering. On the
tapes, for instance, Lewinsky alludes to her jealousy over only
three or four other women she believed were also involved with
Clinton.

One target of Lewinsky's wrath was Eleanor Mondale, the CBS
newswoman and daughter of former Vice President Walter Mondale.
Lewinsky threw a fit outside the White House just weeks before
her affair with Clinton became public when she learned Clinton
was meeting with Mondale the same time Secret Service guards
denied her access.

In April 1998, former White House steward Michael McGrath
detailed for Star Magazine what he believed were Oval Office
assignations between Clinton and former West Wing secretary Debra
Schiff. The New York Times reported that Schiff's access to
Clinton was second only to Hillary Clinton's and that of Vice
President Al Gore.

As the Lewinsky case heated up, Schiff was transferred to the
State Department.

In 1996, former White House personnel director David Watkins
went public with claims that one-time Clinton girlfriend Marsha
Scott, who became a trusted White House insider to both Bill and
Hillary Clinton, had continued a sexual relationship with the
president. Scott is one of the few from the inner Arkansas circle
who remains at the White House.

In the same 1996 interview, Watkins hinted that Clinton was
carrying on with 25-year-old Catherine Cornelius, who instigated
Travelgate with her initial complaint that the travel office was
being mismanaged.

Cornelius was identified in official White House reports as
Clinton's "distant cousin." But neither Watkins nor the late
Vince Foster, both of whom knew Clinton from his earliest days in
Hope, Arkansas, had ever heard of Cornelius before.

Louis J. Freeh on the investigation and prosecution of Wen Ho
Lee, before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the
Senate Judiciary Committee, Sept. 26, 2000. The full statement

A related editorial appears here.

FBI Counterintelligence Investigations of Wen Ho Lee

Dr. Lee has been known to the FBI since 1982. At the time, he
worked in Los Alamos in X Division. His name surfaced when he
contacted a suspected agent of a foreign power who was the
subject of an ongoing FBI counterintelligence investigation. He
offered to help that person identify who had brought him to the
attention of the authorities. When Dr. Lee was first confronted
by the FBI in November 1983, he denied having contacted the
individual. In fact, he denied even knowing the person. Only
after Dr. Lee learned that the FBI had indisputable proof that
the contact took place did he finally admit it. After providing
an explanation of the reasons for the contact, he agreed to
cooperate with the FBI regarding the individual being
investigated for passing classified information. After he
provided limited cooperation, the FBI ultimately closed that
first inquiry into Dr. Lee because nothing else developed.

A decade later, in 1994, Dr. Lee again came under investigation
because of his actions. Dr. Lee met with a senior foreign
government nuclear weapons designer who was part of an officially
approved delegation visiting the United States. The
circumstances of the encounter clearly indicated that they knew
one another, even though Dr. Lee had never reported meeting this
weapons designer on prior trips abroad, as he was required by the
conditions of his employment to do. As in the 1982 case, Dr.
Lee did not reveal his relationship with this individual. . .
.

The FBI's investigation into this 1994 matter was still ongoing
when Dr.

Lee emerged as a potential subject in the 1996 Administrative
Inquiry by the Department of Energy (DOE) into the possible
compromise of information related to the W-88 nuclear warhead.
. . . Ultimately it was closed in favor of the larger W-88
investigation that began to be focused on Dr. Lee.

On May 26, 1996, DOE's Administrative Inquiry identified possible
potential candidates for the leak but concluded that "Wen Ho Lee
appears to have opportunity, means and motivation" to have
compromised the W-88 information. The FBI opened an
investigation of Dr. Lee in May 1996 based on this predicate.
Clearly, the FBI should have conducted an additional, independent
investigation to verify what was reflected in the Administrative
Inquiry. The same should have been done to eliminate other
suspects and to validate the conclusion that Dr. Lee was the most
likely individual to have compromised the W-88 information.
Nevertheless, when his name surfaced in the DOE investigation,
Dr. Lee already had a history with the FBI. . . . Given those
circumstances, the FBI began an investigation of the person who
DOE concluded to be the most probable candidate for the W-88
leak. Additional classified information has been provided to the
Committees about this episode.

As of December 1998, the FBI had not been able to verify that Dr.
Lee was responsible for the possible compromise of the W-88
information. However, in subsequent months the investigation led
to the discovery of the secret nuclear weapons information that
Dr. Lee had been accumulating over a period of years from Los
Alamos, as explained in greater detail below, in the section
dealing with the criminal investigation.

After opening the investigation into Dr. Lee's possible
involvement in the W-88 matter, the FBI sought to develop
sufficient indicia of probable cause for a warrant under the
Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to conduct
surveillance of Dr. Lee. The initial FISA application was
submitted in 1997 but was not presented to the Court. The
Department of Justice and the FBI had a good faith disagreement
as to whether the application alleged sufficient probable cause
to support a FISA warrant. The FBI's subsequent efforts to
enhance probable cause, which admittedly could and should have
been more aggressive, were ultimately unsuccessful. Additional
classified information about this portion of the investigation
has been provided to the Committees.

In March 1998, Dr. Lee traveled to Taiwan. In later
investigation it was determined he consulted with the Los Alamos
computer "Help Desk" to determine if he could access the secure
Los Alamos computer system from overseas. He was told he could
not.

In December 1998, Dr. Lee again traveled to Taiwan for three
weeks. He returned on December 21, 1998. DOE, which oversees

REVIEW OUTLOOK

The Wen Ho Lee Fake-Out

A bungled prosecution, another scandal dodged.

Friday, September 29, 2000 12:01 a.m. EDT

Yes, there was a Keystone Kops quality, as Senator Richard Bryan
put it, to the government's handling of the Wen Ho Lee
investigation. But the chattering classes are on the verge of a
major intellectual flake-out, enshrining Mr. Lee as a victim of
racism. No doubt he will soon be collecting a hundred grand a
year on the lecture circuit and selling his life story to
DreamWorks.

Any serious person, though, ought to read the accompanying
narrative from the statement of Janet Reno and Louis Freeh.
This is of course the prosecution's case, and we're not sure it
would be enough to convict on the counts alleging intent to harm
the U.S. But it is abundantly clear that Mr. Lee was up to no
good, that there was plenty of reason for investigators to look
at him with a jaundiced eye, and that under serious investigation
he acted like a guilty man. Having pleaded guilty to one felony,
he promises to cooperate with investigators in revealing the fate
of still-missing tapes. We won't hold our breath.

The prosecution's mistake was overkill. It framed the most
serious possible charges, and then asked for onerous detention
conditions prior to trial. Much of this was the work of John J.
Kelly, a college classmate and longtime crony of President
Clinton, who was U.S. Attorney in Albuquerque and has resigned to
run for Congress there. The Senate committee investigating the
incident ought to get him in and hear his story.

The overkill, plus some blunders in the investigator's testimony,
led Judge James A. Parker to feel he's been misled. So he made
some anti-government rulings on motions by Mr. Lee's attorneys
in hearings on the Classified Information Procedures Act. The
CIPA rulings were likely to give the defense nearly free rein in
rummaging through FBI and CIA procedures in similar cases.
Facing this "graymail," and with the promise of cooperation, the
government dropped 58 of its 59 counts.

This outburst of overkill followed a long period of laxity about
security under this Administration. Energy Secretary Hazel
O'Leary opened reams of nuclear secrets, the CIA chief downloaded
classified information to a laptop, the State Department lost
laptops with classified information and discovered a bug in one
of its conference rooms, and so on. In the Wen Ho Lee case
specifically, the Justice Department took some seemingly
inexplicable positions regarding the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Act, denying FBI requests for a wiretap on Mr.
Lee.

This week's Reno-Freeh statement glosses over this as "a
good-faith disagreement." But the FISA decision was studied at
length by the Senate Government Affairs Committee. Despite the
reasons for suspicion outlined in the Reno-Freeh statement, the
State Department refused even to take the Wen Ho Lee request to
the special FISA court for a decision. Senator Joe Lieberman
said he disagreed, but felt the decision defensible. Senator
Fred Thompson said that if the request had been granted the tapes
might have been salvaged, and that "the Justice Department's
refusal to permit surveillance was apparently the only time in
the more than 20-year existence of the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Act (FISA) that such a request was ever denied."

Keystone Kops indeed. To understand the government's bungling
you have to keep in mind the context of this investigation.
That is, keep in mind such names as James Riady, Maria Hsia,
Charlie Trie and Ng Lap Seng. Our news department broke the
Chinese contributions story in the final weeks of the 1996
campaign; the FISA denial came in June 1997. Mr. Kelly's
prosecutorial overkill came on the heels of the Cox report
criticizing security lapses at Los Alamos and other national
labs.

This is of course not to say that orders went out of the Oval
Office to go easy on Wen Ho Lee at first or to throw the book at
him later. But strange things inevitably happen, and serious
suspicions arise, when a President (and in Ms. Hsia's Buddhist
Temple case, a Vice President) let themselves be put in the debt
of a foreign intelligence service.

