Art imitates politics: Chute and Kubiak get reel

By Jess Kilby

There have been documentary films made about political campaigns before
(The War Room, for example). There have been Hollywood productions that
ape the process and its inherent moral ambiguity (Bulworth, The
Candidate). But rarely (if ever) has a docu-drama been made about a real
political campaign that was initiated for the sole purpose of making a
movie about a political campaign.

In short: Carolyn Chute is running for governor. This isn't exactly
breaking news - hell, the Waterboro Public Library makes note of it on
their website, and DC's Political Report dutifully lists Chute amongst
the rest of the third-party candidates in Maine's 2002 gubernatorial
race (following pastor Steven Farssaci [sic] as author/militia member
Carolyn Chute and linking to a quaint 1996 Salon article for more
information, rather than to an official campaign site.)

What's news (or at least new) is the fact that Chute has a running mate,
in fellow anti-corporate activist David Kubiak. And that the two are
making a movie called Countercoup about their run as co-candidates for
the highest office in the state, with (among other activities) mock town
meetings in each county where residents will be asked to pretend to
talk about their concerns for a common future.

The whole thing is a bit tongue-in-cheek, you see - in that
semi-serious, populist way for which Chute and Kubiak are known. As
Kubiak explains via email, all events are staged for the movie, but
attract 'real' citizens, 'real' journalists, and 'real' public attention
to [the campaign] issues (e.g., the corporate coup d'etat in Augusta and
Washington, the corporate takeover of our mass media, and Maine's urgent
need to secede from Corporate America's political control). Chute and
Kubiak will be attempting to collect enough signatures and $5 donations
to qualify for Clean Election money, the better to add more realism to
the film.

How they'll pull off a two-person ticket is a mystery, because, as Domna
Gattis of the Secretary of State's office points out, you can't really
do that. (Candidates can only put one name on each application for Clean
Election funding; likewise for the rest of Maine's electoral paperwork.)

Putting the question of whether Chute and Kubiak will succeed in
flouting Maine's election laws aside, there's at least one good reason
for catching Countercoup when (and if) it's released: our heroes are
strangely vindicated in an 11th month/11th hour surprise ending. Pass
the popcorn.

[CTRL] Be VERY Afraid

2002-01-15 Thread Chris Case

-Caveat Lector-

KANDAHAR — U.S. Military officials have been balking at recent
allegations that armed forces have not been doing enough in the search
for Osama bin Laden, who is believed to have fled the caves of Tora Bora
sometime during the recent wave of airborne cave-bombings.

The cause for the sudden disappearance of the man believed to have
masterminded the destruction of the World Trade towers and a wing of the
Pentagon is now understood in chilling clarity.

The thing we had long feared to be true has been confirmed, said a
visibly shaken President Bush. Bin Laden has found the One Ring,
allowing him the ability to pass invisibly through any land or
territory, even into the very heart of our command.

The ring, which last sat on the finger of Senator Strom Thurmon, is
believed to have fallen off at some point during his last term and found
its way to Afghanistan.

Bush added: The evil will within the ring will grant bin Laden seeming
immortality but at a terrible price, manipulating and twisting his soul
into ever-darkening circles of evil until his very being begins to Fade,
leaving only a wraith, incapable of any emotion save for the indomitable
urge to sup on human souls.

While prolonged use of the One Ring almost always results in the same
fate, the normal life span of the ring-bearer is lengthened
extraordinarily, allowing for a far greater scope of evil-doing.

Washington, Jan 14th
In a move widely seen as calculated to benefit supporters and associates
in the energy industry, President Bush today announced his intention to
sign an executive order authorising a unilateral across-the-board increase
of one degree Celcius in the international boiling point of water.
The strongest protests have come from Switzerland, whose high standard
of living has often been attributed to its lofty altitude and the
consequent tepidity of its coffee, and from Israel, where the anticipated
increase in revenues for oil-producing nations has prompted Mossad to approve
an undisclosed adjustment in the consistency of export pretzels.

[CTRL] Fnord (fnord)

2001-12-19 Thread Chris Case
-Caveat Lector-

``Very nice,'' I said. ``But why did you bring me up here?''
``It's time for you to see the fnords,'' he replied.
Then I woke up in bed and it was the next morning. I made
breakfast in a pretty nasty mood, wondering if I'd seen the fnords,
whatever the hell they were, in the hours he had blacked out, or if I
would see them as soon as I went out into the street. I had some pretty
gruesome ideas about them, I must admit. Creatures with three eyes and
tentacles, survivors from Atlantis, who walked among us, invisible due
to some form of mind shield, and did hideous work for the Illuminati. It
was unnerving to contemplate, and I finally gave in to my fears and
peeked out the window, thinking it might be better to see them from a
distance first. Nothing. Just ordinary sleepy people, heading for their
busses and subways. That calmed me a little, so I set out the toast and
coffee and fetched the New York Times from the hallway. I turned the
radio to WBAI and caught some good Vivaldi, sat down, grabbed a piece of
toast and started skimming the first page.
   Then I saw the fnords.
The feature story involved another of the endless squabbles
between Russia and the U.S. in the UN General Assembly, and after each
direct quote from the Russian delegate I read a quite distinct
``Fnord!'' The second lead was about a debate in congress on getting the
troops out of costa Rica; every argument presented by Senator Bacon was
followed by another ``Fnord!'' At the bottom of the page was a Times
depth-type study of the growing pollution problem and the increasing use
of gas masks among New Yorkers; the most distressing chemical facts were
interpolated with more ``Fnords.''
Suddenly I saw Hagbard's eyes burning into me and heard his
voice: ``Your heart will remain calm. Your adrenalin gland will remain
calm. Calm, all-over calm. You will not panic. you will look at the
fnord and see the it. You will not evade it or black it out. you will
stay calm and face it.'' And further back, way back: my first-grade
teacher writing FNORD on the blackboard, while a wheel with a spiral
design turned and turned on his desk, turned and turned, and his voice
droned on, IF YOU DON'T SEE THE FNORD IT CAN'T EAT YOU, DON'T SEE THE
FNORD, DON'T SEE THE FNORD . . .
I looked back at the paper and still saw the fnords. This was one
step beyond Pavlov, I realized. The first conditioned reflex was to
experience the panic reaction (the activation syndrome, it's technically
called) whenever encountering the word ``fnord.'' The second conditioned
reflex was to black out what happened, including the word itself, and
just to feel a general low-grade emergency without knowing why. And the
third step, of course, was to attribute this anxiety to the news
stories, which were bad enough in themselves anyway. Of course, the
essence of control is fear. The fnords produced a whole population
walking around in chronic low-grade emergency, tormented by ulcers,
dizzy spells, nightmares, heart palpitations and all the other symptoms
of too much adrenalin. All my left-wing arrogance and contempt for my
countrymen melted, and I felt a genuine pity. No wonder the poor
bastards believe anything they're told, walk through pollution and
overcrowding without complaining, watch their son hauled off to endless
wars and butchered, never protest, never fight back, never show much
happiness or eroticism or curiosity or normal human emotion, live with
perpetual tunnel vision, walk past a slum without seeing either the
human misery it contains or the potential threat it poses to their
security . . .
Then I got a hunch, and turned quickly to the advertisements. it
was as I expected: no fnords. That was part of the gimmick, too: only in
consumption, endless consumption, could they escape the amorphous threat
of the invisible fnords. I kept thinking about it on my way to the
office. If I pointed out a fnord to somebody who hadn't been
deconditioned, as Hagbard deconditioned me, what would he or she say?
They'd probably read the word before or after it. ``No this word,'' I'd
say. And they would again read an adjacent word. But would their panic
level rise as the threat came closer to consciousness? I preferred not
to try the experiment; it might have ended with a psychotic fugue in the
subject. The conditioning, after all, went back to grade school. No
wonder we all hate those teachers so much: we have a dim, masked memory
of what they've done to us in converting us into good and faithful
servants for the Illuminati.

WORST KEPT SECRETS OF THE BUMBLING BEAR (Part 1 of 2)
by Jared Israel

Below is an article from the 'San Francisco Bay Guardian', entitled, 'The
CIA's Worst-Kept Secret.' It discusses some recently unclassified CIA files.
These documents, 18,000 pages in all, confirm that U.S. intelligence
recruited and protected Nazis starting at the end of World War II.

I am posting and writing about this article for two reasons. First, it
includes some useful information about the Nazi-CIA marriage. Second, it
presents that information from a perspective that I consider at once
mistaken and widespread; hence worth discussing.

The article was written by Martin Lee. Mr. Lee argues that after World War
II, Nazi spies duped the U.S. into hiring them, thereby protecting
themselves and their networks from prosecution.

He cites the example of General Reinhard Gehlen. Gehlen had been chief of
Nazi intelligence in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. According to Mr.
Lee, Gehlen fooled spymaster Allen Dulles, who later became Director of the
CIA, in the following way:

Gehlen was quickly spirited off to Fort Hunt, Va. The image he projected
during 10 months of negotiations at Fort Hunt was, to use a bit of espionage
parlance, a legend --one that hinged on Gehlen's false claim that he was
never really a Nazi, but was dedicated, above all, to fighting Communism.
Those who bit the bait included future CIA director Allen Dulles, who became
Gehlen's biggest supporter among American policy wonks. (From the text below)

There's a bit of a problem here.

Starting more than a decade earlier, Allen Dulles, a leading diplomat and
spy, and his brother, John Foster, a Wall Street insider, had created a
financial-intelligence apparatus to assist the Nazis. So Dulles had
long-standing, friendly relations with Nazis. That being the case, why would
Dulles be upset if he 'learned' that Gehlen (a top Nazi spy) was a Nazi? (1)

Moreover, Gehlen had not been some cloistered spy. His job had not been
simply to coordinate the gathering of information. He had been a key leader
of the work of fascist groups in the occupied East, such as the Iron Guard
in Romania, the Latvian Vanagis and the Croatian Ustashe. These groups
committed the most unimaginably brutal atrocities against 'Untermenschen',
Jews, 'gypsies', Serbs and other Slavs and Orthodox Christians, as well as
against anti-Nazis, both Communist and non-Communist, including various
Nationalist groups, which resisted the Nazis. Gehlen was a leading war
criminal.

Did Allen Dulles know all this? Of course he knew all this. He was a U.S.
spymaster with almost three decades experience and he had worked with the
Nazi leadership for two decades. Dulles arranged to have Gehlen secretly
brought to the U.S. precisely so that the Russians wouldn't get hold of him
and put him on trial for war crimes and hang him.

Once they had Gehlen safely in the U.S., Allen Dulles and other top U.S.
Intelligence operatives met with Gehlen and planned a nightmare creation: a
vast European spying-and-subversion apparatus, controlled by Washington but
staffed by hundreds and then thousands of Nazi war criminals. The Nazis may
have lost the war but Nazism had found new life. (6)

Since Allen Dulles knew that Gehlen commanded an army of monstrous war
criminals in Eastern Europe and Russia, what is the significance of Dulles'
supposed (though frankly unbelievable) belief that Gehlen was not a Nazi?

Mr. Lee's suggestion that Dulles' rescue and empowerment of Gehlen was
somehow less monstrous because he was 'fooled' about Gehlen's Nazi beliefs
is typical of the way the mass media has been whitewashing American foreign
policy since 1945.

According to this reasoning, it is a crime if Nazis (or Islamist terrorists)
go out and commit atrocities on their own. But if they commit atrocities at
the behest of American leaders who are a) naive about who these Nazis (or
Islamist terrorists) are and b) are only using these Nazis or terrorists in
pursuit of good American values, then it is OK. This treats the American
foreign policy establishment as if it were some perpetual teenager who may
have fallen in with a bad crowd, but heck, he'll grow out of it.

Very few of us will ever read the declassified Nazi-CIA documents. Articles
like Mr. Lee's from the 'San Francisco Bay Guardian', a left-leaning
newspaper, must inform our view. Throughout the article, Mr. Lee portrays
Washington as naive, trapped by a Cold War mentality into recruiting Nazis
(or, as he suggests at the end of his article, by recruiting too many of
them...you know, Nazis are OK, but only if

Hampshire College Students, Faculty, Staff Condemn 'War On Terror'
Hampshire Students for a Peaceful Response
 Michael Sherrard
 Kai Newkirk
 12-8-1

AMHERST, MA - The students, faculty, and staff of Hampshire
College have voted to condemn the War on Terrorism and
propose alternative solutions. The vote, which was won by a margin
of 693-121 (with 11 abstaining or ambiguous votes), is believed to
the first such decision by a college community in the United States.
(A majority of the students, faculty, and staff participated in the
 vote.)

