Re: [documentation-dev] Re: Mid-level base tutorial

2007-10-11 Thread Drew Jensen

Hi Mariano

Sorry for being slow on getting back. I gave a complete reading and it
looks pretty good, I would like to read it one more time. I just got
busy with another endeavor that pulled a lot of my time away. But I
didn't see anything in the first pass that jumped out and said NOPE
that is not correct if that helps.

Also, a little bit ahead of when it is needed, a new page was added to
the Base wiki this morning with Ocke Janssen's assistance that lists the
functions available for use in the new Sun Report Builder. The URL for
this page is:

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Base/Reports/Functions
by the time the reports are needed for this tutorial that page should be
finished with a solid set of examples of how to use each of those
functions and, with a little luck and help from a few others, a set of
simple example reports showing how to utilize them together.

I'm still excited about what you are doing, more so since reviewing the
draft of the chapters even.

I know I still owe you the update on the data type range and precision
specs for numerics...I'll get it done.

Drew

Hi Jean and Frank!

As I said last time, there is a first draft of points one and two of the
proposed outline for the mid-level Base tutorial. However, I have not
published yet. First because Andrew Jensen is still reviewing it and I
want to make sure that the copy is correct from a technical point of view.
I am expecting Andrew to provide feedback at any moment now. Also, I need
to include some information about variable data types that he promised me.
The other reason is that point one and two do not deliver without point
three. I have been hesitant about posting something that still needs
revision and is incomplete.

However, the draft could benefit from the feedback from an editor or the
corrections by a copy expert. I was hoping that maybe Jean, as technical
editor, or Frank would be interested in reviewing this or sending me with
someone who would.

Andrew mentioned the possibility that this document be stored at OO.o
Authors while the third part is being developed and where it could be
accessed by those helping with the editing. Also, I understand that the
formal and stylistic rules and the templates for e-publishing are there.

I would appreciate if Jean of Frank can orient me in the right direction
at this stage of the project.

Thanks!

Mariano.

Hi Mariano,

(First sorry if this email arrives twice...odd things with the computer
today..)

I have it downloaded and have begun reading.

I used the .sql file you uploaded to create a Base file database -
worked as a charm under 3.2 - 3.3 beta.

Tried a few of the queries - hit a small problem.

The document it using nice double quotes that need to be changed - and -
there can be line break problems in copy/paste.

So for instance looking at the example on page #136. If I copy / paste
this into a query definition I get this:

SELECT CONCAT( CONCAT( “Patient”.“Surname”, ', ' ), “Patient”.“First

Name” ) AS “Patient Name”,

“Phone Number”.“Number”,

“Phone Number”.“Description”

FROM “Patient”, “Phone Number”

WHERE “Patient”.“ID Number” = “Phone Number”.“Patient ID”

ORDER BY “Patient Name” ASC;

*chuckling*...which the email list server might change again..

OK the query fails for two reasons.

1 - the characters and ” must be
2 - A object name which, in this case First Name, can not have break
across lines.

So to get the query to run I need this

SELECT CONCAT( CONCAT( Patient.Surname, ', ' ), Patient.First Name ) AS
Patient Name,

Phone Number.Number,

Phone Number.Description

FROM Patient, Phone Number

WHERE Patient.ID Number = Phone Number.Patient ID

ORDER BY Patient Name ASC;

or this,

SELECT CONCAT( CONCAT( Patient.Surname, ', ' ),

Patient.First Name ) AS Patient Name,

Phone Number.Number,

Phone Number.Description

FROM Patient, Phone Number

WHERE Patient.ID Number = Phone Number.Patient ID

ORDER BY Patient Name ASC;

perhaps.

Other wise - It's reading very nicely..

Question - will you be including any example data? or an ODB file even?

Thanks

Hello Mariano, et al,

Grabbed the updated version and here is where I'm at:

Section 1 - rather a fast skimming (I will go back to this section now
in earnest)

Section 2 - went through with a bit more detail
Section 3 - hunkered down and when through these chapters in earnest.

Couple of comments first:

Chapter Seven has this in the first paragraph:
Now is time to turn on the computer. Go ahead!
Oh, praise the Lord!

This approach of reinforcing to the reader the importance of 'thinking'
before you start typing when developing their database really is quite
important. (I best stop here, on this subject, lest a rant follow on the
difference between a spreadsheet and a database)

Alright then, so much for inflating the ego...and now:

Actually there is only one 'and now', Chapter Nine and the section:
Querying more than one table at a time

This is the only section that I thought needed just a bit more depth.
Reading along I was impressed with the job you did of keeping the level
of detail focused to the reader's skill level. I've tried my hand at a
few tutorials and finding the right balance, then maintaining it, is
something that has proven, for me at least, difficult. Honestly I think
I missed it much more often then hit it. For the most part I think you
are pretty close to spot on.

With the exception of this section on Joins. The text shows only the use
of an inner join making no mention of outer joins. I think this is a
mistake. This is a fairly fundamental concept IMO and even if you don't
go into great detail I think it merits a paragraph or two and a link to
further reading.

Anyway - I'll stop here for the moment and plan on getting back to it
again tomorrow and drop another email when I do.

Till then,

Re: [documentation-dev] Re: Feedback for Base Tutorial

2010-08-29 Thread Drew Jensen

 Howdy,

Inner and outer joins.

Actually there is a good example for an outer join with doctors and
patients.

Patients have a relationship with Doctors, yes.

Suppose I want to list all the doctors and all the patients assigned to
each.