LEAKED MONSANTO REPORT
The full text is said to be available on the GeneWatch UK website: www.genewatch.org

MONSANTO'S 'DESPERATE' PROPAGANDA CAMPAIGN REACHES GLOBAL PROPORTIONS
A confidential internal report leaked to GeneWatch UK reveals that Monsanto is involved in a global campaign to promote GM foods by influencing which experts get on international scientific committees, promoting their views through supposedly independent scientists and gaining influence with key decision makers in government departments in developing countries.
Monsanto's ten page internal report, headed 'company confidential', summarises the activities of its Regulatory Affairs and Scientific Outreach teams for May and June 2000.
It describes developments in the regulation of GM crops in 20 countries world-wide and Monsanto's efforts to influence them. The countries include Japan, Bulgaria, Thailand, Mexico, Brazil and Korea as well as the USA and the European Union.
"The leaked report shows how Monsanto are trying to manipulate the regulation of GM foods across the globe to favour their interests," said Dr Sue Mayer, GeneWatch UK's Director. "It seems they are trying to buy influence with key individuals, stack committees with experts who support them, and subvert the scientific agenda around the world."
"The scale of their campaign shows just how desperate Monsanto is to save its business," said Dr Mayer. "The report shows that they have virtually given up trying to influence the debate here in the UK, having failed to convince the public of their case. But it is worrying that Monsanto has clearly stepped up activity elsewhere, particularly in developing countries. And whilst Monsanto often claim they want to listen and engage in dialogue, it is quite clear from this leaked report that this is just window dressing for a behind-the-scenes campaign to promote their products come what may. Governments and scientists are going to have to take precautions against such pressure if they are not to lose even more consumer confidence."
The following extracts from the leaked internal paper illustrate how pervasive the Monsanto campaign is:
"Global: Scientific outreach and Ag Regulatory was instrumental in assuring that key internationally recognized scientific experts were nominated to the FAO/WHO expert consultation on food safety which was held in Geneva this past month. The consultation and final report were very supportive of plant biotechnology, including support for the critical role of substantial equivalence in food safety assessments, antibiotic resistance markers used in these products, and the reservation of animal feeding studies to address specific questions rather than for routine safety"
"Thailand: A GMO detection lab was established by the Ministry of Public Health to develop methods to certify exports to Europe. The lab director Dr. Pakdi is a key player in international CODEX activities and has requested Monsanto's assistance to train technicians and provide reference samples. Cooperation with this request is likely given the importance of the lab and Dr. Pakdi's position."
"Global: Contacts were made with the directors of Poison Control Centers (PCC) in many countries which should be especially useful to facilitate rational regulation because the Poison Center directors are relied upon heavily by state and local agencies;...an editorial was drafted by Dr John Thomas, (Emeritus Professor of U.Texas Medical School in San Antonio) to place in a medical journal as the first in a planned series of outreach efforts to physicians; a meeting was held with Prof. David Khayat, an internationally well known cancer specialist, to collaborate on an article demonstrating the absence of links between GM food and cancers..."
"Global: Monsanto representatives were successful at the recent Codex Food Labelling Committee meeting on maintaining two labelling options for further consideration by the committee."

FOX BGH LAWSUIT REPORTERS TO SPEAK IN LOS ANGELES

Florida Jury Concludes:
FOX PRESSURED AKRE\WILSON TO BROADCAST "FALSE, DISTORTED OR SLANTED NEWS
REPORT"

The Midnight Special Bookstore
1318 3rd St. Promenade
Santa Monica, CA 90401

At The Midnight Special Bookstore:

10/3 Tuesday, 7:00 PM -- Fairness Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) the media
watch group presents their monthly program. As a special guest, FAIR will
have Steve Wilson and Jane Akre, two award-winning reporters who sued FOX
Television after a Tampa affiliate pressured them to broadcast a news report.
The guests are presented courtesy of The Great Boycott, an organization
formed to protest the power, money and influence of the international
chemical lobby.

During their investigation, Wilson and Akre uncovered how a large share of
America’s milk supply has quietly become adulterated with the effects of a
synthetic hormone (bovine growth hormone, or BGH) secretly injected into
cows… and how pressure from the hormone maker Monsanto led Fox TV to fire
both reporters and sweep under the rug much of what they discovered but were
never allowed to broadcast.

Though legal since approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1993,
the artificial hormone commonly known as BGH has been linked to cancer and is
banned throughout Europe and unapproved in several other countries because of
human health concerns.

After a five-week trial and six hours of deliberation which ended August 18,
2000, a Florida state court jury unanimously determined that Fox "acted
intentionally and deliberately to falsify or distort the plaintiffs' news
reporting on BGH." In that decision, the jury also found that Jane's threat
to blow the whistle on Fox's misconduct to the FCC was the sole reason for
the termination... and the jury awarded awarded $425,000 in damages which
makes her eligible to apply for reimbursement for all court costs, expenses
and legal fees.

The journalists, who happen to be married to each other, have not been
offered full-time work in the mainstream media since their experience at Fox
and in court. The suit and information about use of the hormone in dairy
cattle are presented in full detail at a special Internet web site. The site
can be viewed at:

http://www.foxBGHsuit.com

Introducing them will be members of The Great Boycott, who will present
information about their organization, their current agenda in Los Angeles
(which includes the opposition of water fluoridation in the Los Angeles area)
and a special report of information uncovered by reporter Barbara Keeler of
The Whole Life Times and Robert Sterling of Konformist.com, on the monetary
links between controversial 20/20 journalist John Stossel and the chemical
lobby.

The Great Boycott targets the worldleading producers of pesticides,
genetically engineered foods, and toxic wastes: Monsanto, Du Pont, Dow,
Novartis, Imperial Chemical Industries, Rhone Poulenc, Bayer, and Hoechst.

From Melbourne to Prague: the Struggle for a Deglobalized
World

By Walden Bello*

(Talk delivered at a series of engagements on the occasion
of demonstrations against the World Economic Forum (Davos)
in Melbourne, Australia, 6-10 September 2000.)

We are, here in Melbourne in the next few days and in Prague
in two weeks' time, participating in an historic enterprise:
that of creating a critical mass to turn the tide against
corporate-driven globalization.

For years, we were told that globalization was benign, that
it was a process that brought about the greatest good for
the greatest number, that good citizenship lay in accepting
the impersonal rule of the market and good governance meant
governments getting out of the way of market forces and
letting the most effective incarnation of market freedom,
the transnational corporation, go about its task of bringing
about the most efficient mix of capital, land, technology
and labor.

The unrestricted flow of goods and capital in a world
without borders was said to be the best of all possible
worlds, though when some observers pointed out that to be
consistent with the precepts of their 18th century prophet,
Adam Smith, proponents of the neoliberal doctrine would also
have to allow the unrestricted flow of labor to create this
best of all possible worlds, they were, quite simply,
ignored.

Such inconsistencies could be overlooked since for over two
decades, neoliberalism or, as it was grandiosely styled, the
"Washington Consensus" had carried all before it. As one of
its key partisans has nostalgically remarked recently, "the
Washington Consensus seemed to gain near-universal approval
and provided a guiding ideology and underlying intellectual
consensus for the world economy, which was quite new in
modern history." (1)

Globalization Unravels I: The Asian Financial Collapse The
unrestricted flow of speculative capital in accordance with
Washington Consensus doctrine was what our governments in
East Asia institutionalized in the early 1990's, under the
strong urging of the International Monetary Fund and the US
Treasury Department. The result: the $100 billion that
flowed in between 1993 and 1997 flowed out in the bat of an
eyelash during the Great Panic of the summer of 1997,
bringing about the collapse of our economies and spinning
them into a mire of recession and massive unemployment from
which most still have to recover. Since 1997, financial
instability or the constant erosion of our currencies has
become a way of life under IMF- imposed monetary regimes
that leave the value of our money to be determined
day-to-day by the changing whims, moods, and preferences of
foreign investors and currency speculators.

Globalization Unravels II: The Failure of Structural
Adjustment The Asian financial crisis put the International
Monetary Fund on the hotseat, leading to a widespread
popular reappraisal of its role in the Third World in the
1980s and early 1990's, when structural adjustment programs
were imposed on over 70 developing countries. After over 15
years, there were hardly any cases of successful adjustment
programs. What structural adjustment had done, instead, was
to institutionalize stagnation in Africa and Latin America,
alongside rises in the levels of absolute poverty and income
inequality.

Structural adjustment and related free-market policies that
were imposed beginning in the early 1980's were the central
factor that triggered a sharp rise in inequality globally,
with one authoritative UNCTAD study covering 124 countries
showing that the income share of the richest 20 per cent of
the world's population rose from 69 to 83 per cent between
1965 and 1990. (2) Adjustment policies were a central
factor behind the rapid concentration of global income in
recent years - a process which, in 1998, saw Bill Gates, with
a net worth of $90 billion, Warren Buffet, with $36 billion,
and Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, with $30 billion,
achieve a combined income that was greater than the total
combined income of the 600 million that live in the world's
48 least developed countries, a great number of which had
been subjected to adjustment programs.