Our community has spoken, said Michael Sherrard, an organizer
with Hampshire Students for a Peaceful Response, which sponsored
the vote and authored the anti-war resolution. We refuse to fall
into silent support for an unjust war that kills innocents overseas,
and threatens our safety and civil liberties at home.

However, organizers were quick to defend the right to free
expression of those who disagreed with the vote.

As a diverse community of strong individuals, there are some at
Hampshire who do not support our views. Even if they are in the
minority, their opinions, and rights to free expression, must be
respected. We wish that politicians and the media would extend the
same respect to those of us who oppose this unjust war, or who
happen to bear the same skin tone as Osama bin Laden, said
Donald Jackson, also a member of Students for a Peaceful
 Response.

Hampshire has a precedent for trend-setting political statements. In
the early 70s, students voted for the impeachment of President
Nixon. The college was also the first to decide to divest from
apartheid South Africa. With this vote, organizers hope to make a
similarly strong public statement, and build a movement which can
similarly change the course of U.S. foreign policy.

Students for a Peaceful Response is a multi-campus coalition in
Western Massachusetts formed in the wake of September 11, and
active in the growing nation-wide student movement against the
war. It is organized around six points of unity: mourning for the
victims of the September 11 tragedies; a call for the peaceful
pursuit of justice, rather than war and militarism; condemnation of
religious, racial, and ethnic scapegoating and bigotry; opposition to
the curtailment of civil liberties; desire to provoke discussion of the
root causes of terrorism; and recognition of global justice as the
condition for a true and lasting peace.

Full text of the statement approved by the community:

The tragic day of September 11, and the days following, have been
a time of profound suffering for people everywhere: firefighters in
New York, secretaries in Washington D.C., and farmers in
Afghanistan. One indiscriminate act of violence has been followed by
another, a pattern seriously endangering the prospects for a just
and peaceful world. In such a time of loss, we must ask ourselves -
is there a path out of this escalating cycle of violence? Yes, we can
respond to the tragedy of September 11 as a crime against
humanity, carried out by individuals, not as an act of warfare for
which a nation must be held responsible. This path would proceed
within a framework of genuine international cooperation and be
designed to bring to justice those guilty of the crime - without
destroying the lives of innocent millions. It would employ the proven
tools of transparent and conclusive investigations, diplomatic and
police efforts, and fair courts of law to achieve its goal. At home,
we can meet the immediate need for effective security through
common-sense solutions that apply fairly to everyone, while
 preserving our hard-won civil liberties.

Instead, the Bush administration has embarked upon a very different
 path - with disastrous consequences:

 * The death toll of innocent Afghan civilians killed by inevitably
 imprecise bombing is mounting.

 * The U.S. military campaign has made it impossible for international
relief organizations to deliver the food aid necessary to prevent the
starvation of millions of Afghan civilians in the winter now beginning.
The token and scattered aid efforts of the United States have been
roundly criticized as insufficient, or even counterproductive, by
such organizations. A massive humanitarian crisis remains.

 * While the Northern Alliance has forced the Taliban from power
(certainly a welcome development), they too possess a disturbing
record of human-rights violations, especially against women and
 political dissidents.

 * The current suffering in Afghanistan will only deepen the
conditions of loss and desperation which foster international
terrorism. Even the CIA has stated that strikes against Afghanistan
are 100% certain to lead to terrorist reprisals.

 * The recent U.S.A. P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act infringes upon everyone's
First and Fourth Amendment freedoms. Rights to privacy, speech,
and association remain as critical as ever and are, if

Videotape points to bin Laden's terror attack connection

US officials have obtained a videotape of Osama bin Laden
providing the strongest evidence of his connection to the
 US terrorist attacks.

In the 40-minute tape, bin Laden describes the damage
around the fallen twin towers in New York as greater than
 expected.

The tape is said to have been found in a private home in
 Jalalabad, Afghanistan.

According to the Washington Post, US officials are
debating whether and how to make it public.

While officials have said they intercepted communications
that allegedly tied bin Laden or associates to the attacks,
they have refused to release any materials, citing
 intelligence concerns.

The paper adds that some officials hope that making the
tape public could counter concern in the Muslim world that
bin Laden has been unjustly accused of involvement in the
 attacks.

One senior official who has seen a transcript of the tape,
told the Post that it makes it very clear that bin Laden not only had
advance knowledge but is proof he was responsible for
 planning.

WHITE HOUSE INSTALLS ANTI-QUESTION SHIELD AROUND ARI FLEISCHER

Fearing a barrage of press corps questions that the White House does not
want to answer, the Bush Administration has installed a high-tech
anti-question shield to protect Press Secretary Ari Fleischer, sources
confirmed today.

The multi-billion dollar shield is designed to shoot down questions that
could address what the White House feels is classified or sensitive
information. The first test of the new shield was successfully employed
today during a press briefing, intercepting and destroying a question
related to what constituted classified or sensitive information.

"This is a huge step forward in the White House communications defense

automatically responds to questions that attempt to penetrate the shield by
launching a series of pat, repetitive and purposefully vague responses.

The defense shield can respond immediately to any question fired off by
reporters by launching standard, defensive non-answers, such as "I believe
the president has made himself clear on that issue," "You'd have to talk to
the DOD (Department of Defense)," or "I'm not going to talk about
operational matters."

Critics maintain that the shield may not be foolproof and that some tough
questions could get through. Asked whether President Bush had concerns that
a serious question could penetrate the shield, Fleischer said, "I believe
the president has made himself clear on that issue."

[CTRL] CYBERPUNKTUATIONS

2001-11-24 Thread Chris Case

-Caveat Lector-

Current events are making many of the insights and attitudes of the
Cyberpunk movement of the early 90s seem as prophetic now as they seemed
then. Here is an article I published (more an editing job than anything,
really, excising such phrases as Prigoninic cathexis) in 1990.
Wade through the pretentious language and perhaps you'll see what I mean...

Chris

***

CYBERPUNKTUATIONS

The following is composed of extracts from an article by MARK DOWNHAM on
Cyberpunk which appeared in London's VAGUE magazine . A disorganized
mixture of clear apercus and tortuous prolixity, it lends itself to
rearrangement and bowdlerisation. Here are a few of his more interesting
statements.

Chris

 OF CYBERPUNK FICTION

Cyberpunk began as a loose generational nexus of writers swapping
letters, manuscripts, ideas.

Cyberpunk crunches together neuro- and physical chemistry, genetic
biology, structural linguistics, cybernetics, bio-technology and cyborg
engineering into a fantastic series of fictions.

There is no typical cyberpunk, although the general project does have
central themes, tenets, and topics. I'd say it is an eighties milieu -
nineties, post-2001 would equally do - it is a product of the interzone
between hard technologies/sciences and nihilo-romanticist surrealism. Its
precursors are Michael Moorcock, Langdon Jones, Harlan Ellison, Samuel
Delaney, Norman Spinrad, Brian Aldiss, John Varley, Philip. K. Dick,
Alfred Bester, the strange pulsing entropies of Thomas Pynchon, the
panic-theory of Baudrillard, the Situationist International, Larry Niven,
Roger Zelaney, H.G. Wells, the programming phenomena control-data buzz
of Guy Debord, and the seminal genius of J.G. Ballard.

Cyberpunk was essentially initiated by J.G.Ballard in The Atrocity
Exhibition. Ballard details the collapse of a landscape through which lines
of deterritorialisation have proceeded to absolute tolerances, fractal
zones in which sheer contiguity replaces syntax...

Ballard's work is an attempt to grasp the contradiction of
representational analysis of the future directly. These inundated
near-futures transform our own present into the recognisably determinate
past of something yet to come.

Cyberpunk, as Philip K. Dick's novels and the films of David Cronenberg,
deals with a near-future world congested with the coming technologies of
everyday life and pushes the thresholds to the point where the psychoses
rip through and the Metrophage gets ugly...

Thomas Pynchon in Gravity's Rainbow explores the obliteration of
outdated territories, languages, affiliations, of any boundaries or forms
that have impeded the installation of cybernetics--the theory of messages
and their control is here intermeshed with the hegemony of what Pynchon
calls the mega-cartel, the zaibatsu, the multinationals.

Cyberpunk is the literary incarnation of this colliding of fictional
worlds, between the high-octane five star fantasies of the multi-nationals
and the junk-cult feral scams of the street guerillas living off their
products, but fantastically mutating them.

Certain central themes spring up repeatedly in Cyberpunk. Firstly, the
theme of body invasion, the target vehicle: prosthetic limbs, implanted
circuitry, cosmetic surgery, cyberspace, DNA, genetic alteration. Secondly,
the real hard edge of mind invasion: brain-computer interfaces, artificial
intelligences, neuro-chemistry--all the techniques radically redefining the
nature of humanity, the nature of the self.

Cyberpunk is gorged with detail-it uses carefully constructed intricacy
and readily extrapolates into daily life. It goes for crammed or condensed
prose: rapid, dizzying, skidding bursts of novel information, sensory
overload, a special brilliant feeling that makes you crisp at the
edges--submerging the reader in the equivalent of a titanic blast of
information, great gulfs of linguistic intensity as the vasopressin hits.

Cyberpunk has a strong garage-band aesthetic. It grapples with the raw
core of the near future--its myths, its ideas, its coming practices. It is
a pop culture which is theorizing itself into a more cohesive and
self-determined existence.

Of BLADE RUNNER

Blade Runner is really about Roy Batty/Rutger Hauer/method actors in
general.

The Cyberpunk must allow him/herself to be swept into the multiple
currents that cross the city and beckon at random, to clear a path through
a deliberately confused atmosphere of this fictive metropolis and
distinguish the real from the irreal even in the most indiscernible cases.

Roy's murder of Tyrell is the most meaningful statement in the whole of
Cyberpunk : It is a fearful thing to meet your maker.

Of the Media-Induced Experience: THE SPECTACLE:

For Baudrillard, television--chief purveyor of the Spectacle--is a
paradigm of failed escape combinations, of implosive effects, of remembered
codes that make you

Excerpted from:

"...There is another book, sacred to this tribe, called the Kabbalah.
Its name literally means "a welcome" -- an initiation -- for the
Kabbalah is the key to understanding the hidden cipher of the Hebrew
Scriptures and Prophecies. The "Secret Chiefs" of this tribe, descended
as they are from magicians, Kabbalists and mystics, are dedicated to the
task of bringing about the fulfillment of these same prophecies. To this
end, they have learned to become masters of intrigue, deception, the
sleight of hand, and the inspiration of secret societies from the
Knights Templar and the Rosicrucians to the Golden Dawn, Argenteum
Astrum and the O.T.O., because from time immemorial the nations of the
world have sought to discover the secret knowledge of the Jews. It is
not mere coincidence that the word "cabal" is derived from the Hebrew
Kabbalah.

It was in 917 C.E. that Aaron ben Samuel, a Babalonian scholar and a
Jew, arrived in Italy. He carried with him the texts and ancient oral
traditions of the Practical Kabbalists, known to have existed at least
as far back as the time of Solomon, who had himself been a sorcerer.
Whereas the Speculative Kabbalists were well-known to be harmless
mystics and holy men, the Practical Kabbalists were given over to the
quest for worldly power, becoming the Grand Masters of illusion, the
arch-deceivers.

"Almost immediately upon his arrival, he imparted his mystical knowledge
to the scholarly Kalonymus family. When they moved to the Rhineland in
917 c.e. they established what is now commonly referred to as German
Kabbalism by some, and Early Hasidism by others. Until the time of
Eleazar of Worms, the mystic doctrine transmitted by Aaron ben Samuel
had been considered the private property of the Kalonymides. It was
Judah he-Hasid ("the Pious Jew", died 1217), a member of the Kalonymides
family, who directed his pupil Eleazar to reveal the oral and written
doctrine to a larger audience."

Charled Ponce Kabbalah: An Introduction and Illumination for the World
Today

In the meantime, a radical change had swept through Europe and the yet
more-civilized Islamic world. At the time of Aaron ben Samuel, the Jews
were in control of virtually all commerce and banking throughout the
Mediterranean, Northern Europe and eastward as far as Pakistan. This was
the Golden Age of the Diaspora, when Jews had become privileged in
virtually every court as doctors, advisors, financiers, navigators,
mapmakers, scribes (lawyers), alchemists and astrologers. Then suddenly,
with the start of the Crusades, the Jews were set upon, cast down and
slaughtered throughout the Christian parts of the world.