If you do an inner join between two table it returns the set of records
that match on the linked field(s).

But what if you have a doctor in the database that has no patients.

Using an inner join you would not see the doctor record, since it can
not match to a DoctorID in the patient table.

In this case you need to use an OUTER join which means, return me all
the records that match between the tables, and then depending on if it
is a LEFT or RIGHT outer join also return all records in the lefthand or
righthand table that does not have a a match in the other.

OK

- two doctors
Williams and Parker

- one patient
Crathers

To get both docotors and the patient into a result set you need to use a
query such as

SELECT
Medical Doctor.Surname AS Doctor,
Patient.Surname AS Patient
FROM { OJ Medical Doctor LEFT OUTER JOIN Patient ON Medical Doctor.ID Number =
Patient.Medical Doctor ID }

Drew

I would guess that OJ means Outer Join and that it is not by chance that
you are using the key words LEFT OUTER JOIN and that Medical
Doctor.ID Number is at the left of the clause.

Ah - well.

Base uses ODBC compliant naming for Outer Joins. This specification requires
'{oj' to initiate the outer join part of the statment and '}' to end it.

So, it is not just the oj but the curly bracket { and oj taken as a
whole that is required.

This is for all intent an purpose the same for JDBC connections.

When the Base query designer is used to create an outer join query this
ODBC/JDBC naming convention is used - when doing so by hand, and the
backend supports it, one can drop this {oj. But that is not not
something that makes much sense any more, as all, that I know of anyway,
database servers now recognize the {oj marker.

the expected answer shown in the text.

I've read other database books that worked that way and it really made
the material much more practical.

You've already thought about this, I'm guessing; no?

My sample data set is almost finished; if it's of any use, you're
welcome to it.

Joe

Hi Joe, Mariano

+1 for some example data

Mariano I understand your reasoning for not wanting a full ODB file, and
I agree with that.

However, you could simply include the data load as part of the script
that builds the Schema, or and I would suggest this route. A separate
text file file with the insert statements for the test data and have the
reader load this via the SQL window again, at the beginning of the
section on queries.

Best wishes,

Drew

Having a data set available for Chapter 10 sounds like a very good idea. I
particularly like the option of providing a separate text file with the
insert statements to load through the SQL window, as this gives
opportunity to showcase another feature available to Base.

I do not have a big data set myself and would be happy to accept Joe's
offer. Drew, can this be extracted form the zipped file without much
hassle?

Cheers,

Mariano Casanova.

Hi,

Yes, simply use the SCRIPT command within the SQL Window
SCRIPT 'filename'

Then use any text editor to open that file, filename and delete
everything before the first INSERT statement.

The file is good to go at that point.

I am about to publish the latest edition of the Base Tutorial. This
version corrects all the errata identified so far (thanks Joe for your
contributions) and adds a section on outer joins, among other fixes.

Drew, please let me know if you are OK with chapter 10. If it's fine
with

you I would also like to send you the section on Outer Joins so that you
can review the SQL code.

Joe, can we count on your offer for a Data Set? Also, could you confirm
the spelling of your full name so that I can include it in the
acknowledgments?

I am hoping to publish this final version by Friday at the very
latest. I

thank you for your help.

Mariano Casanova.

Hi Mariano,

Sorry for the delay--the sample set turned into more of a project than
I expected. Somehow, it always does ;-)

Anyway, here's my first complete set:
http://www.martnet.com/~jes/temp/MLTut2a.odb

I intended for the data to be sensible but I've only just now got it
all into the database and have not tested anything, not even the entry
forms, but maybe this will be enough to get started.

The sample data includes some silly familiar names (therapists Anna
Recksiek and Frazer Crane); the meds are all
silly/fictitious/OTC=non-prescription (Focusyn, Cordrazine),
except I included the real medications mentioned on p109 in the text.

I thought it best to avoid looking too much like real medical records,
but you may feel the silliness clashes with the more serious tone of
the book. We can switch to purely random names (as the patient names
are already) quite easily, if you prefer.

No attribution is necessary--really--but if you want to include it, my
real, actual name is: Joe Smith.

Joe

Hi Mariano, Joe

Joe, I've grabbed the file and will use the data in it as I read the
latest text, which I'll do tomorrow..

Cool!

The only thing missing is a reference to loading the collection of
data to
play with in chapter 10, which Drew and Joe had proposed. I would
like to

know if the set offered by Joe is available or if Drew would want to
create one. A humorous tone is not only fine with me but also
encouraged,

Joe; but a random set would be as useful. To do this I would like to
upload the set so that I can provide the exact URL in the text of the
tutorial.

...

My sample set is still available here:
http://www.martnet.com/~jes/temp/MLTut2a.odb

But that's just a temporary location. The release file should be
available from some public repository--alongside the text would make
it simple for people to find, I expect.

If you want the data in some other form, just let me know. Drew
mentioned a plain ascii SCRIPT dump. Such a file is trivial to
prepare from the .odb, but I'd be happy to convert to whatever format
is best.

If a different set would be better, that's cool by me--whatever
supports the text best.

I don't claim any rights to the data--I'm not sure it's even possible
to claim any legal rights for randomly-generated data like this.

Joe

Hi Mariano, Joe,

Grabbed the odb file, will check against the schema again in the latest
files Mariano uploaded and setup the text files for the data load.

I suppose the wiki is as good a place as any for that when I'm done.
Should give the permanent link needed.

So, something, sometime tomorrow and I'll send email when done - OK.