Structural adjustment has also been a central cause of the
lack of any progress in the campaign against poverty. The
number of people globally living in poverty - that is, on less
than a dollar a day - increased from 1.1 billion in 1985 to
1.2 billion in 1998, and is expected to reach 1.3 billion
this year. (3) According to a recent World Bank study, the
absolute number of people living in poverty rose in the
1990's in Eastern Europe, South Asia, Latin America and the
Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa - all areas that came under
the sway of adjustment programs. (4)

Confronted with this dismal record, James Wolfensohn of the
World Bank had the sense to move the institution away from
its identification with structural adjustment with public
relations initiatives like the SAPRI, or the

Black gold green lies

By Alan Caruba
web posted September 25, 2000

If the nation's media rolls over for the lies Al Gore is telling about the
high cost of gasoline and what's to come with heating oil and natural gas
costs, then we are being put on the path to an economic disaster in America.
The simple reason is that everything travels on wheels these days. We all
drive to work and every piece of goods that gets made and delivered comes in
a truck.

Reportedly, both the Secretary of the Treasury, Lawrence Summers, and
Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan, issued a memorandum calling
the President's decision to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve
"a major and substantial policy mistake." It's worse than that. It is a
decision driven totally by politics, not policy. It was a decision to advance
Hillary Clinton's campaign in New York State and Al Gore's floundering
campaign nationwide. There will be no impact on oil prices

In the United States today, we import more than half of all the oil we need
to function and our economy requires what we're using now and more in the
near future. Why? Because our economy is growing. Some people here at home
and many others round the world resent this. The same holds true for the need
to provide more electricity. We need more coal-burning utilities because coal
is electrical power in America and we need nuclear powered utilities too.
Ralph Nader's running mate, Ms. LaDuke, came to fame opposing all nuclear
power. Al Gore thinks that nuclear power "is now obviously at a technological
dead end."

Why is the cost of gas so high? Why don't we have the utilities we require?
Why is the EPA attacking the utilities we have? Why haven't we been drilling
for our own reserves of oil? Why can't we open up a new coal mine anywhere?
Why did Clinton put the richest reserves of high-grade coal in the West off
limits to any development? My friends, I give you Al Gore and the policies of
the environmental movement, the Greens!

Right now in Alaska, according to one of the latest U.S. Geological Surveys,
there's at least 16 billion barrels of oil going untapped. That's comparable
to five years of U.S. imports. Guess what? The Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge is off-limits to any use of its huge reserves. The caribou are too
important. The Clinton-Gore administration has also seen to it that the oil
reserves off California and Florida can't be tapped either. We have to
protect the sea otters and seals. Want to know why you're paying so much
money to fill your tank? Ask Al Gore, Jr!

This is, of course, the same Al Gore, who, on September 21st, said, "People
should be able to get in their cars and drive where they want, when they
want, at a low price." This is the same Al Gore who, writing in his book,
"Earth in the Balance" said, "Today, we must recognize that our heavy
reliance on cars as our primary means of transportation accounts for a large
proportion of the carbon dioxide emitted in the atmosphere from the
industrial world. Objectively, it makes little sense for each of us to burn
up all the energy necessary to travel with several thousands pounds of metal
wherever we go."

To demonstrate how insane Gore's views about the automobile truly are, you
need only read his book where, at one point, he says "We now know that their
cumulative impact on the global environment is posing a mortal threat to the
security of every nation more deadly than that of any military enemy we are
ever again likely to confront."

Objectively and scientifically, there is no global warming and the amount of
CO2 humans produce is nothing compared to the billions of metric tons
produced by the oceans of the world and other natural sources. More CO2 is a
boon to agriculture and forest growth. Measurements of the earth's overall
temperature all indicate there has been no warming in over fifty years.
Nothing Al Gore Jr. has to say on this subject makes any sense whatever.

Meanwhile, the OPEC nations, whose oil it is, have pointed out that the
reason we are paying high prices here and the Europeans are paying even
higher prices is because of the taxes imposed by our federal and state
governments and those of the other consumer nations. To put it another way,
the US and the European governments get huge amounts of money for doing
nothing while the producers of oil are depleting what, for most, is their
only natural resource.

OPEC nations have enough known reserves for, at the least, another fifty
years. That means we have time to (1) drill and utilize our own reserves and
(2) come up with new technology to reduce our dependency on oil. If you doubt
we can do this, you know nothing of history. It wasn't until the last century
that the automobile was even invented or came into widespread use. Before
that it was horses!

At this point you must also factor in the Clean Air policies of the
Environmental Protection Agency. Led by Gore's hand-picked director, Carol
Browner, the

On September 6, 2000, in the Haynes Manor area of north Nashville, Tennessee,
a 17-month-old boy died in his crib from smoke inhalation during a fire in a
house in which he and nine other children had just been put down for a nap.
The house was operating as an unregulated child-care provider, which under
Tennessee state law, may care for no more than six children, two of who must
be related to the caregiver. Apparently the house did not have smoke
detectors, which are required by state law in a facility that provides
child-care. The baby's death was an unfortunate, tragic, and quite possibly
avoidable accident. The accident we as a society must avoid is the tragedy of
allowing such incidents to infect the thinking of citizens and legislators
emboldening them to enact and enforce regulations of child-care providers.

What is really irksome about stories like these is the language used. Words
such as "caregiver" and phrases like "unregulated child-care provider" serve
only to obfuscate what is actually being discussed. This was a neighborhood
mommy watching neighborhood kids and maybe making a few bucks for her
trouble. But as soon as a fire starts and a kid dies, through the miracle of
legal jargon and journalistic palaver, "Little Jimmy's mom from down the
street" metamorphizes into an "unregulated child care provider". Talk radio
immediately chimes in on how the parents should be more responsible in their
choice of "caregivers" and that maybe government should step in and supervise
and regulate anyone who is watching anyone else's kids.

First of all, whenever possible, some parent, I don't care which one, but
some parent should make it their full-time job and mission in life to raise
their children until at least the age of five. Maybe they won't be able to
pay for the brand new Benz, the Jacuzzi in the backyard, or the latest
incarnation of the G. I. Joe with the Kung Fu grip, but they will be
fulfilling their most important role as a human being: parent. Many couples
with small children who say they are working out of necessity are being less
than genuine. But thanks to tax slavery, an excessive consumer culture, and
incessant government regulation of life many families do have to maintain
two-incomes, one to pay Uncle Sam and one to put food on the table, to say
nothing of the trials and tribulations facing single mothers.

While mommy is slaving in the work force to try and pay the State, someone
must watch the babies. Mothers in this situation most likely do not have the
means to enroll their child in the local Montessori school or even a fully
accredited and respected day-care facility. They have to take a crap shoot.
They have to risk their children's health and safety by placing them in the
hands of either degeneracy or incompetence in some half-ass YMCA basement
day-care center. If a mother in this precarious position decides instead to
pay her neighbor, "Little Jimmy's mom", who doesn't work and seems like a
good mommy, to take care of her kids; what's wrong with that?

The world is supposed to work that way, neighbors helping out neighbors,
communities helping one another. Sometimes favors are exchanged, sometimes
money. However, if more than few neighborhood working-moms ask "Little
Jimmy's mom" for help all of a sudden Jimmy's mom needs State sanction to do
a good turn. The care of children is not an area that government, federal,
state, or local, need be intimately involved with. If the person you leave
your child with doesn't have smoke alarms, and that was important to you, you
wouldn't have left your kid there. If "Little Jimmy's mom" has to run around
installing smoke detectors (or whatever other hoops the State chooses to make
her jump through) in order to help out her neighbors and make a little extra
cash, she's either going to have to start upping the price or the next time a
neighbor asks her to watch their child Jimmy's mom will give them a big,
"Hell no! I don't need the hassle."

Government should not assert itself whatsoever in the rearing and caring of
children who have able-bodied mentally competent relatives who can make
decisions about their care. Government intervention in childcare takes away
our ability to form meaningful bonds with our neighbors, our families, and
our community. We should not depend on the sanction of the State for the care
of children. People should take care of their own kin. When they cannot they
must be free to choose who watches their children and not be forced to deal
with government red tape that makes life harder than it already is. As the
Outlaw Josey Wales said, "Governments don't live together, people live
together." Damn right.

A funny thing happened on the way to the regulatory state
http://www.enterstageright.com/archive/articles/0400regstate.htm
By Diane Alden
web posted April 10, 2000

The federal government was given few, limited and enumerated powers. The
Constitution grants the federal government powers over such issues as
national defense, international trade and diplomacy, immigration procedures,
maintenance of the monetary system, patents and copyright enforcement,
bankruptcy procedures and the regulation of interstate commerce.

But in the last 75 years government has gone beyond the limits set by the
Founders and strayed to the other end of the galaxy.

In the process the constitutional republic has been replaced by the
regulatory state. What is left of the republic and the Bill of Rights is
under assault from the trial lawyers, the environmental movement, anti-gun
lobby, the corporate-government-foundation triad, the congress (as separation
of powers becomes history), runaway taxes, federal and state regulatory
monster, a corrupt press, a court system which has lost its way, dumbed down
education, a self absorbed citiznery and a debased culture. What has happened
to the republic might be called the Madison Effect, in honor of James
Madison's famous dictum that "men love power."