The First Crusade, in 1095, was under the military leadership of Godfrey
de Bouillon. After the sack of Jerusalem in 1097, Godfrey, allegedly a
Moravingian and Grand Master of the newly-formed (1070 AD) Prieure de
Sion, co-founded the Knights Templar, an order of warrior-monks drawn
from the ranks of the nobility, for the purpose of protecting pilgrims
to the Holy Land.

Conventional history tends to skirt the issue of why the Crusades. The
"calls for help" from the Byzantine Empire to fight the Turks have been
perhaps overstated. The fortress of Constantinople contained a vast
hoard of wealth dating back to Alexander the Great. The Byzantines could
well-afford to hire on the Franks as mercenaries. The Church needed to
transfer the Frankish Knights' loyalty from the French king to the Pope,
and a Crusade provided the opportunity. While the main Turkish force was
arrayed against Byzantium, the Crusaders struck at the exposed Turkish
flank -- Jerusalem! There only remained the question of how the Knights
would be paid. King Baldwin was appointed Prince of Jerusalem by the
Holy See, the Knights Templar became his de-facto government, and they
immediately set about fortifying their newly-created kingdom with modern
castles built for them by the Masons. Within ten years, the Knights and
an affiliated organization, the Hospitallers, were to amass a vast
fortune in land, castles and merchant fleets, as well as a banking
monopoly that was protected by a special Papal dispensation allowing the
Knights to engage in usury.

This is the key to understanding the Crusades: the rise in importance of
merchant-banking. We must remember that, at the time,
intelligence-gathering was an important function of the traveling
merchant class, later called the merchant adventurers, and that the
eleventh-century bankers and caravan masters formed the nexus of what
was to evolve into our modern intelligence and banking apparatus. The
two functions are inextricable from one another. By either providing or
withholding information, they could influence political affairs. And by
the setting of rates of exchange, the merchant bankers could either
drain a city of its capital, or direct wealth and commerce its way. And
thus it was that the merchant bankers -- who were primarily Jews, and
the upstart Venetians -- were

 Scientists discover anthrax cure
http://jang.com.pk/thenews/nov2001-daily/01-11-2001/world/w13.htm

VIENNA: A substance that can destroy anthrax within seconds and could
revolutionise the
fight against bio-terrorism has been discovered in Austria, scientists
said here
 Wednesday.

The spray acts as an anthrax disinfectant, killing anthrax spores in
envelopes, on
surfaces, on the skin and even in the nose, scientist Apostolos
Georgopolous of Vienna
General Hospital told AFP. If it passes tests by Austrian health
authorities, the spray
could revolutionise the treatment of suspicious powders which have
brought government
offices, media centres and airports across the world to a standstill
since the terrorist
attacks on the United States of September 11.

While anthrax scares currently mean whole buildings have to be
evacuated, the new spray
could decontaminate the room where a suspicious powder is found without
affecting the
rest of the building, according to Austrian state health office
spokesman Martin Glier.

The new substance was used in Vienna General Hospital as a disinfectant
for some
months before doctors decided to test it to see if it killed anthrax
bacteria as well last
weekend, Georgopoulos explained. We have found that in practice it is
very easy to
handle and that it works very well on anthrax, you just spray it on a
surface or an
envelope and then it's gone. You can even spray it on skin or in the
nose, he said.

Austrian health authorities are running tests on the substance to see
if it can be
marketed to a wider audience to deal with anthrax alerts. We are doing
our best to
speed up the process, Glier said.

Since the anthrax scare started with the October 5 death of a photo
editor in Florida,
two postal workers in Washington have died and another 12 people have
been infected
 with the disease.

Aid officials estimate that up to 7.5 million Afghans might
be threatened with starvation.
- from article below

Friends,

The evidence seems to be that more people will die in
Afghanistan this winter than died in all of Hitler's
concentration camps. During these last few weeks when
something might still be done about it, the US-UK Axis
continues the bombing raids and drops token food packages -
not enough to feed a single village. And these are dropped
in the wrong places, often in fields infested with land
mines.

There is no possibility that the Axis leaders are unaware of
the genocidal consequences of their acts, and the token food
drops amount to a cynical propaganda ploy to distract public
attention from those consequences. Add this to the 1.5
million Iraqi's killed by Axis sanctions, and millions
killed by IMF/CIA actions in Rwanda and elsewhere in Africa
-- we are witnessing history's greatest intentional
holocaust.

Following a brief report on the humanitarian disaster, and
another about U.S. cover-up measures, there's a longer piece

ZNet Commentary
What's So Complex About It? October 19, 2001
By Michael Albert

In the past few weeks I have minutely explored, often with
Stephen Shalom, multifold concerns about September 11 and
the war on terrorism. With him I have tried to calmly and
soberly respond to all kinds of concerns people feel. I
recommend doing it. We all need to become adept at rebutting
the insanely manipulative media messages that crowd into so
many people's minds, and into our own as well. But going
straight to the uncomplicated heart of the matter sometimes
has merit, too.

The U.S. bombing of Afghanistan is a barbaric assault on
defenseless civilians. It threatens a nearly
incomprehensible human calamity. It is pursuing abominable
goals.

The bombing is not a just war, as Richard Falk labels it
in The Nation, but a vigilante attack. No, it is not a
vigilante attack; it is a vigilante lynch-mob assault writ
large. No, it is not even a vigilante lynch mob assault writ
large--even vigilante lynch mobs go after only those they
think are culprits and not innocent bystanders. The bombing
of Afghanistan is a gargantuan repugnance hurled against
some of the poorest people on the planet. And this
gargantuan repugnance is undertaken not out of sincere if
horrendously misguided desires to curtail terrorism--since
the bombing undeniably manifests terror and feeds the
wellsprings of more terrorism to come--but out of malicious
desires to establish a new elite-serving logic of U.S.
policy-making via an endless War on Terrorism to replace the
defunct Cold War. This is rehashed Reaganism made more
cataclysmic than even his dismal mind could conceive.

When people say, but doesn't the U.S. have a right to defend
itself?. I understand their hurt, pain, anger, and
confusion. But I also have to admit that I want to scream
that the U.S. is increasing the likelihood that a million or
more souls will suffer fatal starvation. Is that self
defense?

Put differently, what kind of thinking sees denying food to
humans as self defense? The answer is thinking like Bush's,
thinking like bin Laden's, thinking that treats innocent
human lives as chess pieces, as checkers, as tidily winks,
in pursuit of its own deadly agendas. Thinking that is
willing to rocket a plane into a building to take 6,000
innocent lives, or thinking that is willing to drop bombs
into an already devastated country abetting cataclysmic
starvation. Or, more often, it is thinking that has been
systematically denied the most basic information relevant to
the issues at hand, and that is too fearful, depressed,
angry, or cynical to admit disturbing truths.

You think I exaggerate?

Jean Ziegler, Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food to the
U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, said October 15,
The bombing has to stop right now. There is a humanitarian
emergency. Lest anyone miss the point, he continued, In
winter the lorries cannot go in any more. Millions of
Afghans will be unreachable in winter and winter is coming
very, very soon. As Reuters reported (and AP carried as
well, but not any U.S. newspaper or other major media
outlet, as best I can tell), the United Nations has warned
of a catastrophe unless aid can get through for up to seven
million Afghans. Ziegler continues, We must give the
(humanitarian) organizations a chance to save the millions
of people who are internally displaced (inside
Afghanistan), adding that he was echoing an (essentially
unreported) appeal made by U.N. Human Rights Commissioner
Mary Robinson a few days earlier, who was in turn echoing
reports that go back to before the bombing. Ziegler called
the bombing a catastrophe for humanitarian work. Or in the
words of Christian Aid Spokesman

And all the tawny, and the crimson leaves.
Yea, she hath passed with poppies in her arms,
Under the star of dusk, through stealing mist,
And blessed the earth, and gone, while no man wist.
With slow, reluctant feet, and weary eyes,
And eye-lids heavy with the coming sleep,
With small breasts lifted up in stress of sighs,
She passed, as shadows pass, among the sheep;
While the earth dreamed, and only I was ware
Of that faint fragrance blown from her soft hair.
The land lay steeped in peace of silent dreams;
There was no sound amid the sacred boughs.
Nor any mournful music in her streams:
Only I saw the shadow on her brows,
Only I knew her for the yearly slain,
And wept, and weep until she come again.

Some excerpts from:
SO YOU WANT TO BE AN ORTHODOCTOR?
http://www.nancho.net/memes/orthodoc.html
by W.David Kubiak
>>>"Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together
again in new shapes of our own choosing." George Orwell
 >>>..What orthodoctors essentially
do (is to) configure the psychic
attention fields, the habits of mind, that animate and synchronize
vast
social bodies and render them agreeably servile to the current
tenants
in head-quarters.
>>>Threats are obvious tools of the trade, but threats are tricky.
The
efficiency of a body that must individually threaten its members
into
line is abysmal. An orthodoctrinal threat must not just inspire
a
specific fear, it must conjure a nameless dread. The best threats
are
thus implicit, generic, and external to the hierarchy they benefit.
>>>Threats justify emotional appeals for individual self-sacrifice
in
the name of the Greater Good, which inexorably entail the sacrifice
of
personal rights, freedoms and liberties - "since we must single-mindedly
resist this terrible scourge, you will immediately renounce any
mind of
your own..."
>>>...All viable orthodoxies dominate not only the content of their
constituents' vision, but also its inclination. They must control
who
members look up to or down upon, what rules will be observed or
overlooked, and how frequently their unifying symbols receive ritual
re-spect and re-gard.
>>>Without historical exception, orthodoxies exist solely to enforce
and
embody egregious inequalities. The social bodies they in-form are
always
vertically aligned - whether by caste, race, class or corporate
ranking
- with all those beneath the noble brow inescapably working more,
owning
little, deciding less, and being steeply looked down upon to boot.
>>>It appears so self-evident that challenging the corporate crew's
invulnerable power today would be so clearly, plainly and obviously
futile, that we may justifiably suspect we are caught up in some
vast
translucent orthodoxy ourselves. For even if we do not personally
inhabit either a major corporate org or recognizable hierarchy,
we all
still abide in a psycho-social environment that has for many intensive
generations been cultured from Big Bodies, by Big Bodies, and for
Big
Bodies. And that ubiquitous miasma just has to affect our air,
not to
mention taste and vision.
>>>An orthodoxy is not merely a static assortment of canons, codes
and
myths of regulation. It is above all a vital morphogenetic force
field
that aligns and synchronizes our beings within a hierarchical Greater
Whole. Over time, these Wholes become tightly integrated entities
bonded
with common symbols, customs, language, etc. But the key adhesive
is
attention. Ultimately, it matters little how unified your values,
myths
or goals if your members don't pay any attention to them. Rapt
attention, whether elicited with fear, love or fascination, is
thus the
vital precursor of all social synchronization and the life force
that
in-forms, nourishes and animates all corporate bodies.
>>>Next to Japan, Inc., the happiest exemplar of social organismics
has
to be our ancient amigo, the slime mold. The slime mold is not
a
civilized beast but, for a brief and shining moment at least, it
is a
paragon of orthodoxy and a startling corporate parable. A typical
specimen starts off as hundreds of thousands of rugged individual
amoebas trysting and boogying across the forest floor. One day,
however,
if the good life starts to wane and the living gets un-easy, low
frequency angst starts to reverberate through the population. Out
of
this troubled time, a leader or "founder cell" rises up and sends
forth
a gaseous clarion call. The masses quickly throng to its charismatic
chemistry, swarm atop its bandwagon, and eventually form a micro
skyscraping spire of sweaty melded bodies called a grex. This pulsing
phallic collective then magically comes alive with its own esprit
de
corps, subordinates all individual liberties to the Will and Progress
of
the Greater Whole, and single-mindedly inches off toward a promised
Babylon. OK, that part is civilized enough.
The wild part is that grex leaders
keep their promises. After long but
swift migrations, they bring their incorporated brethren to some
auspicious eminence and expose them to the light. When a shaft
finally
strikes a grex from behind, it reacts with yet another miracle.
Its
leadership hunkers down and launches its members aloft in a glowing
group gondola where each working class cell reclaims its individuality,
identity and a buoyant spore parachute. They burst free, ride the
wind
and resume singular life in some brave new world. This final rite
of
passage is called fruition, and is doubly wondrous because the

We in India have always been victims of terrorists from Pakistan. Many
times the Pakistan government would be on the Terrorist Watch List of
the U.S., but the U.S. would never brand them terrorists. How can the
Pakistan government be an ally to fight terrorism? They are the
terrorists. Remember that the 1993 bomber of WTC found sanctuary in
Pakistan. As for the U.S., when Indians were being killed by the Islamic
terror groups from Pakistan and Afghanistan, it wasn't terrorism - it
was a dispute. But when the exact same groups attack the U.S., it is
World Terrorism. (Arvind Kumar, a reader in California)

Colin Powell flew into Pakistan and gave a press conference two days
ago. U.S. fighter-bombers have been flying into Afghanistan all week.