What went wrong in the republic has many fathers. Some of the problems date
back to the 1800s when America's intellectuals adopted a philosophy hatched
in Prussian universities. A philosophy which has spawned everything from
Nazism to communism to environmentalism to Freudian psychology. A creed which
is at odds with the intellectual tradition of the Founders. However, it was a
system of thought and philosophy which fit very well with the growth of the
state and the demise of individual freedom.

Many American intellectuals swallowed the collectivist--statist bilge and
passed it on to generations of young people some of whom became the elitist
left. America's educated elite promoted the growth of the state by
insinuating the activist federal government on America. The Great Depression
was the major catalyst for the the success of the statist philosophy and
subsequent growth of the federal government. Americans began to like the
interference of the state in their lives because it came with money and
promises of one sort or another and a sense of security. We became more
interested in what government could do for us than what we could do for
ourselves.

Once upon a time in the republic called America people were smart enough to
know that government never does anything for free. Government has no
conscience and it will do or say anything to get power and control. A
republican form of government is supposed to take care of that problem. But
we are no longer a constitutional republic. We are a nation with a plebiscite
and the whim of the majority is our creed. We call ourselves a nation of laws
not men. Unfortunately, someone never told the government or the federal
court system that there was a point where even a good thing can become a bad
thing. We have overdone a good thing. At the moment we are drowning in
regulatory law.

Rather than being as judicious as the Founders and keeping it
simple--stupidly we wove the noose that is strangling us. The Bill of Rights
and the Constitution were simple and straight forward coda. But we took a
classic construction and stuck ribbons and bows on it, tore at the hem and
the sleeves, and ended up with something we can't wear. But by gum the
government is going to make sure we are covered in something aka the
regulatory state.

Two of the greatest tragedies of the 20th century were the Great Depression
and the various social and cultural movements of the 60s. Both were born in
idealism stemming from 19th century German philosophy and a bastardized
version of Judeo-Christian tradition. The only one of the movements worth the
trouble was the civil rights movement for blacks. The rest merely cheapened
the civil rights struggle.

Moreover, the Great Depression wasn't just an economic tragedy it was the
death knell for the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. The federal Nanny
State began when Roosevelt instituted the New Deal. That in turn became
Truman's Fair Deal, and LBJ's "war on poverty."

Double Your Trouble

Since John Kennedy the number of federal agencies has doubled. Nearly every
president since Roosevelt has added their own particular "war." Each "war"
requires its own bureaucracy. Over the years, presidential, congressional and
court rule making in regards to our war mentality has led us to the ten
headed dragon better known as the federal bureaucracy.

It is the nature of bureaucracy that the process and paper work are more
important than the results. The Federal Register a daily report on new and
proposed regulations went from 15,000 pages in 1963 to over 70,000 pages
today. The cost of government is nearly $2 trillion a year. The cost and the
results are are not in sync.

This eyewitness report from a Palestinian Muslim reader
of MER present at the Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem today:

   CARNAGE IN THE AQSA MOSQUE

Four dead and fifty to sixty civilians injured at the Aqsa mosque after
clashes between Isreali forces and Palestinian demonstrators, today.
Children protected by trees and large stones at close range to Isreali
forces threw rocks in demonstration of yesterdays visit of Ariel Sharon to
the Aqsa mosque.

Retaliating with live ammunition and rubber bullets, Isreali soldiers fired
indiscriminantly at women, children and men. After reinforcements arrived,
the soldiers initiated a massive assault on the demonstrators firing freely
at anyone in sight.

Many demonstrators were covered in blood; they were either injured or lay
dead as a result of the attack. Those who were killed were carried on the
shoulders of the demonstrators chanting "Allahu Akbar", and those who were
injured exited the mosque to seek medical help.

Many people hid in the mosques and others tried to exit. Those who tried to
exit were fired upon as they retreated. Nobody was spared, and unfortunatly
their were no Journalists in sight. Ambulances were even denied entry.

Tensions are running high in the old city while Arafat visits Barak at his
home and Clinton at his oval office. The children of the intifada are the
only ones left to stand and defend the honor of the Aqsa and Palestine.

This is the result of the Camp David accords.

DEAL LOOMS AS BLOOD FLOWS

"If there is an agreement it will include an end
to the conflict, permanent borders for Israel
recognized by the world, 80 percent of the
settlers in Judea and Samaria under Israeli
sovereignty in settlement blocs, security
arrangements, principally along the eastern
border, and Jerusalem bigger than ever since
King David - with a solid Jewish majority for
generations, united under our sovereignty, and
recognized by the world as the capital of Israel...
Now I don't want to go into details. There will
also be a Palestinian capital that will be
called Al-Quds... It will be Jerusalem and
Al-Quds, one next to the other, as two capitals."
 Ehud Barak - 9/28/00

MID-EAST REALITIES - www.MiddleEast.Org - Washington - 9/29/00:
They are desperately trying to find the formulations that will bring forth
another White House ceremony allowing Clinton this time to put his arms around
Ehud Barak and Yasser Arafat and "end the conflict" with another historic photo.

There is much short-term political gain to be had for all. There's much glory
for Clinton, at least temporary salvation for Barak, and bundles of money for
Arafat.
The Israelis will give the Palestinians words and gestures, but in the end
they will remain in control. There is a long history of such duplicitous and
disingenuous agreements going way back to Ben-Gurion, who kept promising the
Arabs in the 30s that the Jews had no intention to establish a Jewish State.
The Palestinians will give what the Israelis want the most -- what will be
said to be complete recognition and legitimacy with all of historic Palestine
west of the Jordan in reality under their control, the East Bank more firmly
than ever in the hands of the Hashemite clan that has worked on behalf of the
West ever since the days of Lawrence.
Barak has sent Yossi Beilin to Italy to coordinate European support for what
they are trying to make happen in the weeks ahead. Not only do they expect the
Europeans to applaud loudly, they are being pressed to come up with a huge
multi-billion
package to "resettle" the Palestinian refugees. Beilin meets today with the
Pope to further coordinate the looming deal. Meanwhile the Acting Israeli Foreign
Minister has been rushing to meetings with Mubarak and Abdullah making sure they
are on board and will do their part in this historic drama.
It's an extraordinarily complicated world political play that is underway,
one fragile in bringing about, one even more fragile in keeping together once
the deal is done. But even so, with Barak facing the return of the Knesset in
30 days, Arafat facing his own people who have been assured they will have "a
State" this year, and Clinton just about out of time to burnish his legacy, they
are all desperately trying to do a deal now. Meanwhile, today in Palestine:

CNN calls it "more violent riots". This eyewitness
report from a Palestinian Muslim reader of MER who
was present at the Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem today
and was himself grazed by an Israeli bullet. "I
did the best I can to describe what happened today.
One bullet grazed me. I saw a bullet kill a man.
It split his head open and blood was everywhere."
Also unconfirmed reports this morning are that
Israel's Chief of Police was hit in the head by
  a rock and is hospitalized.

The Associated Press

JERUSALEM (AP) -- Israelis marked the Jewish new year at sundown Friday with
festive family meals, dipping apples in honey to usher in a sweet year, but
the celebrations were marred by deadly Israeli-Palestinian clashes.

In Jerusalem, the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest shrine, normally packed
with worshippers during high holidays, stood deserted Friday after
confrontations erupted between Palestinian stone throwers and Israeli riot
police at the adjacent mosque compound. The rioting left four Palestinians
dead, 175 injured, and 44 Israeli policemen hurt.

Israel faces a year of uncertainty, with a peace treaty appearing
increasingly elusive and Prime Minister Ehud Barak's government teetering.

The Jewish new year, called Rosh Hashanah in Hebrew, begins a 10-day period
of solemn introspection, soul-searching and asking for forgiveness for sins.
At sundown Friday, Israelis gathered for elaborate meals marking the start
of the year 5761.

Children performed holiday songs they had learned in school. Diners dipped
apples in honey and ate pomegranates to reaffirm the commandment that Jews
do as many good deeds as the fruit as seeds. Hotels and guest houses in
Israel's resort areas, including the Galilee in northern Israel, were filled
with holiday makers.

This year, the first day of the two-day holiday fell on the Jewish Sabbath.
The sounding of the shofar, a trumpet made from a ram's horn that
traditionally heralds the holiday's start, was absent, since the shofar is
not used on the Sabbath, according to Jewish law. It will sound on Sunday,
the second day of the holiday.

While many Israelis attend special religious services on both days, others
take advantage of the long weekend to travel to vacation spots in Israel and
abroad. Beaches and resorts are expected to be crowded throughout the
holiday.

The solemn period ends with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, the holiest
day on the Jewish calendar, starting at sundown Oct. 8.

Israelis' feelings about the future were mixed.

In a poll in the Yediot daily, 60 percent said the state of the nation is
good, 83 percent said their personal situation is good and 46 percent
expected a change for the better in the coming year. Still, more than half
the people, 55 percent, said their personal mood is not good.

Only 26 percent thought the peace process with the Arabs was going well,
while 70 percent said it was not. The poll, by the Dahaf agency, questioned
501 Israeli adults and quoted a 4.5 percent margin of error.

Israelis crowded shopping centers and open-air marketplaces, stocking up for
the holiday. At Jerusalem's outdoor Mahane Yehuda market, extra police
patrolled. Markets have been targets for bomb attacks in the past.

"We hope this is the last New Year without peace," said student Shira Kohn,
19, as she shopped.

[CTRL] Fujimori Confident Stability will be Preserved

2000-09-29 Thread Amelia

-Caveat Lector-

Fujimori confident political stability will be preserved in Peru

By GEORGE GEDDA
The Associated Press
9/29/00 5:46 PM

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, seeking U.S.
assistance as he struggles to survive the political turmoil now engulfing
his country, said Friday that "stability and democracy in Peru will be
guaranteed."

Fujimori made the comment to reporters after Secretary of State Madeleine
Albright told him she supported his decision to convene early elections and
urged him to use his remaining months in office to promote democratic
reform.

"The priority now is the Peruvian electoral process," Fujimori said. "I
expect that it will be under my direction, consistent with my commitment."

Fujimori's hastily-arranged visit here also included a meeting Thursday
evening with Organization of American States Secretary General Cesar
Gaviria, who is overseeing a dialogue among Peruvian political leaders aimed
at forging a consensus on ground rules for next year's elections.

At a news conference Friday, Gaviria said the process is working well,
noting that a series of agreements has been reached, including a commitment
to announce an election date by Oct. 15.

He suggested that the OAS-led process is indispensable for democratic
stability in Peru. "There is no other way," he said.

Gaviria acknowledged there have been threats by some in the military to
stage a coup but said he expects its support for the process.

"The most important thing is to protect and preserve Peruvian democracy," he
said.

While Fujimori has remained silent on the purpose of his visit, Gaviria said
the Peruvian leader wanted to convey a sense of the complexity of the
process his country faces in rearranging the electoral calendar.

"He doesn't have the same power as before," Gaviria said.

It was just two months ago that Fujimori was sworn in to a third term but a
corruption scandal and other developments have left him in a weakened
position, forcing him to call elections four years ahead of schedule.

"You've done the right thing," Albright told Fujimori at the outset of their
meeting, according to State Department spokesman Richard Boucher.

As Fujimori made his rounds here, the Peruvian Congress voted to dismantle
the country's National Intelligence Service, which for a decade served as
the power base of the discredited and now-exiled spy chief Vladimiro
Montesinos. The vote was 101-1.

Rumors of a military coup plot have swirled around Lima in recent days.

In addition, some 2,500 laborers, teachers and students marched to the
Government Palace, demanding Fujimori's immediate resignation and the
extradition of Montesinos from Panama to face corruption charges. He is
accused of trying to bribe an opposition congressman to join Fujimori's
alliance.

Fujimori was smiling as he arrived at the State Department on a comfortable
early fall day and his demeanor was the same when he left 45 minutes later.
He said he was not prepared to respond to reporters' questions but did so
when several pressed him as he was getting into his car.

He brushed aside questions about Montesinos and coup threats.

"I prefer at this time that you excuse me for not commenting on these
subjects but what I do want to say is that stability and democracy in Peru
will be guaranteed."

He then headed for a meeting with National Security adviser Sandy Berger.

White House spokesman Joe Lockhart said, "I think he received a consistent
message from both Secretary of State Albright and from Mr. Berger that we
think he's going along the right path forward toward democracy--toward full
democracy in the context of what the OAS has done and the work we have done
along with them.

"The message that we heard was that he believed in the OAS process and we
reiterated that we wanted to see this done as soon as possible."

At the start of his meeting with Albright, both commented on how different
the situation was in Peru since the two met in New York three weeks ago --
before the corruption scandal involving Montesinos erupted.

Three months ago, the Clinton administration was prepared to impose
sanctions against Peru after concluding that a May 28 presidential runoff
election was rigged in Fujimori's favor. The administration held back
because of a lack of support among other OAS members.

As a compromise, the OAS decided to encourage Peru to undertake democratic
reform -- a process that has taken on added importance with Fujimori's call
for early elections.

: nine years ago, when the Dinka boy, then 5, was kidnapped by an Arab
: cattleman and made a slave. Shama escaped after his master put burning

: In this impoverished African nation, some 14,000 southern Sudanese chil-

: government figures.

: Officials in the capital, Khartoum, say the kidnappings are simply part
: of intertribal conflicts. But critics insist that the abducted, whom

: part of a government-sponsored program of forced Islamization - an
: accusation Sudanese officials dismiss as false propaganda.

: Human rights organizations, as well as Christian church officials,
: allege that the fundamentalist Islamist government is involved in
: abducting southerners of animist and Christian backgrounds. Since 1983,
: the predominantly African southerners, most of them of the Dinka tribe,
: have fought for autonomy from the Muslim north.

: A spokesman for the Sudan Council of Churches says that the "regime's
: goal is to establish an Islamic state and society in Sudan that means
: churches will have to be marginalized, squeezed."

: Other Christian leaders, who also asked not to be named, say "slave-

: Recently the US envoy to Sudan, Harry Johnston, told the UN Human

: and Christian Solidarity International has reported buying freedom for
: 4,968 slaves for $35 each, the local value of two goats.

: "Our sisters and brothers in Sudan are hurting, oppressed, dying," says

: US. "Many are slaves ... and they are crying out for our help and
: assistance." Fr. Goode is set to address a Sept. 9 gathering at the UN
: organized by New York City churches and other groups to focus on Sudan.

: In May 1999, following widespread criticism, the Sudanese government
: formed the Committee for the Eradication of the Abduction of Women and
: Children (CEAWC). The establishment of the CEAWC has earned tempered
: praise from human rights groups.

: Amnesty International has called the committee's establishment a "very
: important and positive step," but its Sudan representative, Annette
: Weber, cautions that mechanisms must be set up "not only to bring
: people back, but to work for preventing further abductions."

: Ahmed Mufti, CEAWC director, says that since his office opened, "there
: has not been one single case of abduction reported," He adds, "We are
: not only interested in addressing the symptoms of abduction, but
: abduction itself, and the root causes. There is no point in returning
: these abductees if tomorrow you have another abduction."

: Slavery in Sudan has deep roots in the country's past of repeated wars,
: including the current civil war, which has dragged on for 17 years.

: The largest number of abductions reportedly take place in Bahr el
: Ghazal, Darfur, and Kordofan. There, Arab tribesmen, collectively known
: as baggara (cattle herders) carry out raids on mainly Dinka land, but
: also parts of the Nuba Mountains. Human rights groups allege that the
: baggara are armed and protected by the government.

: The attackers take livestock, belongings, and harvests - and need
: carriers to transport the goods. Consequently, captive women and
: children become part of the baggara's workforce. They fetch water and
: firewood, herd livestock, and do heavy manual labor.

: "The identity of people is changing dramatically," Ms. Weber says. "If
: a girl was abducted when she was five years old, and now she's 20, her
: name may be changed to a Muslim name or another name suggesting a
: family bond has been established."

: The CEAWC collaborates with the Dinka Committee, headed by chief James
: Aguir. Mr. Aguir works with other tribal leaders to track down missing
: people. He also runs the Khartoum halfway house where rescued slaves

The Dr. Underwager (FMSF) Entrapment Harassment Technique

Statements on Ralph Underwager by the New England Commissioners of
Child Welfare Agencies, in ³Accuracy of Expert Testimony in Child Sexual
Abuse Cases: A Case Study of Ralph Underwager and Hollida Wakefield,²
written by Anna C. Salter, Ph.D. The study takes an extremely dim view of
the fraudulent child abuse ³studies² published by Underwager and Wakefield,
and their perennial use if false attributions to support their statements in
support of accused pedophiles and child abusers. The following account,
excerpted from Dr. Salter¹s report, recalls Linda Tripp¹s illegal use of
recorded telephone conversations as a means of entrapment:

³It had been my experience that what children report about child sexual
abuse is eventually corroborated by offenders, once they cease denying their
offense in treatment. Dr. Underwager¹s claim that individuals often falsely
admit because of threats by the legal system had not been my experience.
Offenders who admitted had in every case been able to provide detailed
accounts that went beyond what they knew the child had said. This is in
keeping with thee documented low rates of fictitious reports *2% to 8%
according to Jones and McGraw, 1987)²

³I offer the following personal anecdotes both the illustrate the
difficulties with accuracy in Dr. Underwager¹s work and, frankly, as a
caution to others whom might work in this area. I attended a conference for
criminal defense attorneys in Nashville, Tennessee on December 9 and 10th,
1988 at which Dr. Underwager and Ms. Wakefield were the main speakers. I and
several other mental health professionals disagreed with some of the
statements made, e.g., that the prevalence of child sexual abuse was under
20%. The mental health professionals expressing concern about his comments
were offered 15 minutes to rebut Underwager and Wakefield on the second day
of the conference
³Several weeks later I received a phone call in which a woman said she
had heard about me from a friend at the conference and wanted my help. She
said her daughter had accused her ex-boyfriend of sexual abuse and Dr.
Underwager was testifying for the other side. Would I testify for her?
³No,² I said, ³I didn¹t go around the country testifying in these cases.²
She asked who Dr. Underwager was and I made several remarks about the fact
that he appeared to always testify on one side of these cases, and commented
on my concerns about his scholarship.
³A week later I received a transcript of my comments in the mail from
Dr. Underwager, a demand that I recant, hints of legal action Dr.
Underwager admitted to APA that he had a tape of the conversation, which I
think it is fair to infer, was not a genuine request for my help. In the
recourse of the resultant investigation, Dr. Underwager sent in a statement
regarding my comments at the conference
³The APA ethics committee eventually voted unanimously that the suit
was Œentirely without merit.¹ I have since learned that a number of other
people have had phone calls which asked their opinion of Dr. Underwager,
have found later that the call was recorded without their knowledge or
consent, and have been subsequently charged with ethical violations for
their comments²

My strong suspicion is that Sharon made his little visit to the Temple Mount

Gee Shannon. I didn't know you were a Hoffman fan. Very impressive!