On 17 October, the 'New York Times' reported:

American pilots have for the first time been freed to choose their own
targets and fire at will within specific zones around Taliban
strongholds in Afghanistan, senior Pentagon officials said today. United

Tell that to the Red Cross. While President Bush was exhorting school

“'go out and mow a lawn or do somebody a favor to earn a dollar' to help
the children of Afghanistan, and told them to send it directly to the
White House to be turned over to a Red Cross fund. ('Washington Post,'
17 October)

U.S. planes were bombing the Red Cross in Afghanistan:

'U.S. forces did not know that I.C.R.C. was using one or more of the
warehouses,' a Pentagon statement said. The Red Cross said each of five
warehouses in its compound was marked on the roof with a large red
cross. The raids occurred at about 1 p.m., in daylight, the agency
said. ('N.Y. Times,' 17 October 2001)

This is strikingly reminiscent of U.S. military crimes and
justifications in the 1999 war against Yugoslavia. There too, buildings
with red crosses on the roofs were bombed in daylight, though always by
accident. (1)

If clearly marked Red Cross buildings are not safe in the bright light
of day, then any structure, animal or person, with the bad luck to be
situated in a 'fire at will' zone may be blown to pieces. And we will
never hear about most such crimes because a) the U.S. military is
enforcing tight media control and b) most of the victims won't have the
Public Relations clout of the International Red Cross. Here's a
philosophical problem for you: if a child screams in pain but you are
not there to hear it, is he or she actually wounded?

[Residents of Kabul, Afghanistan look for belongings amid the rubble of
their home, Oct. 18. Four children were killed. Sayed Salahuddin/Reuters]

Why isn't this terrorism?

Because the U.S. government says it's not. Instead, we are told, it is
the unfortunate but unavoidable consequence of war, as if some natural
process were in control, as if the U.S. military command were helpless
to prevent the occurrence of 'fire at will' zones.

According to Washington, which has yet to present evidence that the WTC
horror was in fact masterminded from Afghanistan, it has no choice. but
to bomb. Thousands of hours of media broadcasts and miles of newsprint
support this claim, so who are we to ask for evidence?

Government officials and the media say: Bin Laden's terrorists are
attacking us. We have no choice but to wage 'infinite war' to root out
such terrorism.

Elsewhere we have argued that this answer is either weak or crazy. But
as more facts come to light, it becomes increasingly clear that this
answer is a conscious lie. (2)

The proof lies in one word: Pakistan. Pakistan is a key supporting
player in the infinite war, supposedly against terrorism.

On the 16th, Secretary Colin Powell held a joint press conference in
Islamabad with Gen. Pervez Musharraf, military dictator of Pakistan.
Here's what the 'New York Times' reported:

[Start 'New York Times' Quote:]
The United States and Pakistan agreed today to work urgently for the
creation of a new, broad-based government in Afghanistan that both sides
said could include moderate elements of the Taliban movement whose
present leadership is now a target for the American-led military
campaign.

Secretary Powell said he had come to tell Pakistan that the United
States -- long chastised here as having abandoned its cold war ally
following the collapse of the Soviet Union -- was returning to
demonstrate our enduring commitment to a great Muslim nation. ...
The high praise heaped on Pakistan provided a curious sight: an
American secretary of state standing next to a general in uniform who
seized power in a military coup, and lauding his achievements.

The War of Nerves

 Summary

Having resisted the temptation of precipitous retaliatory strikes on
al-Qa'ida and Afghanistan's Taliban
regime, the United States has entered a period of classic psychological
warfare. Just as Americans have
no way of knowing when, where or how suspected Islamic radicals might
strike again, the Taliban and
al-Qa'ida also must live in a state of constant tension. Both sides
must diffuse their forces to protect
possible targets, creating defensive weak spots -- and both sides hope
to wear the other down to a
 point of capitulation.

 Analysis

The key to victory is surprise. Surprise, like war, exists on three
levels: strategic (whether there will be
an attack), operational (how the attack will be carried out) and
tactical (where and when the attack will
 occur).

On Sept. 11 al-Qa'ida achieved tactical and operational surprise, even
though it lost strategic surprise
 long ago.

On that day, the United States lost strategic surprise as well. There
was and has been no question that
the United States intends to make war on al-Qa'ida, and by now, it is
clear that some sort of war also will
be waged against the Taliban government of Afghanistan. What the United
States has fought hard during
the past two weeks to develop and retain is operational and tactical
surprise.

Both al-Qa'ida and the United States are carefully cloaking the
operational and tactical levels. It is likely
that al-Qa'ida will strike again, though it is not known how, when or
where that attack will be carried out.
The United States was in danger of losing operational surprise early in
the new war on terrorism, when
the desire to act immediately was strong and the assumption was the
United States would respond as it
had in the past, with cruise missile attacks aimed at a variety of
targets. Washington resisted the
temptation of precipitous action, creating increasing uncertainty on
the strategic and tactical levels.

The resistance is more than simply regaining the element of surprise
and initiative. The period we are
now in is a war of nerves. Al-Qa'ida has created a profound uncertainty
within the United States as to
whether it will strike again and if so, how, where and when. It is of
course unknown whether al-Qa'ida
is capable of another attack now or in the future. This very
uncertainty creates the foundation for
 follow-on attacks.

This is a form of psychological warfare that achieves several things.
First, because there is no good
operational and tactical intelligence as to al-Qa'ida's next move, the
United States must defend many
possible targets against many types of possible attack. Because
everything cannot be equally defended,
al-Qa'ida can wait, observe the defensive system and attack the weakest
point. Second, uncertainty
raises tensions, increases the likelihood of response to imagined
threats and exhausts the defenders
physically and psychologically. Third, al-Qa'ida can choose to transmit
false information about impending
attacks to raise tensions and trigger unwarranted offensive operations.
Finally, within this atmosphere,
the probability that false alarms will lead to a lessened state of
alertness opens the door to more
 opportunities.

The United States is now establishing the same dynamic within the
Afghan theater of operations. There
is no question that an attack is coming. The United States has,
however, created a profound sense of
uncertainty as to the timing, nature and targets of the attack.
Washington has carefully released
information that U.S. and British Special Forces are already in
Afghanistan. It made certain the Taliban
and al-Qa'ida knew four carrier battle groups were stationed offshore.
Using local and international
news channels, it very publicly made clear that the United States has
deployed some forces in Pakistan,
Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. It has stated that U.S. forces are hot on
the trail of Osama bin Laden.

Washington is capable of launching air strikes at any time. It is
constantly releasing information that
various facilities might be attacked in a matter of days or that
certain people might be captured at any
hour. This campaign, like al-Qa'ida's, works because it is quite
possibly true -- but not certainly true.
Therefore al-Qa'ida and the Taliban must live in a state of constant
tension, unsure when, where or how
 the strikes will come.

Like the United States, the Taliban and al-Qa'ida must now defend all
assets against operational and
tactical uncertainty. In being forced to diffuse defenses, they create
opportunities that U.S. intelligence
can observe and exploit. The Taliban and al-Qa'ida must expend
tremendous energy in unceasing alerts
triggered by imagination, deliberate disinformation and genuine
threats. Very soon, their intelligence and
other forces will not be able to distinguish between imagination, lies
and truth.

The fact that the United States must

http://www.fbi.gov/congress/congress01/freeh051001.htm

The FBI views domestic terrorism as the unlawful use, or
threatened use, of violence by a group or individual that is
based and operating entirely within the United States or its
territories without foreign direction and which is committed
against persons or property with the intent of intimidating
or coercing a government or its population in furtherance of
political or social objectives.

The second category of domestic terrorists, left-wing
groups, generally profess a revolutionary socialist doctrine
and view themselves as protectors of the people against the
dehumanizing effects of capitalism and imperialism. They
aim to bring about change in the United States through
revolution rather than through the established political
process.

Anarchists and extremist socialist groups -- many of which,
such as the Workers'World Party, Reclaim the Streets, and Carnival
Against Capitalism -- have an international presence and, at
times, also represent a potential threat in the United
States. For example, anarchists, operating individually and
in groups, caused much of the damage during the 1999 World
Trade Organization ministerial meeting in Seattle.

Special interest terrorism differs from traditional
right-wing and left-wing terrorism in that extremist special
interest groups seek to resolve specific issues, rather than
effect more widespread political change. Special interest
extremists continue to conduct acts of politically motivated
violence to force segments of society, including, the
general public, to change attitudes about issues considered
important to their causes. These groups occupy the extreme
fringes of animal rights, pro-life, environmental,
anti-nuclear, and other political and social movements.

[CTRL] EDWARD W. SAID: The Clash of Ignorance

2001-10-05 Thread Chris Case

The Clash of Ignorance by EDWARD W. SAID
Samuel Huntington's article "The Clash of Civilizations?"
appeared in the Summer 1993 issue of Foreign Affairs, where it immediately
attracted a surprising amount of attention and reaction. Because the article
was intended to supply Americans with an original thesis about "a new phase"
in world politics after the end of the cold war, Huntington's terms of
argument seemed compellingly large, bold, even visionary. He very clearly
had his eye on rivals in the policy-making ranks, theorists such as Francis
Fukuyama and his "end of history" ideas, as well as the legions who had
celebrated the onset of globalism, tribalism and the dissipation of the
state. But they, he allowed, had understood only some aspects of this new
period. He was about to announce the "crucial, indeed a central, aspect"
of what "global politics is likely to be in the coming years." Unhesitatingly
he pressed on:
"It is my hypothesis that the fundamental source of conflict in
this new world will not be primarily ideological or primarily economic.
The great divisions among humankind and the dominating source of conflict
will be cultural. Nation states will remain the most powerful actors in
world affairs, but the principal conflicts of global politics will occur
between nations and groups of different civilizations. The clash of civilizations
will dominate global politics. The fault lines between civilizations will
be the battle lines of the future."
Most of the argument in the pages that followed relied on a vague
notion of something Huntington called "civilization identity" and "the
interactions among seven or eight [sic] major civilizations," of which
the conflict between two of them, Islam and the West, gets the lion's share
of his attention. In this belligerent kind of thought, he relies heavily
on a 1990 article by the veteran Orientalist Bernard Lewis, whose ideological
colors are manifest in its title, "The Roots of Muslim Rage." In both articles,
the personification of enormous entities called "the West" and "Islam"
is recklessly affirmed, as if hugely complicated matters like identity
and culture existed in a cartoonlike world where Popeye and Bluto bash
each other mercilessly, with one always more virtuous pugilist getting
the upper hand over his adversary. Certainly neither Huntington nor Lewis
has much time to spare for the internal dynamics and plurality of every
civilization, or for the fact that the major contest in most modern cultures
concerns the definition or interpretation of each culture, or for the unattractive
possibility that a great deal of demagogy and downright ignorance is involved
in presuming to speak for a whole religion or civilization. No, the West
is the West, and Islam Islam.
The challenge for Western policy-makers, says Huntington, is to
make sure that the West gets stronger and fends off all the others, Islam
in particular. More troubling is Huntington's assumption that his perspective,
which is to survey the entire world from a perch outside all ordinary attachments
and hidden loyalties, is the correct one, as if everyone else were scurrying
around looking for the answers that he has already found. In fact, Huntington
is an ideologist, someone who wants to make "civilizations" and "identities"
into what they are not: shut-down, sealed-off entities that have been purged
of the myriad currents and countercurrents that animate human history,
and that over centuries have made it possible for that history not only
to contain wars of religion and imperial conquest but also to be one of
exchange, cross-fertilization and sharing. This far less visible history
is ignored in the rush to highlight the ludicrously compressed and constricted
warfare that "the clash of civilizations" argues is the reality. When he
published his book by the same title in 1996, Huntington tried to give
his argument a little more subtlety and many, many more footnotes; all
he did, however, was confuse himself and demonstrate what a clumsy writer
and inelegant thinker he was.
The basic paradigm of West versus the rest (the cold war opposition
reformulated) remained untouched, and this is what has persisted, often
insidiously and implicitly, in discussion since the terrible events of
September 11. The carefully planned and horrendous, pathologically motivated
suicide attack and mass slaughter by a small group of deranged militants
has been turned into proof of Huntington's thesis. Instead of seeing it
for what it is--the capture of big ideas (I use the word loosely) by a
tiny band of crazed fanatics for criminal purposes--international luminaries
from former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto to Italian Prime Minister
Silvio Berlusconi have pontificated about Islam's troubles, and in the
latter's case have used Huntington's ideas to rant on about the West's
superiority, how "we" have Mozart and Michelangelo and they don't. (Berlusconi
has since made a halfhearted apology for his insult to

He also says he hopes the West conquers Islamic civilization.