Nine Days to Lieberman's Kol Nidrei Rite on Yom Kippur Eve

Coeur d'Alene, Idaho (Sept. 29, hoffman-info.com.news.html). The clock is
ticking on the countdown to the Kol Nidrei rite, which Joe Lieberman, the
Democrat candidate for the Vice Presidency of the US, will perform in just a
 few days.

Ooooh scary. Kol Nidre. As if you or he even knows what it means.

Just the beginning alone is absurd. To use Judaism in conjunction with the
plural of the word god, is ridiculous. Jews don't believe in god*s*. That's
not monotheistic.

Inevitably the media describe Yom Kippur in hues of deepest piety and kid
gloves' reverence, as a "penitential rite" during which saintly Jews
approach their Maker and beg his forgiveness for wrongs committed in the
 past.

 Rubbish!

Says Michael Hoffman - neo-nazi wanabe, and half-wit scholar.

Very astute.

The fact that Lieberman will engage in this rite on the evening of Oct. 8 is
frankly outrageous. He and his handlers can only get away with this if Kol
Nidrei is falsified, usually by the media's claim that the absolution being
sought is for promises broken in the past.

Now think about this statement. How many times in your whole life have you
heard the media make this claim? Think about what Hoffman is saying, and
actually number the times. Could Hoffman be full of shit?

To counter this disinformation I refer you to documentary evidence --
Babylonian Talmud Tractate Nedarim 23a and 23b: "And he who desires that
none of his vows made during the year shall be valid, let him stand at the
beginning of the year and declare, 'Every vow which I make in the future
shall be null." (Quoted in "Judaism's Strange Gods" by Michael A. Hoffman
 II, p. 61).

So if you want a solid interpretation of the Talmud, get it from Michael
Hoffman.

I am continually researching this subject and I now have two folders thick
with additional revelations not in my book's first edition. Much of this
later data appear in the two speeches I gave at the America's Promise
Ministries Conference Sept. 16 and Sept. 17 (see the end of this message).

I'm not surprised. Who else but Christian bigots would be stupid enough to
buy his crap.

This guy is a hell of a researcher. To think, he managed to " unearth " the
Kol Nidre in a synagogue prayer book. This is fucking amazing. What a genius.
A Christian Identity scholar of the highest Order.

For those of you who are planning to vote for Gore because of the
consequences of a Republican victory, here is a portrait of the democratic
vice-presidential candidate, by Dr. Manning Marable, posted on the Black
Radical Congress list. As Dr. Marable points out, the Democrats have
adopted the Republican philosophy, and sometimes lead the charge, with Joe
Lieberman positioned on the far right wing of the Democratic party. For
those of you who would like to vote for a Jewish vice-presidential

Native American activist is Jewish on her mother's side, and got much of her
political training from her mother and grandmother. She is what I consider

[CTRL] PriceWaterhouse monitoring slammed in BusinessWeek

2000-09-29 Thread Nurev Ind Research

-Caveat Lector-

Subject: [usas] PriceWaterhouse monitoring slammed in BusinessWeek

Inside a Chinese Sweatshop: "A Life of Fines and Beating"
Wal-Mart's self-policing in the Chun Si factory was a disaster. What kind of
monitoring system works?

Liu Zhang (not his real name) was apprehensive about taking a job at the Chun
Si Enterprise Handbag Factory in Zhongshan, a booming city in Guangdong
Province in southern China, where thousands of factories churn out goods for
Western companies. Chun Si, which made Kathie Lee Gifford handbags sold by
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) as well as handbags sold by Kansas-based
Payless ShoeSource Inc. (PSS), advertised decent working conditions and a fair
salary. But word among migrant workers in the area was that managers there
demanded long hours of their workers and sometimes hit them. Still, Liu, a
32-year-old former farmer and construction worker from far-off Henan
province, was desperate for work. A factory job would give him living quarters
and the temporary-residence permit internal migrants need to avoid being
locked
up by police in special detention centers. So in late August, 1999, he signed
up.

Liu quickly realized that the factory was even worse than its reputation. Chun
Si,
owned by Chun Kwan, a Macau businessman, charged workers $15 a month
for food and lodging in a crowded dorm--a crushing sum given the $22 Liu
cleared his first month. What's more, the factory gave Liu an expired
temporary-resident permit; and in return, Liu had to hand over his personal
identification card. This left him a virtual captive. Only the local police
near the
factory knew that Chun Si issued expired cards, Liu says, so workers risked
arrest if they ventured out of the immediate neighborhood.

HALF A CENT. Liu also found that Chun Si's 900 workers were locked in the
walled factory compound for all but a total of 60 minutes a day for meals.
Guards regularly punched and hit workers for talking back to managers or even
for walking too fast, he says. And they fined them up to $1 for infractions
such as
taking too long in the bathroom. Liu left the factory for good in December,
after
he and about 60 other workers descended on the local labor office to protest
Chun Si's latest offenses: requiring cash payments for dinner and a phony
factory
it set up to dupe Wal-Mart's auditors. In his pocket was a total of $6 for
three
months of 90-hour weeks--an average of about one-half cent an hour. ''Workers
there face a life of fines and beating,'' says Liu. Chun Kwan couldn't be
reached,
but his daughter, Selina Chun, one of the factory managers, says ''this is not
true,
none of this.'' She concedes that Chun Si did not pay overtime but says few
other
factories do, either. In a face-to-face interview in August, she also admitted
that
workers have tried to sue Chun Si.

Liu's Dickensian tale stands in stark contrast to the reassurances that
Wal-Mart,
Payless, and other U.S. companies give American consumers that their goods
aren't produced under sweatshop conditions. Since 1992, Wal-Mart has
required its suppliers to sign a code of basic labor standards. After exposes
in
the mid-1990s of abuses in factories making Kathie Lee products, which the
chain carries, Wal-Mart and Kathie Lee both began hiring outside auditing
firms
to inspect supplier factories to ensure their compliance with the code. Many
other companies that produce or sell goods made in low-wage countries do
similar self-policing, from Toys 'R' Us to Nike and Gap. While no company
suggests that its auditing systems are perfect, most say they catch major
abuses
and either force suppliers to fix them or yank production.

What happened at Chun Si suggests that these auditing systems can miss serious
problems--and that self-policing allows companies to avoid painful public
revelations about them. Allegations about Chun Si first surfaced this May in a
report by the National Labor Committee (NLC), a small anti-sweatshop group in
New York that in 1997 exposed Kathie Lee's connection to labor violations in
Central America. For several months, Wal-Mart repeatedly denied any
connection to Chun Si. Wal-Mart and Kathie Lee even went so far as to pass
out a press release when the report came out dismissing it as ''lies'' and
insisting
that they never had ''any relationship with a company or factory by this name
anywhere in the world.''

But in mid-September, after a three-month BUSINESS WEEK investigation that
involved a visit to the factory, tracking down ex-Chun Si workers, and
obtaining
copies of records they had smuggled out of the factory, Wal-Mart conceded that
it had produced the Kathie Lee bags there until December, 1999. Wal-Mart
Vice-President of Corporate Affairs Jay Allen now says that Wal-Mart denied
using Chun Si because it was ''defensive'' about the sweatshop issue.

Wal-Mart Director of Corporate Compliance Denise Fenton says its auditors,
PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PWC) and Cal Safety Compliance Corp., had
inspected Chun Si

I don't think we can go to a system where there is NO regulation, because it is just
asking for trouble from those who would be unscrupulous regardless. In matters of
health I think it is advisable to have truly independant experts evaluate the
effectiveness and safety of all products, but that the people should STILL have the
last word as to whether they want to try it or not. In other words I think that if
you want to take a drug that the FDA says is ineffective or possibly dangerous then I
don't think they have the right to keep it from you or you from taking it. At the
same time there does need to be some measure of control over claims, manufacturing
protocals, standardization, truth in labelling, etc.

Regulation - which is based on force and fear - undermines the
moral base of business dealings. It becomes cheaper to bribe a
building inspector than to meet his standards of construction.
A fly-by-night securities operator can quickly meet all the
S.E.C. requirements, gain the inference of respectability, and
proceed to fleece the public. In an unregulated economy, the
operator would have had to spend a number of years in reputable
dealings before he could earn a position of trust sufficient to
induce a number of investors to place funds with him. Protection
of the consumer by regulation is thus illusory. -- Alan Greenspan

AROUND THE CAMPFIRE THIS WEEK

It's been a wild month. I am so impressed with all the people who have come
to our site and have been supportive. I have also learned so much from your
emails.

Seems like every day someone writes telling me of another United
Way or a local government casting out our boys. Telling them they're not
welcome anymore because they believe in living an upright life and being
chaste, clean and reverent, because they want to freely choose their
morality.

I have great hope when I read about people like Vernon Robinson
(http://www.saveourscouts.com/news.html), a local politician who knew what
mattered and stood up for our boys in North Carolina. He fought back and
WON! We need to thank him for his courage and commitment to doing the right
thing.

This war is far from over. We need to help our fellow citizens who are
fighting on the local level. Next week I am going to South Florida to bring
a check for $1500.00 to the Scouts there. I hope we can also put together a
rally of support for the families and Scouters to let them know a lot of
people are behind them. If anyone from South Florida is reading this please
email me ([EMAIL PROTECTED] )and let's work out a rally together.

In fact, we have received a great deal of response from people interested in
having a local chapter of Save Our Scouts in their communities. We had
already decided that we needed local chapters of Save Our Scouts but we
would like to begin with State Divisions. Please e-mail me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] if you are interested in volunteering to head up a
State Division.

As we sit around our cyber campfire I hope many of you will be willing to
chime in on our scouts. I would be happy to post your comments on Around the
Campfire I'll even post the other side's commentary as long as it's
thoughtful and non-abusive.

Keep up the fight everyone.

Remember, do a good turn daily!

THIS WEEK'S CRITICAL ACTION ITEM!

When the ACLU and LAMBDA lost their lawsuit designed to force the Boy Scouts
of America to abandon its "morally straight" standards, one of the ACLU
attorneys in the case, Matt Coles, said that the Boy Scouts are "getting
left behind where America is going. People are going to turn to their local
governments and say, 'This is a pack of bigots. Don't give them special
treatment.'"

And, certainly the since that decision upholding the Boy Scouts' First
Amendment rights, the other side has declared war in local communities all
over America. However, the American Civil Rights Union (ACRU) which will
fight the far left ACLU in court battles, has set up the Scouting Legal
Defense Fund, which is headed by former Reagan Attorney General Edwin Meese.

Their new website, www.defendscouting.com , has timely, and important
questions to ask the Presidential candidates: Do you support the Supreme
Court Court's decision in upholding the First Amendment Rights of the Boy
Scouts of America? Specifically, do you support the right of organizations
such as the Scouts to exclude homosexuals?

The Scouting Legal Defense Fund is trying to put the Presidential and Vice
Presidential candidates clearly on the record in the upcoming debates on
whether they support the Scouts. They need our help to do it.

They are organizing a campaign to get thousands of Americans to urge the
press to question the candidates in the debate whether they support the
recent Supreme Court decision that upheld the Scouts' right to expel an
openly homosexual scoutmaster.

The Supreme Court upheld the Scouts by only a 5-4 decision and the next
president may name as many as 3 replacement Justices. A new Court could
easily reverse that decision. That means that it is critical to all of us
who support Scouting that this issue be clearly addressed by the candidates.

We urge everyone to go to www.defendscouting.com and make this request. We
also urge you to get as many others as you can to do it.

Time is short. The first presidential debate is Oct. 3rd and the only vice
presidential debate is Oct. 5th. Go to www.defendscouting.com and add your
name to the list of people who want the candidates to be asked which side
they will defend-the Boy Scouts or those using intimidation and financial
pressure to destroy Boy Scouts.

We believe the Boy Scouts are their first target for "political
correctness." If they succeed in forcing the Boy Scouts to abandon
principle, the Churches and the Constitution will

I can't WAIT to hear Lloyd's take on this!

Freely as ever, SEK3

[rest all quote] Last week, Chase Manhattan, the Rockefeller's old
bank, announced that it
was buying J.P Morgan Co. in a stock deal that united two of the
nation's biggest banks and continued the reshaping of the rapidly
consolidating financial services industry.

Yes, this could mean the convergence of Anglo-Rockefeller power
finally as perhaps indicated by the joint Balkans policy after
considerable Anglo-Rockefeller conflict during the initial part
of the Clinton Adminperhaps a very significant compromise
has been reached. On the other hand, perhaps Morgan failed
the Anglos and they will now utilize an alternative tool as the focus
of their influence in America..? I did note that Chairman of Mogan
suddenly resigned perhaps indicating he had failed in his leadership and was
forced to let Chase take-over.

And then we have the sudden criticism of Chase for supporting
slavery and Nazism...are Anglo agents redoubling their attack
on Chase just as Chase gobbles one of their traditional organs?
Co-incidence or planned revenge?

Lloyd

But, even as Chase prepared the takeover, the bank's past returned to
haunt it. Documents brought to light by journalist John Friedman in
the
upcoming issue of The Nation show that Chase aided slavery in the
U.S.
as
two of its predecessor banks worked with an insurance company to
insure
slave owners against "property" loss. This makes Chase, as far as can
be
determined, the first company whose forerunners have been identified
as
aiding both the perpetrators of the destruction of the Jews in Europe
and
those responsible for the enslavement of Africans and their
descendants
in
America. Read the whole story exclusively at:

"All vows, prohibitions, oaths, consecrations or equivalent terms that we
may vow, swear, consecrate, or prohibit upon ourselves from this Yom Kippur
until the next Yom Kippur, may it come upon us for good - regarding them
all, we repudiate them henceforth. They all will be abandoned, cancelled,
null and void; they will be without power and without standing. Our vows
  shall not be valid vows; our prohibitions shall not be valid prohibitions;
and our oaths shall not be valid oaths."

I don't know what he thinks this means, do any of you?

Now here's the clincher: we have from today until Oct. 8 to take this
information and hector the media, the clergy, the professors and the
Democrats (and even revisionist publications and allies who thus far have
  been silent).

Keep the message pithy and brutally direct. Ask a simple question which
only

Oh I get it now. Lieberman has found a Jewish legalistic way out of a secular
oath which means he can't be trusted. This presumes that Jewish law overrides
secular law. This presumes wrong. But what can one expect from the idiot who
brought the " Khazar " theory to half baked bigots?

So you DO get it...and this sums up the entire jist of this article...like
Hoffman or not this is a valid and interesting point!

Even though this could actually happen, it would not be his intent. This is

Labor is in the pocket of the White House. They are giving away the store.
The opposition parties are pissed. Sharon is exploiting that anger. Labor will

I hope to God (and I mean that VERY literally) that this

We've been moving in this direction for quite some time. The right would claim it was

 Military Trained for Police Ops

A retired colonel charges that the U.S. military's elite units are being
trained in civilian areas in America to take over the role of domestic police.

 Exclusive to The SPOTLIGHT

 By Mike Blair

A high-ranking retired Special Operations Command officer told The SPOTLIGHT
that elite military units have been undertaking urban warfare maneuvers in
cities and towns across the United States in preparation for assuming the
 duties of U.S. law enforcement.

The retired colonel confirmed for the first time that the mysterious training
engaged in by U.S. Army Special Forces and Delta Force, Navy Seals, Marines
Force Recon and U.S. Air Force Air Com mandos is intended for domestic
 operations.

Use of U.S. troops to enforce civilian law is a gross violation of the Posse
Comitatus Act, legislation passed during the Rutherford B. Hayes
administration prohibiting the U.S. military from engaging in domestic law
 enforcement, and the Constitution.

The officer, a retired colonel, told The SPOTLIGHT that the Pentagon has been
purposely misleading the public by explaining that these exercises are urban
warfare training to prepare American elite troops for missions in foreign
lands, such as hostage rescue operations at a be sieged U.S. embassy or other
 U.S. interest centers.

The colonel said, however, the fact is the troops are primarily training for
police-type activities, particularly in the United States.

Two units have been heavily involved in the training: the Army's Delta Force
and the Night Stalkers, the latter group being a unit of highly-trained
helicopter pilots, who ferry the Delta Force troopers into action and have
been responsible for flying low, at almost tree-top or roof-top level, over
 civilian areas.

The colonel, who spoke with The SPOTLIGHT on the condition of anonymity, has
been supported in his revelations by disclosures to the Internet web site,
World Net Daily, by former Night Stalker, Captain Jeff Norgrove.

"These aren't really military exercises," Norgrove said. "They are SWAT
training. The Army will never admit that to you, but that's what it is.''

Last year, Delta Force and the Night Stalkers were involved in a
controversial exercise in Kingsville, Tex., where the SWAT (Special Weapons
and Tactics) troops used live ammunition and explosives to conduct their
 training.

Special Operations Command officials at Fort Bragg, N.C., insist that only
"training ammunition" was used during the exercise in Kingsville and other
 American communities.

A number of retired military officers have come forward to insist that Army
claims of the use of only training ammunition are untrue.

"They really think we're so stupid that we can't figure this out," Norgrove
 said.

Most of the Night Stalkers and the Delta Force troops, according to Norgrove
and the retired colonel, are young and not fully aware of what is going on.

"They just do what they are told," Norgrove explained. "It's exciting and the
 pay is very good."

The colonel told The SPOTLIGHT that the young Delta Force soldiers and Night
Stalkers involved in the activities are heavily indoctrinated.