He told a news conference: "We must be aware of the superiority of our

He also claimed Western civilization is superior because it "has at its

Berlusconi went on to say that he trusts "the West will continue to

it was 1,400 years ago".

[CTRL] America to Wage War for USSR Inheritance

===
America to Wage War for USSR Inheritance
by Anatoli Baranov [posted 20 September 2001]
===

The world is waiting for the war. There are so many different messages
appearing on this subject, it is hard to read them all. It is also hard
to say how many people on the planet try to guess what will happen in
the nearest future. The sources in the Russian special services are not
standing aside in this respect and PRAVDA.Ru has recently touched upon
one of them.

According to the estimations from this very respectable organization,
the USAís incursion into Afghanistan will be carried out taking into
consideration the British and Russian experiences. Missiles and
bombardment will be used under the old scenario and special military
forces will be used as well ñ nothing new...

America will increase its military presence along the entire 40th
parallel, which is what we can see now in Bosnia, Kosovo, and Macedonia;
soon we will also see it in the republics of Georgia, Azerbaijan,
Turkmenia, and Uzbekistan.

The Injirlik military base, which is deployed in Turkey, will surely be
modernized, and this base will become one of the key points of the
American presence. The establishment of reserve points on the territory
of several countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States will be
performed under different forms. However, the mid-Caspian area and
Turkmeniaís deposits will be taken under the control of the United
States. It should be mentioned that the authorities of Azerbaijan and
Georgia republics are in willing contact with NATO and the United
States. The republics of Middle Asia are more reserved in their
aspiration to change their orientation from Russia to the USA, because
these republics are situated far away from the American bases and
Russiaís military presence is there.

The operation in Afghanistan has the following objective: to make the
region closer to the zone of USAís vital interests. To begin with, the
American army intends to gain control of the airports and other areas on
Turkmenistanís territory (including the former Soviet republic in
Termez). It is interesting that America is interested in the former
Soviet base Bagram, which is on the territory of Afghanistan. This base
is currently under the control of NATO. In addition, the USA is going to
bring its influence back into NATO: the tragic and very ìtimelyî Ahmad
Shah Masoodís death (Afghan opposition leader).

Therefore, Russiaís control over the region of Central Asia is going to
fade away. The same thing will happen with its control over the
Caucasus. The USA will make the republics of Middle Asia to reconsider
the Collective Security Treaty of the CIS and Russian troops will be
called back to Russian territory. The United States will gain total
control over Central Asia, over the Indian ocean, and the country will
be able to efficiently control the processes in Indo-China and
Indonesia. This will actually bring about the total control of the
United States of America over the Islamic world, since the moves of
Iran, Pakistan, and Iraq will depend upon the military presence of the
United States.

This scenario raises a lot of doubts regarding the versions of the acts
of terrorism in New York and Washington, for there is only one country
that is gaining absolute and long-term profit out of these acts. However
there are doubts about the lack of information of the other members of
the western intelligence community regarding the preparation for the
terrorist attack. Most likely, such information was available, but all
of the special services were blocking it for some reason. In this case,
it is absolutely not important who gave the freedom of action to the
suicidal terrorists.

A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not
what it seems to the majority of people. Only a small inside group
knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very
few at the expense of the masses.
I believe in adequate defense at the coastline and nothing else. If
a nation comes over here to fight, then we'll fight. The trouble with
America is that when the dollar only earns 6 percent over here, then
it gets restless and goes overseas to get 100 percent. Then the flag
follows the dollar and the soldiers follow the flag.

I wouldn't go to war again as I have done to protect some lousy

for. One is the defense of our homes and the other is the Bill of
Rights. War for any other reason is simply a racket.
There isn't a trick in the racketeering bag that the military gang
is blind to. It has its finger men to point out enemies,
its muscle men to destroy enemies, its brain men to plan war
preparations, and a Big Boss Super-Nationalistic-Capitalism.

It may seem odd for me, a military man to adopt such a comparison.
Truthfulness compels me to. I spent thirty- three years and four
months in active military service as a member of this country's most
agile military force, the Marine Corps. I served in all commissioned
ranks from Second Lieutenant to Major-General. And during that
period, I spent most of my time being a high class muscle- man for
Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short, I was a
 racketeer, a gangster for capitalism.

I suspected I was just part of a racket at the time. Now I am sure
of it. Like all the members of the military profession, I never had a
thought of my own until I left the service. My mental faculties
remained in suspended animation while I obeyed the orders of higher-
ups. This is typical with everyone in the military service.

I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil
interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for
the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the
raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of
Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify
Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in
1909-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American
sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard
 Oil went its way unmolested.

During those years, I had, as the boys in the back room would say,
a swell racket. Looking back on it, I feel that I could have given Al
Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in
three districts. I operated on three continents.

But his group was too large so they decided to move across the street to

Two hundred AON staff are missing.

[CTRL] A Patriotic Prayer

2001-09-17 Thread Chris Case

-Caveat Lector-

O Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our
hearts, go forth to battle--be Thou near them! With them--in
spirit--we also go forth from the sweet peace of our beloved
firesides to smite the foe. O Lord our God, help us to tear their
soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their
smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us
to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their
wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble
homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of
their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn
them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the
wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst,
sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter,
broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge
of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord,
blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter
pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their
tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet!
We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of
Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that
are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts.
Amen.

[CTRL] Jihad vs. McWorld

2001-09-16 Thread Chris Case

-Caveat Lector-

Here, in its well-worth-reading entirety, is the well-known and
seemingly quite prescient article published in the Atlantic Monthy in
1992, Jihad vs. McWorld.

http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/foreign/barberf.htm

M A R C H 1 9 9 2

The two axial principles of our age -- tribalism and globalism -- clash
at every point except one: they may both be threatening to democracy

by Benjamin R. Barber

Just beyond the horizon of current events lie two possible political
futures -- both bleak, neither democratic. The first is a
retribalization of large swaths of humankind by war and bloodshed: a
threatened Lebanonization of national states in which culture is pitted
against culture, people against people, tribe against tribe -- a Jihad
in the name of a hundred narrowly conceived faiths against every kind of
interdependence, every kind of artificial social cooperation and civic
mutuality. The second is being borne in on us by the onrush of economic
and ecological forces that demand integration and uniformity and that
mesmerize the world with fast music, fast computers, and fast food --
with MTV, Macintosh, and McDonald's, pressing nations into one
commercially homogenous global network: one McWorld tied together by
technology, ecology, communications, and commerce. The planet is falling
precipitantly apart AND coming reluctantly together at the very same
moment.

These two tendencies are sometimes visible in the same countries at the
same instant: thus Yugoslavia, clamoring just recently to join the New
Europe, is exploding into fragments; India is trying to live up to its
reputation as the world's largest integral democracy while powerful new
fundamentalist parties like the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata
Party, along with nationalist assassins, are imperiling its hard-won
unity. States are breaking up or joining up: the Soviet Union has
disappeared almost overnight, its parts forming new unions with one
another or with like-minded nationalities in neighboring states. The old
interwar national state based on territory and political sovereignty
looks to be a mere transitional development.

The tendencies of what I am here calling the forces of Jihad and the
forces of McWorld operate with equal strength in opposite directions,
the one driven by parochial hatreds, the other by universalizing
markets, the one re-creating ancient subnational and ethnic borders from
within, the other making national borders porous from without. They have
one thing in common: neither offers much hope to citizens looking for
practical ways to govern themselves democratically. If the global future
is to pit Jihad's centrifugal whirlwind against McWorld's centripetal
black hole, the outcome is unlikely to be democratic -- or so I will
argue.

McWorld, or the Globalization of Politics

Four imperatives make up the dynamic of McWorld: a market imperative, a
resource imperative, an information-technology imperative, and an
ecological imperative. By shrinking the world and diminishing the
salience of national borders, these imperatives have in combination
achieved a considerable victory over factiousness and particularism, and
not least of all over their most virulent traditional form --
nationalism. It is the realists who are now Europeans, the utopians who
dream nostalgically of a resurgent England or Germany, perhaps even a
resurgent Wales or Saxony. Yesterday's wishful cry for one world has
yielded to the reality of McWorld.

THE MARKET IMPERATIVE. Marxist and Leninist theories of imperialism
assumed that the quest for ever-expanding markets would in time compel
nation-based capitalist economies to push against national boundaries in
search of an international economic imperium. Whatever else has happened
to the scientistic predictions of Marxism, in this domain they have
proved farsighted. All national economies are now vulnerable to the
inroads of larger, transnational markets within which trade is free,
currencies are convertible, access to banking is open, and contracts are
enforceable under law. In Europe, Asia, Africa, the South Pacific, and
the Americas such markets are eroding national sovereignty and giving
rise to entities -- international banks, trade associations,
transnational lobbies like OPEC and Greenpeace, world news services like
CNN and the BBC, and multinational corporations that increasingly lack a
meaningful national identity -- that neither reflect nor respect
nationhood as an organizing or regulative principle.

The market imperative has also reinforced the quest for international
peace and stability, requisites of an efficient international economy.
Markets are enemies of parochialism, isolation, fractiousness, war.
Market psychology attenuates the psychology of ideological and religious
cleavages and assumes a concord among producers and consumers --
categories that ill fit narrowly conceived national or religious
cultures. Shopping has little tolerance for blue laws, whether dictated

Nostradamus tops the best sellers

God is losing ground to the doomsayers

Special report: terrorism in the US

Mark Lawson Saturday September 15, 2001 The Guardian

The events in America touch at almost every turn on technology: the
benevolent and malevolent uses of our inventions. In the central
catastrophe, one of man's proudest pieces of engineering was flown into
another. And - for every warming story of the cell-phone or email system
which allowed a call for help or reassurance to a loved one - there was
the thought that these same communications almost certainly allowed the
terrorists and their overlord to synchronise the cataclysm.

Indeed, our frequent ambiguity about scientific development may be
encapsulated in this question: is it better or worse that a person about
to die on an aeroplane is able to make a goodbye call from the sky? Now
- following events on global live television - we wait to see which of
the potential nightmares available in military technology George Bush
might call on.

And yesterday one aspect of modern technology allowed us an
extraordinary insight into the effect of these events on the American
psyche. The online bookseller amazon. com runs a best-seller list, which
is updated hourly. By yesterday evening, three of the top five titles
were about or by the celebrated doomsayer Nostradumus, with The Complete
Prophecies at number one. The other two were a history of the World
Trade Centre by an architectural writer who can never have expected the
twin towers to become history, and a volume about how to fight
terrorism. We may feel this week that this book, if it were honest,
would be short on specifics.

Amazon's ability to give an instant tally of national reading, however,
gives a new tool to cultural commentary: a sort of psychological opinion
poll. It was to be expected that, when Princess Diana died, sales of
books about her would increase but it never occurred to me that
Tuesday's war on New York would provoke a similar reaction. What, after
all, would be the subject of the books you would buy? For - unlike
earlier, much smaller rehearsals for this news story, such as the deaths
of President Kennedy and Diana - the dead were not the kind to have
biographies of them written.

But now we know from amazon that, just as they did with Diana, people
have craved, as information or souvenir, works about the central
celebrity involved: the Twin Towers. Fascinatingly, they have also in
large numbers sought to make sense of this unimaginable event in the
imagination of Nostradamus. It is a measure of the fear and derangement
now at loose quite understandably in the American mind that people can
find consolation in the idea that a 16th-century French astrologer,
writing long before aeroplanes or skyscrapers existed, somehow knew the
Manhattan holocaust was scheduled.

This widespread reading of the seer touches, though, on the more general
question of what can reassure and console at times like this. The
Americans who turn towards Nostradamus arise from an instinctively
religious society. As citizens of a largely secular culture, the British
have never comprehended the extent to which America believes itself to
be a nation blessed and directed by God but it cannot be properly
understood without this perspective.

George Bush, a born-again Christian who is reported to pray on the
telephone most days with his Bible advisers, almost certainly believes
this. For all the inflammatory rhetoric about Islam in America now,
there are without doubt those in the Bush administration who believe in
the concept of holy war from the Christian perspective. Part of the
shock to America's self-image has been a sense of divine abandonment.