"They would not have any hesitation to shoot at their fellow Americans if
they were ordered to do so and felt that it was the right thing to do under a
 given circumstance," the colonel said.

"They are part of what the military refers to as 'the warrior class' and they
are tasked to take out the enemy, and that could mean to them, under the
right circumstances, either foreigners or their own countrymen," the former
 Special Operations officer explained.

While the FAA regulations require air craft to fly well above the tops of
houses and buildings, the Night Stalk ers are criss-crossing American cities
and towns at extremely low levels, many contend, endangering the civilian
 population.

In Kingsville, as an example, a helicopter struck the top of a telephone
pole, causing a fire near a home.

The Delta Force and Night Stalkers do not even wear standard military
uniforms. Instead, just like any SWAT team, they are garbed in black
uniforms, complete with black helmets and face shields. They also wear
bulletproof body armor and are usually discharged from the Night Stalkers'
helicopters wielding Ger man-made Hechler and Koch 9-mm machine guns.

70 to 100 people remain in jail in Prague.

Serious human rights abuses have occurred and are continuing to occur, and
have been substantiated by others released from jail: arrestees were
forced to walk between two lines of police upon arriving at the detention
center and beaten, including some who teeth were knocked out with iron
bars.

Right now, the best thing to do is contact the Bacava jail, asking for Mr.
Verulzi, at 011-42-0182395305.

INPEG will be putting a webpage up soon about how to support the jailed
people, so check for updates at inpeg.ecn.cz

2. Corporate news reports put the number of demonstrators at 5000. This is
absolutely false, and reflects only "Group BLUE" (composed of Blac Bloc,
etc.) that came the closest to the convention center. A more realistic
estimate of the total number of demonstrators is around 15 to 20,000.

3. In solidarity with our prisoners in Prague, the Czech embassies have
been occupied in London, Barcelona, and elsewhere. Let your local Czech
embassies know that we want our people treated humanely and FREED!

4. The proponents of globalization are attempting to make it look like it
is us who do not want dialogue (despite the many attempts of the movement
against globalization to start dialogue). I am sending out press releases
today inviting the bastards to a public debate, and I suggest everyone
else do the same. Let's all dig up those nuggets like Lawrence Summer's
memorandum and throw it back at them.

Bob, I am not picking on you but you are posting some interesting stuff.

The things that I notice again about this 'essay" is its rhetorical style.
Even while "educating" the reader about hegel it is continuing a divisive
factor and keeping the "left" and the "right" as seperate forces and then
espousing correctness of purpose to the right along with very prejudical
opions about the "left." Blaming the "left" for hegel, even. With a populace
becoming more 'enlightened about conspiracy issues, I believe we shall
continue to see pieces such as these. Velveetizing the "revolution." Because
even we do not realize it we are in the middle of a revolution. The Internet
is a revolution

Our republic though battered still stands and as more and more of us
understand and stand-up and encourage others, change will happen . . . and
for the better.

We are being oppressed and lied to both on the left and the right. the
hoodwink has been going on for generations. We happen to as the Chinese say.
"Live in interesting times." All will be known and all that, we are living
through the cusp of a yuga, the hindi might say. Now is the time for all good
men and women to come to the aid of the country.

If the juvenile frat boys can keep us in "hardened sides" in boxes hating
whomever we are supposed to, then control can be bought with a few press
pieces. And it has been shown to work from faking war to econmic advantage.

somone with absolute power could go out and slog every person of a certain
ethnic group, or supposed deviance or perceived political persuasion, what
would that create?

People of the lft are no more monolith than folks of the right. I strongly
suggest both sides are being "played."

Look at the early history of JBS and how much info came out, parts of the
truth but wrong enough to be discredited. Some real good truth and if ya
follow the money, Like one intel agent working in the states on
creating"cultural/social movements" said, "I ain't seen nothing work that
didn't have something big [political angle] behind it."

Enough of my rambling. And Bob, I am not picking on you honest. I just find
these very interesting. TV keeps so many of us seperate but thinking we
"know" what others are like. But see when ya play country gigs, blues gigs,
RB gigs, RR gigs and many jobs ya get to notice some things and ya meet a
few folks all across the map. It is not the left vs the right. It is us-peons
vs the elites, especiall the multi-generational cults of the world. Do camels
pass through the eye of a needle?

I would like to jump in here and say that this is an issue that has come up here
repeatedly, over and over again on this list. I have tried on more than one occasion
to discourage personal attacks on list. Most people here are aware of this, and abide
by it. Why can't we all remember that this is a list to exchange information and not
a format for meting out your personal rancor to others who subscribe. Sometimes it is
more prudent to keep your mouth shut than to continue a fruitless thread that succeeds
only in attacking someone's PERSON. Please, if Kris didn't have to spend half his day
trying to tame some adolescent bickering and the list was not so cluttered by endless
jabbering and RE:'s
about useless items that have nothing to do with conspiracy theory THEN perhaps
everyone would have an opportunity to participate and more information could be
exchanged to everyones greater benefit.

The symbiotic relationship between CIA covert operations and missionary work
is extremely well documented in the fabulous and impossible to find book
"The Will Be Done, The Conquest of the Amazon" by Gerard Colby et al.

Including detailed sections on Southeast Asia it describes in detail how
Christian zealots, with bibles and CIA funded airplanes opened up the
jungles for Christ, translated the indigenous languages, made dictionaries
and then opened the way for industrialization, genocide, covert operations
and drug smuggling in the name of God. It happened all throughout Laos,
Vietnam and Thailand. Wherever the missionaries went the CIA was right
behind. Praise God!

The tradition lingers. Cele Castillo has photos of CIA agents masquerading
as Catholic Priests in Guatemala and El Salvador. How else could the death
squads ID their targets so accurately?

Thousands say "Smash the IMF"

TANKS CAN'T STOP PROTESTS IN PRAGUE AS
THOUSANDS SAY, : "SMASH THE IMF!"

By Bill Dorr
Prague, Czech Republic

They came to wreck and destroy. From Washington and Wall
Street, Frankfurt, Tokyo, the Bourse in Paris and the City of
London, silk-suited bankers, financiers and economists descended
on this beautiful Central European city to consort with and dictate to
finance ministers from over 100 countries at the annual meeting of
the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

Behind the bankers' smooth professions of concern for the 2 billion
people on this planet who go to bed hungry was an ill-concealed
hidden agenda-cut wages, raise prices, shut down plants, schools,
hospitals, eliminate jobs. And make sure that interest continues to
flow from the world's poorest countries to the world's richest banks.

But these global economic tyrants could not carry out their agenda
in peace or silence. They had to hide behind armies of police and
walls of tanks as thousands of protesters from all over Europe filled
the cobblestoned streets of Prague Sept. 26.

The bankers had to travel to their hotels in special guarded subway
cars as activists fought armored police on bridges and intersections
leading to the Prague Congress Center. IMF-WB delegates who
dared travel the streets in chartered buses found themselves
surrounded by angry crowds.

DEMOCRACY, CAPITALIST STYLE

Czech president Vaclav Havel sent tanks into the streets of Prague
to intimidate the anti-corporate protesters. He sent 15,000 cops and
2,000 soldiers to gas them, beat them and spray them with water
cannon. Teams of FBI agents sent from the United States
supervised the Czech police forces.

Havel, a former anti-communist dissident and darling of the Western
corporate media, is a longtime servant of capital. After the
overthrow of socialism in Czechoslovakia in 1989, he rented out the
wall of his home to Campbell's Soup for an advertisement.

Massive police force managed to stop three columns of protesters
from actually reaching the IMF-WB meeting. But it failed to
intimidate the marchers, who repeatedly charged police lines in an
effort to break through and confront the bankers. On the Gottwald
Bridge, demonstrators fought the police hand to hand for hours amid
chants of "No pasaran."

  'CAPITALISM, A SHAME AND DISGRACE'

The rest of Prague belonged to the demonstrators, and anti-
capitalist slogans in a dozen languages echoed through its winding
streets: "Smash the IMF," "Cancel the debt," and "Capitalism, a
shame and disgrace."

The Prague metro was shut down for a day so the bankers could
travel without being confronted, and many shuttered businesses bore
signs saying "Closed Until the IMF Protests Are Over."

Throughout the night, street fighting continued in and around Wenceslas
Square. Demonstrators surrounded the state opera, forcing the IMF and
World Bank to cancel a dinner they had planned to hold there.

MASS ARREST OF CZECH CITIZENS

Late in the night, having failed to break the protests, police began
rounding up and arresting ordinary Czech citizens on streets around
the city center. While the corporate media claimed the majority of
protesters were foreign, of the 422 people arrested, 392 were
Czech citizens. They are being held in the city of Plzen, far from
Prague, and have so far not been allowed to speak to lawyers.

Tuesday's battle was the climax of a week of protests. These
included a 3,000-strong Stop the IMF march on Sept. 23,
organized by the Communist Union of Youth and backed by trade
unions and the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia.

That same day there as a 1,000-strong antifascist march to counter
a rally by the neo-Nazi National Alliance. Racist skinheads who try
and terrorize Roma and other people of color found the tables
turned as protesters chased them through