The preachers in America's thousands of churches this Sunday face their
greatest intellectual challenge: explaining where God was in the skies
above the US on Tuesday. At times like this, you can see why Nostradamus
- who simply warned in universally applicable terms of disasters from
now until doom - might be an easier sell than God, who promised to care
what happened to us.

Those for whom neither God nor Nostradamus work turn for consolation to
ritual. But, however President Bush discharges his role as
commander-in-chief, there is a growing consensus that he is failing in a
crucial part of a politician's job: the crisis ceremonial. He has so far
found neither language nor body language. Improbably, after such
failures in the Diana week, Buckingham Palace has been impeccable in
this regard. Incorporating the American national anthem in the changing
of the guard was a genuinely moving touch.

Perhaps, finally, it is music which most reliably consoles. Samuel
Barber's Adagio for Strings was played yesterday in Washington Cathedral
and tonight forms part of an emergency programme at the Last Night of
the Proms. This piece has become an American equivalent of Verdi's
Requiem since Oliver Stone chose it for the soundtrack of his Vietnam
movie

[CTRL] Citizen-produced coverage

2001-09-16 Thread Chris Case

-Caveat Lector-

Computers and digital communications were too few and far between in
Yugoslavia for the strife in Kosovo to have been a real Internet war.

But one of the most striking things about the terrorist attacks in
Washington and New York was the outpouring of outstanding Internet
coverage from ordinary citizens.

The terrorist strikes prompted an avalanche of personal accounts,
photographs and videos of the terrible events from people on the ground.

And not only was citizen-produced coverage sometimes more accessible
than professional news organizations, it was often more compelling.

Amateur videos of the events posted on the Net are full of
heart-wrenching expressions of shock, fear and disbelief. Even if the
soundtrack is just a string of expletives, it's an emotional response
that carries the story home.

And while there were many powerful photographs of the tragedy taken by
both professional and amateur photographers, some of the most intimate
and unexpected shots came from outside the community of professionals.

Compare, for example, the clichéd photo of three firemen raising a flag
against a disturbing shot of a dazed elderly man emerging from the dust.

Of course, a lot of these amateurs aren't amateurs at all. They are
among New York's creative or media professionals ?- photographers,
designers and writers.

Written accounts of the terrorist strikes and their aftermath also
provided an intimacy that many news reports lacked.

Take, for example, an account from Usman Farman, a Muslim who fell to
the ground as one of the towers collapsed.

I was on my back, facing this massive cloud that was approaching, it
must have been 600 feet off, everything was already dark, Farman wrote.
I normally wear a pendant around my neck, inscribed with an Arabic
prayer for safety; similar to the cross. A Hasidic Jewish man came up to
me and held the pendant in his hand, and looked at it. He read the
Arabic out loud for a second.

What he said next, I will never forget. With a deep Brooklyn accent he
said, 'Brother, if you don't mind, there is a cloud of glass coming at
us, grab my hand, let's get the hell out of here.' He helped me stand
up, and we ran for what seemed like forever without looking back.

Most of the amateur content would be inaccessible, or at least hard to
find, if not for many of the Web's outstanding weblogs, which function
as portals to personal content.

Some higher-profile weblogs, Slashdot, Metafilter, Scripting News,
Kottke and SiliconValley.com, have done an excellent job of helping
funnel traffic to smaller sites, many of which have pictures, accounts,
opinions and ideas superior to anything found in the mainstream media.

And while The New York Times, the old, gray lady, was full of
bloodthirsty war-mongering, ordinary citizens gathered online to present
a wide range of opinions.

Depending on where you looked, there were measured calls for restraint,
investigation and thought before action. Of course, there was also
plenty of bloodlust, chest-thumping and stupidity, but online there was
at least a debate.

Now we're about to get deeply involved in some nasty, subtle, dangerous
politics, and the public doesn't even know who the players are, wrote
Eric Kidd to Scripting News' mail page. The press ought to stop poking
people's wounds and start educating the American public before we
encourage our leaders to do something stupid.

Stern-Intel (Canada). A US military intelligence source revealed
details of
an internal intelligence memo that points to the Israeli Mossad
intelligence
service having links to the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks. The

intelligence source, who requested his name be withheld, confirmed the
internal US intelligence memo circulated four weeks ago described
information
that pointed to the threat of a covert Israeli operation on US
soil to turn mass public opinion against Palestinian Arabs via an
apparent
terrorist attack on US interests that would give Israel the green light
to
implement a large scale military onslaught against the Palestinian Arab
population.
The 11 September attack has been described by experts as being too
sophisticated for a lone terrorist group to execute. This attack
required a
high level of military precision and the resources of an advanced
intelligence agency. In addition, the attackers would have needed to be

extremely familiar with both air force one flight operations, civil
airline
flight paths and aerial assault tactics on sensitive US cities like
Washington, Stated David Stern an expert on Israeli intelligence
operations.
The attacks targeted the Pentagon, World Trade Center towers, with the
White
House and Air Force One also being targets according to the FBI.
The attacks have certainly turned US public opinion firmly back in
Israel's
favor after 11 months of Palestinian uprising, heavy criticism of Israel
over
war crimes allegations and racism by a UN conference in Durban. The
attacks
serve no Arab group or nation's interests but their timing came in the
midst
of international condemnation of Israel for its policy of death squad
assassination of Palestinian political and police figures, added Stern.

If verified, the news of Israel's involvement in the US attack will
come as
no surprise to intelligence experts. The state of Israel has a long
history
of covert operations against Western targets with attacks on the King
David
Hotel, USS Liberty, murder of a Scandinavian UN envoy as well as
espionage
against the US during the Jonathan Pollard case.
On Wednesday the US defense department issued a warning to its
officials to
halt the leak of information on the investigation which it says is
happening
on a daily basis since the attacks occurred.

[CTRL] The Militarization Of Earth

2001-09-15 Thread Chris Case

-Caveat Lector-

The Militarization Of Earth
By Diane Harvey
[EMAIL PROTECTED] 9-15-1

Watching unfolding events in this country is like being forced to stand
by helplessly as an ambulance chaser deliberately sells a ruinously
expensive fake burial policy to a grief-stricken mother at the site of
her children's fatal car crash. Those who have been waiting for just
such an opportunity are cleverly manipulating natural human reactions to
catastrophic events, hour-by-hour, and day-by-day, in the most
outrageous and sickening manner possible. People are being summarily
herded quickly along, and rushed over both the fine print and the finer
points of reason, before they can wake up and come to their senses. The
citizens of this country are eagerly accepting all the ongoing specious
simulations of reality and constant barrage of half-truths simply
because they are too stunned to notice what is actually happening. At
any normal time sane people would resolutely balk at that which they are
begging for right now. While suffering human beings are still in a
highly convenient state of shock, the military is avidly and
methodically seizing the day. They very naturally have no trouble
whatsoever using their present surge of sincere anger and patriotism
(and everyone else's) to justify this great leap forward toward their
ultimate goal.

The nauseating spectacle of cold-blooded hypocritical power preying on
the most sacred human emotions and using them in order to achieve its
own ends is nothing new, although this time it is far more shameless
than usual. But the sheer scale and ultimate plan of this present
gathering of the professionally opportunistic is unprecedented. While
people are still in the throes of deepest anxiety and sorrow, the
military-industrial complex, wholly at-one with the government, is about
to launch itself in a nearly uncontested bid for control this planet.
The smoke has not yet cleared, literally or figuratively, and it is not
going to be allowed to clear. Half-truth after half-truth is being
cannily and sequentially sold to traumatized people in order to silence
all objections to what is to come.

Waving American flags and singing The Battle Hymn of the Republic, the
citizens of this country are signing away the future of freedom in the
name of Protecting the Homeland. Before anyone rejoices overmuch at how
American military technology and power will inevitable destroy opposing
hostile forces in the world, it would be best to think through what the
world will look like when they do succeed.

Anyone who has been paying attention in the last few years to the
advances in military capabilities knows that we have been seeing the
most dangerous imaginable types of new technology roll out of the
defense establishment. There has been a public outcry, to a small
degree, at the damage being done to human beings, to other forms of
life, and to the environment through some of these new weapons systems.
Now, suddenly, we are thrust into a situation where a handy blank check
has been deposited in the military-industrial expense account. We have
said in a moment of human pain: please go right ahead and dominate the
oceans, the ground, the near-space environment, and the high ground of
space, however you wish to do so. Those who have been fighting against
the rising tide of secrecy in these matters, and demanding
accountability in government and military operations, must understand
that this cause has just been overridden altogether. Whatever the
military would like to do, whatever dangerous and deadly technologies it
would like to employ, it is now perfectly free to do so, in what we are
told will be years of war ahead. We know that the modern military has a
full range of psychological, electromagnetic, chemical and biological,
laser, microwave and scalar weapons technologies ready to deploy. And by
the time people get around to realizing what they have bargained for it
will be far too late to do anything about it.

Internal security matters and external security matters will leave each
one of us minutely accounted for and tracked for life. And for a time,
we will think of it as a necessary evil. Down the road someday, when all
the coming spying, snooping, tagging, marking, tracking and identifying
business suddenly is being glaringly misused in obviously totalitarian
ways, for purposes which have nothing to do with protecting anyone from
anything, it will be far too late to complain about it. Technological
systems in place are seldom dismantled, but simply change hands, for a
price.

And down the road, if the promised massive assaults on people and the
environment do take place, our lives will be changed out of all
recognition. Eventually the horrifying consequences, both intended and
unintended, of what this military-industrial government has in mind for
this planet, will be made manifest. Far too late, no doubt the people of
the world will be very regretful indeed.

Echelon Warned US Israeli Intel Hijacked Planes Were To Be Weapons
By Ned Stafford BizReport.com 9-14-1

U.S. and Israeli intelligence agencies received warning signals at least
three months ago that Middle Eastern terrorists were planning to hijack
commercial aircraft to use as weapons to attack important symbols of
American and Israeli culture, according to a story in Germany's daily
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ).

The FAZ, quoting unnamed German intelligence sources, said that the
Echelon spy network was being used to collect information about the
terrorist threats, and that U.K. intelligence services apparently also
had advance warning. The FAZ, one of Germany's most respected dailies,
said that even as far back as six months ago western and near-east press
services were receiving information that such attacks were being
planned.

Within the American intelligence community, the warnings were taken
seriously and surveillance intensified, the FAZ said. However, there was
disagreement on how such terrorist attacks could be prevented, the
newspaper said.

Echelon is said to be a vast information collection system capable of
monitoring all the electronic communications in the world. It is thought
to be operated by the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
No government agency has ever confirmed or denied its existence.
However, an EU committee that investigated Echelon for more than a year
just last week reported its belief that the system does exist.

The EU committee said that Echelon sucks up electronic transmissions
"like a vacuum cleaner," using keyword search techniques to sift through
enormous amounts of data.

The FAZ, in its news story, described the system as covering the whole
world with 120 satellites. The newspaper also said Israeli intelligence
had collected information indicated that Arab terrorist groups planned
to hijack planes in Europe to use as weapons to attack targets in Tel
Aviv and other coastal cities in Israel.

Because of increasing concerns of plane hijackings, Israel has tested a
new x-ray machine at the Tel Aviv airport, the FAZ said. The machine
capable of detecting all known explosive elements, even if only in small
quantities, the newspaper said.

The FAZ said that German intelligence fears that in coming days planes
will be hijacked in Europe and the Near East, and that there is no sure
way to protect against it.

Should we judge artists by their politics? Is their work enough? how

I think these are interesting questions - any thoughts?

They are interesting questions, which keep coming up in other contexts
(cf. the 604 list) as well.

Hard to answer, though, without clarifying a few terms. For instance,
what are we talking about when we speak of judging?

One common meaning of to judge is to determine how something measures
up to a certain set of standards or values. In this sense, one can judge
the size, legality, beauty, etc. of some phenomenon.

What can we judge of an artist by assessing hir politics? Indeed, what
aspect of someone's politics does it make sense to judge? How far to the
left, right, or other vector? And even if we have made a judgement of
where someone's beliefs or politics fall on some scale, what can we
assume this says about the person hirself? Practically nothing, I would
say. Even less if we look for what it says about hir art. Wagner is a
good example, of whom Thomas Mann said his success as a human being was
in inverse proportion to his success as an artist. But then is there
any agreement about what it is to be a success as a human being?

Let's face it -- in most cases attempts to judge usually amount to value
judgments of how good something is, which takes the subject into
territory with no fixed or universal foundations. In practice, most
judgmental thinking is little more than an attempt to spread a patina of
objectivity over a statement of personal preference, as part of a
broader, if unconscious, agenda of self-exaltation.

In most cases, judgments are attempots to elevate the self by putting
down the other or by associating oneself with what is seen to be
acknowledged as the higher. A poor substitute for actually improving
oneself.

One last question, of the annoying form of define your terms, please.
I know what it means for reasoning to be valid, but what does the word
mean when applied to expression or work? Do some people serve French
fries validly and others fallaciously?

We would like to apologize for the way in which politicians are
represented in this programme. It was never our intention to imply that
politicians are weak-kneed, political time-servers who are more
concerned with their personal vendettas and private power struggles than
the problems of government, nor to suggest at any point that they
sacrifice their credibility by denying free debate on vital matters in
the mistaken impression that party unity comes before the well-being of
the people they supposedly represent, nor to imply at any stage that
they are squabbling little toadies without an ounce of concern for the
vital social problems of today. Nor indeed do we intend that viewers
should consider them as crabby ulcerous little self-seeking vermin with
furry legs and an excessive addiction to alcohol and certain explicit
sexual practices which some people might find offensive. We are sorry if
this impression has come across.

[CTRL] Swift à l'Oignon

2001-07-19 Thread Chris Case

-Caveat Lector-

Sometimes the Onion hits the bullseye:

WASHINGTON, DC--Vowing to restore the pristine splendor of America's
natural treasures, President Bush Monday unveiled Project: National
Parks Clean-Up, an ambitious program to remove all toxic petrochemical
deposits from national parks by 2004.

Places like Yellowstone and Yosemite were once pure, unspoiled
wilderness, Bush said at a White House press conference. But over the
course of the past 10 million years, we have allowed them to become
polluted with toxic fossil-fuel deposits, turning a blind eye to the
steady build-up of vast quantities of dangerous pollutants. It's time to
end this terrible neglect.

Continued Bush: A comprehensive survey of our parks, conducted by a
team of top geologists specially commissioned by me, has discovered
giant pockets of petroleum, coal, and other 'fossil poisons' beneath an
alarming 38 percent of our national parks' surface area. Though a
majority of these poisons are buried under several million tons of rock
strata, should they ever seep to the surface and spread into the
surrounding areas, they would spell disaster for the parks' precious
ecosystems.

To underscore the severity of the crisis, Bush produced a chart
illustrating survey results for Yellowstone National Park, where a
staggeringly huge toxic-petroleum deposit was discovered.

This amount represents the equivalent of 40,000 supertankers worth of
oil, said Bush, gesturing toward a line on the chart. To put the
dangers into perspective, consider this: If these 'petro-poisons' should
ever spill out into the park itself, the resulting environmental
disaster would be 40,000 times worse than the damage caused by the wreck
of the Exxon Valdez.

We cannot allow such a thing to happen, Bush said. We must remove
this oil now, before it's too late.

Under the Bush plan, 7.2 billion tons of toxic petroleum would be
removed by the target date of January 2004. Unlike other federal
environmental clean-up initiatives, administration officials say the
plan would pay for itself, offsetting costs through the sale of
petroleum byproducts produced as a result of the clean-up process.

The clean-up, EPA chief Christine Todd Whitman said, may even prove
profitable, a
prospect that has attracted the participation of private industry.
Already, many U.S.
companies have expressed interest in lending assistance, and it is
hoped that these companies
will carry out much, or perhaps all, of the clean-up effort.

Though Project: National Parks Clean-Up represents Bush's first major
environmental
initiative since taking office, supporters are quick to point that he
has been a longtime
 champion of petroleum removal.

As governor of Texas, Bush fought tirelessly to protect the state's
subterranean
environment through a series of massive petrochemical-deposit clean-up
projects, Secretary
of the Interior Gale A. Norton said. Under his governorship, more tons
of petroleum-based
subterranean environmental contaminants were removed in Texas than in
all the national
Superfund clean-up sites combined. The Democrats talk a good game about
the importance of
cleaning up the environment, but when it comes to actually eliminating
the threat of enormous
oil deposits lurking under the surface of our nation, no one can hold a
candle to George W.
 Bush.

Thus far, reaction has been mixed. Some have said it is unrealistic for
the president to try to remove so much petroleum so quickly. Others,
such as Sen. Bob Smith (R-NH), have charged that the president is caving
in to pressure from environmentalists, arguing that the government's
energies would be better directed toward improving the military.

But despite such criticism, Bush stressed that the urgency of removing
the oil deposits should take precedence over everything else.

Nothing is more important than the legacy we leave future
generations, Bush said. The costs of this project pale in comparison
to the importance of safeguarding our planet's ecosystem. Our primary
mission must be to protect and foster our nation's most precious natural
resource: oil. I mean, the environment.

[CTRL] Occult Origins of Power

2001-07-17 Thread Chris Case

-Caveat Lector-

Robert Laugherty has written an intriguing short novel, somewhat in the
manner of C.S. Lewis's Screwtape Letters and Gurdjieff's Beelzebub's
Tales to His Grandson, namely as a series of talks from an aging
archon of the financial elite and his advisors to the young man being
groomed to take over his position at the peak of the pyramid of power.

Heres a partial distillation, and the Full Monty can be found at:
http://www.freedomdomain.com/neworder/occult01.html

-Chris

***

Until now, my advisors and I have deflected your questions as to how
and if my diverse operations and holdings, which seem autonomous and
even contradictory, are integrated into an organic whole to serve the
dynasty's interests. The fact that you asked these questions, rejecting
my carefully nurtured public image as an idle, coupon clipping
philanthropist, was a major factor in the high esteem in which I hold
you. Most of your competitors found puppet leadership in any one of my
organi- zations so awesome and gratifying that they immediately
eliminated themselves from the contest for the top position which you
have won. Such men of limited vision are neces- sary for my success.
They bend unconsciously to the subtle pressures to which I expose them.
They can be led in any direction I choose by simple-minded
rationalizations aimed at their vanity without being privy to my motives
which would be short lived secrets in their undisciplined and envious
minds .

Although you now must begin to pursue it consciously you have already
displayed the alienation from your emotional nature that is so essential
to achieving real worldly power.

As your tutors will explain, occult or secret knowledge is the basis
of all power in human society, so I use the word occult advisedly, in
its pristine usage.

Human hierarchies, in contrast to the animal variety, are best
sustained when the members are deluded regarding the oppressive nature,
or better, even the very existence of the hierarchy

Nearly everyone believes major decisions to be the vector sum of
autonomous pressures exerted by business, labor, government, consum-
ers, social classes, and other special interests. In fact, the vectors
of societal power are carefully balanced by us so that any net movement
is in a direction chosen by us. The only fly in the ointment is the
occasional, but extremely messy, interferences by competing financial
dynasties.

Throughout history, secure ruling elites arise through se-cret, or
occult knowledge which they carefully guard and withhold from outsiders
The power of such elites or cults diminishes as their occult knowledge
is transformed into scientific knowledge and vanishes as soon as it
becomes common sense.

The men who first studied and grasped the regularities of sun, moon,
and stars that presage the seasons had a valuable commodity to sell and
they milked it to the fullest at the expense of their credulous
fellowmen. The occult priesthoods of early astronomers and mathemati-
cians such as the designers of Stonehenge, convinced their subjects that
they alone had contact with the gods, and thus, they alone could assure
the return of planting seasons and weather favorable to bountiful
harvests. The staging (predicting) of solar and lunar eclipses was
particularly effective in awing the community The general success
resulting from following the priesthood's tilling, planting, nurturing,
and harvesting time tables insured the priest- hood's powerPopular
knowledge of seasonal regularities was discouraged by every manner of
mysticism and outlandish ritual imaginable. Failures in prediction were
blamed on sins of the people and used to justify intensified
oppression. For centuries people who had literally no idea of the
number of days between seasons and couldn't count anyway, cheerfully
gave up a portion of their harvests, as well as their most beautiful
daughters, to their faithful servants in the priest- hoods .

The power of our finance capitalist money cult rests on a similar
secret knowledge, primarily in the field of economics. Our power is
weakened by real advances in economic science. (Fortunately, the public
at large and most revolutionaries remain totally ignorant of economics.
However, we established money lords have been able to prolong and even
reverse our decline by systematically corrupting economic science with
fallacious and spurious doctrines. Through our power in the
universities, publishing, and mass media we have been able to reward the
sincere, professorial cranks whose spurious doctrines happen to
rationalize in terms of common good the government supported
institutions, laws, and economic measures upon which our money powers
depend.

However, we are so powerful today that it is no longer possible to
conceal our imposing institutions with the appearances of free
competition. Keynesianism rationalizes this omnipotent state which we
require, while retaining the privileges of

Another new and innovative weapon from Arasaka. This weapon is a
one-shot heavy microwave gun. Developed to take out the electronics
of
a target even though shielding, it has a range of 150 meters. Unlike
normal microwave weapons, which project a wide spread pattern of
microwaves, this weapon fires a tight condensed beam (about 8 inches
in

shielding. This weapon uses and expels a lot of energy, so is powered

by a very powerful battery (about the size of a car battery but much
stronger). It must be recharged for 12 hours after every use. This
weapon is perfect for SWAT teams, although its hefty price tag will
keep

[CTRL] Up Stethoscope!

2001-03-18 Thread Chris Case

The patient will see you now
The BIG MEDICINE MAILING LIST is in the slips, and you are hereby invited
to be on board
when her bow hits the water, churning up metaphors, insights, and analyses
for those battling malignant corporate power, at least those wise enough
to explore Big Corporate Bodies as evolving living systems, eco-social
pathogens and/or our morbid rivals for control of the world.
Here we will strategically examine these Big Bodies as true living systems,
eco-social pathogens, and our virulent rivals for control of the world.
Let us just suppose Big Bodies: are real superorganisms that dominate,
shape and synchronize their members' lives and minds; generate a monstrous
share of the poison, pain and havoc in the world; have overtaken humans
as Earth's new dominant species and hijacked our evolutionary course; may
yet be thwarted if we wake up, and miniaturize/localize/democratize their
premises in time.
We ask you not to debate these assumptions, just briefly pretend they
are true. If indeed we presume they are, what kind of contest would we
face, what would we have to learn and do?
OUR BASIC HYPOTHESES:
- Big Corporate Bodies are alive, in charge and out of control;
- They must be miniaturized, localized and democratized across the board
to restore human sovereignty and humane evolution;
- Thanks to new people-power tech, the thousands now aware of Big Body
rule (and our historic right to subvert it), and a hundred groups already
building the post-corporate future, we are well begun.
- Now we simply have to "persuade" our Big Brethren to liberate their
people, give up power and melt down.
This is going to take carrots, sticks, guile, and one hell of a wake
up call. That's why we're here, and why we hope you will be also.
So if you have any seductive, intimidating or communicative arts, please
join us and put them to a collective effort.
We hope you will use this list to broadcast any ideas, recon or tactics
that might profit the resistance as a whole. (While we certainly sympathize
with rants and raids against particularly malignant corporations, we conspire
here to shrivel and supplant their kind as a whole, NOT promote single-issue
reprisals.) We seek a final solution to the worldwide corporate plague,
and that means victims on every front must recognize their common nemesis,
and learn to think Big.
Big Med thus asks you to provision this list with the following
aid:
Diagnostic - facts that illuminate the singular corporatist cause behind
most eco-social ills.
Remedial - broad-spectrum tactics to boost popular resistance locally
and wither Big Bodies globally.
Prognostic - self-fulfilling prescriptions for a spirited, sensual
post-corporate world.
We seek wise and witty contributions in any of these fields, particularly
those that strengthen everyone's hand to belittle BIG's rampant power.
In sum, we ask your aid in chronicling and quickening the coming Big
Devolution. Grand surprises await once you start to think BIG.
You have been invited because we already know of your interest in related
issues. If you have friends of whom you can say the same, please send them
the link below and invite them to
join.

[CTRL] From Tribe to Gang

2001-03-04 Thread Chris Case

-Caveat Lector-

My old friend, W. David Kubiak, has started a website and discussion
group (of which I am a co-moderator) called Big Medicine, whose
stated purpose is "dissecting corporate pathology". The basic
assumption is that corporations, or Big Bodies, can be understood as
a (comparatively new) form of social organism which threaten to
dominate humanity and the planet, and whose interests are by no
means identical to, nor perhaps even consistent with, those of human
organisms...

Here is an excerpt from his script for one episode of an NPR radio
program, which deals with the rise of the military class and the
concomitant imposition of hierarchy:

**
There are several instructive ways to look at Big Body evolution -
one that compares their formation to so-called super-organisms in
other species, one that envisions how they actually began to form
in early human societies, and one that traces their increasing
diversification and dominance in modern human culture.

First we have to remember how really, really old we are as a species
- by latest accounts at least 2 million years - and for 99% of that
time we lived in hunting, gathering tribes. Now imagine the daily
flow of tribal life and how authority or the command of attention
was distributed in your group. Tribes lived a common life but faced
a diversity of challenges and, depending on the moment, very
different kinds of people were looked to for leadership and
direction. When meat was scarce, the tribe looked to its most able
hunters; when crops were needed, it looked to its savviest plant
people; when feasts were to be prepared, the best cooks assumed
authority; when construction was required, the deftest builders led
the group; when illness struck, those with healing talents
commanded attention; and when festivity was called for - as it very
frequently was in this world - the most inspired musicians and
dancers ruled.

In other words, the spotlight of attention and the authority it
conferred shone on many different members of the group, depending
on the moment, the talents available and the organic needs of the
day. Such societies not only did not invite centralized power, they
actively resisted it with an antique social trait that
anthropologists call counter-dominance. That is, when one member got
too high on his horse or uppity, a few of the lads would briskly
step in and deflate a few of his airs.

It was a natural problem. Many people who finally get attention
don't like to let the spotlight go. You perhaps know the feeling.

When everyone's attention is upon you, they are intimately connected
to you and expand your being, feeling of power and the reach of
your will. When multitudes attend you, you fill all their minds and
you are magnified. When they are diverted to another attraction,
you once become again single, solitary and small. When the
spotlight shifts, when your moment in the limelight ends, you fall
back into a kind of social darkness - and impotence.

Most people hate the feeling, but hey, that's life. Or at least it
was life during 99% of our history.

No matter how much our tribal ancestors wished to prolong their
personal turn on the stage, it was obvious you could not extend a
hunt, a harvest, a plague, or even a party forever. Thus to every
person, like every biblical thing, there was a season that came and
went in time. Problem is, there was an exception to this wisdom, a
militant exception.

Beside their regular need for food, shelter and boogie, tribes
occasionally required defense. Nasty or expansive neighbors could
suddenly burst on the scene demanding instant collective response.
As in other times of specialized need, the group looked toward its
best fighters - the strongest, the sly and the mean - and followed
their lead until the danger was passed. Now these bully boys may
also have felt a bit wistful when their brief taste of glory passed,
but unlike other trades, the brutal types had recourse to a
permanent solution. If your pre-eminent power and perks only last
as long as your fellows feel threatened, why not prolong that
threat forever?

The deep irrefutable logic of this insight has gouged the bloody
course of human history. In tribal days, warrior-necessitating
jeopardy could be extended indefinitely simply by jabbing the
neighbors occasionally - snatching a goat or wench or scalp
whenever tranquillity got out of hand. Since the resulting
retaliation usually fell on innocent heads, a spirit of fear and
vengeance could build up in the tribe until they saw in the
neighbors an implacable and relentless foe. Relentless threats are
clearly the best, because by definition they never go away, and
thus the anxious need for perpetual military authority is born.

This brilliant ploy changed everything - it concretized hierarchy
and centralized rule, finally making real Big Bodies possible. It
forced neighbors into slavery or

[CTRL] Air-conditioning on the Moon

2000-07-22 Thread Chris Case

I posted on another list a summary of the argument that NASA's
air-conditioned suits would not work in a vacuum, and provoked this
thread:

Chris writes:
Poor me. With only a high school level education in physics, I find
myself puzzled by this. Can some more informed soul deal with this for
me?

Well, my education in physics only goes a few years beyond yours, but I
did
work on NASA birds for several years...

The author states: "Heat is defined as the vibration or movement of
molecules within matter. The faster the molecular motion the higher the
temperature. The slower the molecular motion the colder the
temperature."

Temperature, not heat, is defined by such a rate, and this difference is
the
fault behind the whole theory. Heat is merely thermal energy. It is
true
that thermal energy in and of itself cannot be transmitted across a
vacuum
because of the lack of molecules, but there exists a mechanism by which
the
thermal energy becomes transmittable. Energy can travel across a
vacuum.

Whenever charges move about, they produce some electromagnetic fields.
And so it is with molecules. Molecules carry charges. When each
molecule
buzzes about, it produces a single, *extremely* weak signal. When 12
gazillion do it, they produce 12 gazillion separate small signals. But
since
the 12 gazillion molecules are roughly the same temperature, and
temperature controls how fast they whip about, and how fast they whip
about determines the frequency of the emitted wave, the 12 gazillion
independent signals are all about the same frequency, and the combined
signal does in fact carry a good deal of energy. If you build a device
that
monitors the frequency being emitted, you've built one of those
thermometer
guns that you just point at the target. This is what the last bird I
worked on
did, with target = earth.

It is this mechanism, incidentally, that allows the sun to heat up the
earth.
If a vacuum were a perfect insulator, I don't see how the sun could
affect the
temperature of things here on earth, through 98 million miles of perfect

insulator, when I can easily hold a 1/8th inch thick styrofoam cup
containing
liquid nitrogen in my hands. And since the earth is always in full
sunlight,
save the moon's occasional shadow, if we are to believe the author's
claims,
which is that heat cannot escape through a vacuum, we must ask why the
earth doesn't boil over like an astronaut's suit, since it too is
surrounded by
a vacuum. We've also got to believe that heat can enter an object
through a
vacuum, but cannot leave an object through one, unless the object is the
sun
or at least sun-like.

FYI, the higher the frequency, the more energy that is contained in the
signal. In steady-state, the temperature of the object will adjust
itself so
the frequency is such that the energy emitted equals the energy being
absorbed. It's somewhat neat to think that an 8-ball in orbit about
the sun
will absorb energy from a very wide spectrum...infrared, visible light,
ultrviolet, radio, mmw, etc, but the ball will pretty much be uniform in

temperature, so all its molecules will jiggle at the same frequency, and
the
signal it emits will be in a very narrow spectrum. The energy absorbed
from the sun will equal the energy emitted, so the 8-ball has taken a
full
spectrum of colors, absorbed it, and produced a new single color. Not
bad
for an 8-ball.

And if you really care Since the waves that are emitted precisely
tell
the tale of the molecular movement that produced them, if you can read
those waves, you're getting a much better measure of the actual thermal
energy of the target than if you were to use a thermometer, since a
thermometer requires a host of things to work right, is made inaccurate
by
many different things, and gives the temperature of the thermometer, not

the temperature of the target.

--Mark
 *

I replied:

I don't quite see how clarifying the definitions of heat and energy
explains this puzzle. The writer may use some words wrongly, but he also

is obviously saying that solar energy is transmitted through space,
without heating the vacuum. What he wonders about is how an air
conditioning system based on heat exchange and evaporation can work
where there is no medium for exchange, and when evaporation of ice does
not occur in the shadow side.

Elsewhere he claims that, although NASA explains that the spaceship
itself was cooled by rotating it, this would be equivalent to turning a
hot dog on a spit.

The basic question is: how does heat escape, other than through slow
entropy and perhaps radiation, from the shadow side of an object in
space?
 ---

and received this response:

I don't quite see how clarifying the definitions of heat and energy
 explains this puzzle.

I don't quite see how you see a puzzle: every step in his reasoning is
based
on dead wrong science and/or bluster. His insistent use of meaningless

Much though one appreciates the humour value of the A. Saba persona,
one cannot help but wonder if it is not in fact the creation of one
whose intention is to discredit the whole conspiracy meme by creating
another parody of the conspiracy nut that comes across like a deranged
former hippy who's read The Illuminatus Trilogy once too often or too
literally.

Be that as it may, one thing is sure: a person who has never been
bothered to find the correct spellings of concepts which recur regularly
in hir routines cannot possibly be someone who carefully researched the
ideas s/he puts forth. Accuracy begins at home, and a sloppy prose
style and indifference to grammatical, syntactical, and orthographical
accuracy is obviously symptomatic of the mental processes underlying the
whole oeuvre. As such, I would say it does a distinct disservice to the
cause of raising consciousness of the conspiratorial elements of history
and current events.

This one line redeems with its light profundity an otherwise totally
stoned and slightly paranoid ramble.
Edit your stuff ruthlessly and there'll be a poet's voice there.

Excuse my proffering unsolicited advice., but "credit where credit is
due"

Subject: [TechGnosis] Bilderburg Minutes Leaked
From: Chris Case [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Afternoon, ladies. Most of you know why you're here. You know what
secret longings draw you, week after week, to this bright and tastefully
appointed place, far from the prying eyes of a society that will not
allow us to sew free. Many of you are hardcore veterans of the quilting
society, old-school regulars of our little group that meets twice a
month here in this church basement. You are loyal and trusted members of
the sisterhood. Your furrowed brows are intent upon sewing, and the lust
for bare-knuckled hand-stitching action pumps through your veins. You
know full well what long-repressed urges find their release in the
quilting way. You know what you want.

But some of you may still be wondering what drove you to this place,
this mutually supportive environment where our raw, primal passion for
patterning, cutting, piecing, and stitching has found a home, an oasis
where our pent-up natural instinct to nurture explodes in a frenzy of
furious, estrogen-fueled bonding. I see an awful lot of new faces in the
crowd tonight, and that means one thing: Some of you little old biddies
haven't been observing the first two rules of the quilting society. So,
for the benefit of you rookies in the room:

The first rule of the quilting society is: You don't talk about the
quilting society.

You don't talk about the fact that a well-made rotary blade sharpener
can be found at fine quilting stores or through one of the better
catalog houses. You don't say anything about batting or basting. You
don't mention that the Rice County Piecemakers' new quilt show, "A New
Century Of Quilting," will be held at the Congregational Church UCC,
Parish House, 222 Northwest 3rd Avenue, Edina, MN, Saturday, 10-5,
Sunday, 12 to 4. Or that there will be a quilt raffle, demos, and a
charity auction. You do not tell anyone that admission is $2.50.

My name is Mrs. Bert K. Verdon. Helen to my friends. But you don't say
my name. When you encounter me or a fellow member of the quilting
society on the street, at a rummage sale, or at a charity bake-off, you
will say nothing. You will exchange one wordless glance, recognizing
each other by the bruised, pricked fingertips, the eyes fatigued from
needle-threading, and the palms calloused from pressing fabric into the
machine in a gentle but steady feed. You will know each other by the
stitches you bear and the passion you both feel surging through your
quasi-fascist, sewing-based revolutionary consciousness.

You will learn about even placement of scraps. You will learn to
strip-cut instead of tracing templates the traditional way. You will
learn to set delicate fabrics on a foundation to help them keep their
shape, wear better, and hold up longer. You will learn all this and
more, but you will not talk about the quilting society.

The second rule of the quilting society is: YOU DON'T TALK ABOUT THE
QUILTING SOCIETY. Got it, ladies? You don't say that the best iron to
have for quilting is a heavy, stainless steel one with no steam vents.
You don't talk about using spray starch to give limp fabrics the body
needed for perfect seams every time. You don't talk about marking your
quilt's appliques with one-inch-wide medical tape, which leaves no
residue and can be repositioned several times.

You will spot each other in airports and hallways, at cookouts and
church bazaars. You will spread like wildfire across the nation in an
ever-expanding network, a vast, subversive structure of untraceable
underground cells, each one a den of feminine cooperation and unbridled,
no-holds-barred emotional support. You will stealthily advance our
quilting agenda from the shadows, protected by a shroud of silence and
secrecy.

You don't cut more than four layers of fabric at the same time. You keep
an eye out for cuts containing fabric fibers, as this is a sign of a
worn-out blade. You keep your blade covered when not in use and out of
the reach of little hands at all times, because safety is paramount. And
you don't talk about the quilting society.

The third rule of the quilting society is: If this is your first visit
to the quilting society, YOU WILL QUILT TONIGHT. You will affix batting,
cut backing, and utilize straight or scalloped binding. You will use
paper templates with the fabric basted onto the shapes to ensure
accurate piecing. You will, should time and/or money be limited, be
advised to use a "cheater's cloth"--a fabric printed with an all-over
block design, made to look like a pieced or appliqued quilt top.

You are here because, deep down, you want to quilt. You think you have
what it takes to be one of us, but quilting takes discipline. And it
demands perseverance. You have to possess, from the gut, the willingness
to commit to a long-term project, one that may well last months in the
case of such larger projects as multiple-charm or friendship quilt

They're all irrational.

Give a moment's thought to the a priori assumptions of "scientific"
empiricism before you shoot yourself in the foot, is my suggestion :-)

A search for "Problem of Induction" would be the entry-level approach...
